Many common facilities are shared by these two wings including a media center, gymnasium, field house and 0lympic size swimming pool that holds 306,000 gallons of water. The auditorium will seat 1,000 people and can be sectioned off for three smaller audiences. Both wings can be quickly and easily remodeled to suit any purpose. The floors were carpeted prior to the installation of wall partitions. These partitions can easily be moved with no damage to the floors or ceilings to make rooms of larger or smaller sizes. 994 ! li ii I' 'l 'li. l'li l Ui' 'l' N ' J ' it -Q-, 1' l, ,,,'L.Lf.- ' f h -225, ii1f1,'s,-' ,,.1- ' ' ' ' ' - 'l - f.. v. uni .-'1.'llll'E n 1l'.l'illvl.' lf-.li ABOVE: School Superintendent Dr. Dana Whitmer. This year's team, although dominated by underclassmen made consid- erable improvements. With the addition of a strong group of runners from Lincoln, the team should do very well in the next few years. The season's highlight was a second place finish in the Bay City Sophomore Invitational. Steve Elliott took second place in the Saginaw Valley and qualified for the State Champion- ship run. The biggest disappointment was, as always a loss to Pontiac Northern. Motivated by desire, but suffering from confusion in strategy and player inexperi- ence, the Chiefs went on to finish the season with a 2-7 record. Beginning a half hour early in the pour- ing rain, the two teams of girls proceeded to outwit each other in the mud and rain. The teams were under the coaching of Eric Brimm, Mike Garcia, Clay Terry and Leslie Bridges for the seniors and Mark Joss, Brad Newman, and Kevin Thomas for the juniors, all under the supervision of refer- ees, coach Steve Szabo and assistant coach Bill Richardson. Molly McGraw, junior quarterback, managed to spin off the senior line and run sixty yards to score the only game points leading the juniors to a 6-O victory over the seniors, the first senior loss in five years. The referees, when asked their opinions of working a girls football game, made no reference to the way in which the game was played, but the pieces that were used to play with, they both agreed the girls looked shaplier in their uniforms than the guys team. ale W, W!! Could we fill the gaps left by graduation? Would we have enough depth to win under the newly devised scoring system, where five places are awarded instead of the customary three? Would the new pool help develop more desire and enthusiasm? Could the team catch Saginaw Arthur Hill who has dominated the Val- ley championship for the past fifteen years? The answers to all of these questions was yes, except for the last one. Yes, Virginia, there is an Arthur Hill, and once again they went undefeated lafter a tough battle in our pooll going on to win the Championship. Much of this year's success belongs to the new pool. The longer pool provided better and longer workouts. The team averaged 8,000 practice yards daily, whereas, last year they were only able to average 3,500 yards. The new, clean sur- roundings of the locker room kindled a proud feeling among the swimmers. But most of all, it was the great backing the team received from our loyal student body and parents who made the difference in the tight races. 78 ' V 1 .V rn- 5.111 is ' save- A A I Central's nators owe much of their success tothe adminis- tration of this school. The best equipment and much overtime contributed to a successful season. For this reason, the 1974 Valley Meet was dedi- cated to our principal, Donald McMillan. There were exceptional per- formances this year. One in particular was Captain Jim Dauw. To go along with his 54 records last year, he set 43 new records, one of which was in the 500 yard freestyle in the Oakland County Cham- pionship. Not to be outdone, Jeff Dauw, Jim's twin, set 19 records of his own. He estab- lished a new pool record and varsity record in his specialty, the 100 yard butterfly. - 'rf ,W - q' V. -4 4 ,- sf, , .., -'hmm mg' n . Outstanding wrestlers for the Chiefs were Captain Terry Perna I5-6, Gilbert Simpson I4-7, and star sophomore Jeff Cox I8-8. Other standouts for the Chiefs have been Kevin Goodson, Bill Campbell, Dennis Yahner, Don White, Jim O'Neil, Leland Llttle, Jesse Kincade, Joe Grandberry, Kevin Thomas, Jamie Hess and Conrad Davis. Squad Loses Only Three These wrestlers will be the core of next year's team as only three men are seniors. A special thank you from Coach Szabo goes to Mat Maid Anita Uballe and cheerleaders Donna Woodmore