As we turn the pages of this yearbook, memories of the joys, excitement, challenges, and successes of the past four years will be enlivened. In much the same way, comznemorating this 135th anniversary of our school should make us look back over the decades and try to understand the hopes and dreams of those who came before us to better judge how well we have measured up to their expectations. Pontiac Central High School was founded to answer a compelling need felt in the cominunity for higher formal education for the young people in the area. From very modest beginnings in 1849, the high school, originally known as Old Union and later as Grove High School, was considered, by l87l, to be the finest in the State of Michigan. Generations of graduates have made outstanding contributions to the arts and sciences, to politics and industry. To chronicle the history of a high school best, we should parallel the way in which the QUIVER details the life cycle of a single graduating class in four-year segments. Each new incoming class brings with it, distinctive personalities, talents, needs, and challenges. Over these past four years we have endeavored to offer strong leadership and understanding guidance to assure that those graduating will be as well prepared as possible for their future roles in the community. We are constantly monitoring our teaching procedures and our curriculunfl choices, sensitive to the demands that will be made on our young people. We know how important it is that our students realize that success breeds success and have therefore publicly honored their achievements in Honors and Awards ceremonies while we have challenged their sense of civic responsibility in the Key Club, the Student Leadership Council, and in a revitalized National Honor Society. Those students who persevered to improve their grades and their school citizenship were also rewarded because underlying all our programs at Pontiac Central is this philosophy: The singleminded, enthusiastic pursuit of excellence in the classroom, on the athletic field, in every facet of life is the only sure way to realize fully the potential each of us possesses. As the eleventh principal of Pontiac Central High School, I take great pride in the traditions and achievements of the past. But looking back is not what made this high school great. We must continue to nurture the best of our traditions and make them vital and productive in the lives of our students and community today. The greatest homage we can pay to the past is to improve the future. Hail to the Chiefs of yesterday, today, and tomorrow! Yes, from the first day to the last. You leave now with fond memories. Memories to remember. . . The excitement of the first month, when friendships were re-newed and new friends gathered. The posters, slogans, and signs signifying HOIVIECOIVIING AND CAMPAIGN WEEK together with our first big PEP rally of the year was great. Finally, the Homecoming football game when our Chief and Princess and their Court were announced. Remember the Beat Pontiac Northern Week , highlighted by our hosting the King 8: Queen from I-Iuskie Land by sharing a special pancake breakfast. To add to the excitement was the thrilling football game when we were victorious over the Huskies. lvlernories of the first school-wide Bowl-A-Thon, when each grade bowled in spirited competition for a trophy for their class. In addition you helped support the wonderful effort made by the Pontiac Boosters Club to retain all extra-curricular activities in our schools. Can you ever forget the hectic senior committee meetings when you helped in the selection of the announcements, prom, and senior trip? I will never forget those meetings. In addition to the daily academia, will you remember the importance of: Career Day at the Silverdome, the many representatives from the Colleges and Universities, the array of recruiting personnel from the various military services, the tons of grant information, and the many applications that were needed to be filled out. . . now and today! . There seemed to be so much to do in a very short period of time. In addition, most of you had, or were looking for some sort of part-time job to help defray some of the expense of the prom, senior trip, senior pictures, announcements cap 81 gowns, and yes, your class rings. How many times did you say to yourself, if I can get through this year I can do anything. Now it is time to say goodbye to our January Grads. . .the handshakes, hugs, and tears. You began to get your second wind and I could hear the halls echo with it's all down-hill from now on . Our spare time was now devoted to cheering the Fighting Chiefs on to the State finals. Whenour baseball team started to practice we all knew spring was finally here. Easter break was just around the corner, and this also meant that Senior Exams and Senior Clearance would soon be upon us. Finally, the Baldwin Pavilion. . . Could this really be ? The day had finally arrived and there I was, marching to the time honored Pomp and Circumstanceu. All the friends, relatives and people. . . my knees were shaking and I didn't know i.f I wanted to laugh or cry. I looked out from my seat on the stage and visually took a picture of each one of you. I think I saw laughing and crying. I leave you with this humble token. . . feel kindly toward everyone. Be friendly and pleasant among yourselves. Be generous and fair. There appears to be a resurgent interest among students in improving their academic preparation. Teachers also made strides to improve academic preparations. Our Math Department instituted a new and more rigorous mathematics program at grades 9 through 12. Other activities by the faculty to improve the educational program were the development of all Pontiac Central students and an effort to return on a limited basis to some sixth hour classes. All of the above activities were evidence of a school-wide effort to improve academic excellence at Pontiac Central High School. Daring my first year as a member of the administrative team at Pontiac Central, I have experienced many events and activities which will be remembered for years to come. Homecoming Week, the PEP assemblies, and the Chiefs victory over Pontiac Northern Huskies in their annual football classic are but a few.