and Joni Wallace who helped out at all home meets. The library, now called the Media Center, was moved into our new building and now occupies 12,700 square feet in the center of the street floor i3rd floorj. It had gradually, through the past six or eight years, and with the coming of technological advancement, became a true Media Center or a Library plus . ln other words, it had developed into a center including programs and mate- rials, involving books, periodicals, plus loopfilm, microfilm, cassettes, slides, art reproduc- tions, transparencies and other forms of media. They all consider having been able to come to the U.S. as a great opportunity. The maior differences noted between the U.S. and their home countries were the types of classes, and the emphasis placed on sports. Each has made a lot of friends at PCHS and their fond memories are many and varied. RIGHT: German Exchange student Barbara Schmelzle. FOR- EIGN EXCHANGE STUDENTS. Sports Editor Gordon Markham, Mark Merkovitz, Sports Editor Gus Morris, Adviser Stan Rogel 163 f + The Dld School Tradition In 1849, the first high school in the current city of Pontiac was erected. By 1858, the school enrollment had increased to the point of need for a new school. The new school, built in the Oak Grove on Huron Street, was finished in 1871 and called Grove High. In 1913, a new school was again erected, called officially Pontiac High School. Additions to the building were made in 1928 and 1953 adding the gymnasium and the cafeteria. In the old Pontiac High, the front stair wells were designated Boy's and the Girl's stair- cases. They were done so to keep the sexes apart during study hall! In the late sixties, it was decided, after parts of the roof came tumbling down, that a new school was again needed. After deciding to build the new school adiacent to the old Pontiac Central, construction began and the doors opened in September, 1973. V Emotions are mixed in feelings towards the new school, as proved by the current debate on the future off the old building. Currently, though, one can still look out one of the few windows and behold the school of the early twentieth century. THE HISTORY OF SCHOOL ACTIVITIES The first school newspaper was published in 1891 entitled THE RAMBLER. lt was followed by the WOODBEE. THE ORACLE was printed in 1896 and on orange and black paper. That is thought to be the origin of the school colors. Reorganization of the paper after its steady decline came in 1915. lt was in this year that a contest was held to choose a title. THE TOMAHAWK was the chosen name because the name reflected the tradition of the Indian, the first inhabitant of the city. The first yearbook was published in 1896 by the graduating class and was called in Latin, Le dimur du Espirit, in English The Last of the Spirit. The name Quiver came from a stu- dent who had seen a book entitled QUIVER READINGS, which dealt with symbols relating to Pontiac's history. The first class cheer was started by the Class of 1901 and went: Rah Rah Rah Rah Rahrum We're the Class of Naughty One Are we? Are we? Well I guess Pontiac High School PHS To graduate, yes, everyone ln nineteen hundred and naughty one. The first football team was organized in 1892 without much support. By 1899, PHS had a championship team. Golf started in 1924 and in 1927, the team won regionals and placed second in the state finals. Tennis began in 1917 and won the regionals in that year. Track began in 1901, in which the team placed fifth in the state. Our track team has produced Olympic winner Hayes Jones, and collegiate star Bill Tipton. ln October of 1946, the first females were added to the squad of cheerleaders. Eight girls began to cheer and since lheri the number of guys cheering has decreased. ln 1973, current seniors Mike Gordon and Dave Harrell began to cheer, rekindling the old tradition. The first Chief and Princess were crowned on October 1 1, 1957 and reigned for a week. The Chief represents spirit. The uplifted spear represents the fans' anticipation of a successful season. The Princess stands for unity and brotherhood of the school and the court for the spirit of the student body. ln 1958, the first official PCHS seal was introduced. As the first year in the new Pontiac Central High is concluded, new traditions will be started and old ones will remain. Sixty years ago, a student body was probably thinking the same thing: What will it be like in the next sixty years? .fe 1' Jeff' Z me-44' ish.
