Ye warriors staunch and true. Always fight with all your might. Whatever you may do. Whether on diamond. or gridiron. or the track, for in the poolj, Fight! Fight! For Pontiac. For the orange and the black. Verse: Fame has come to us in every field Through our efforts in the past. So keep fighting back and never yield Keep fighting to the last. Repeat Chorus: Science Emphosis Brings About Curriculum Chonge . . something to interest everyone Three basic studies make up the science curriculum: biology, chemistry, and physics. The subject matter studied in general biol- ogy depends greatly upon the teacher. This biol- ogy course gives a brief survey of the human anatomy and its functions, and a basic under- standing of the body in relation to its environ- ment. Two types of chemistrygare chem. study and college prep. chemistry. The degree of diffi- culty between the two is very close, however, different approaches are used. Chem. study stu- dents seek their answers through experiments, whereas chemistry students experiment to sub- stantiate answers. Physics is a study of the familiar physical world. Though it began as a philosophy, the modern approach to physics has something to in- terest everyone. and consequently, it would beneht anyone taking it. Some of the laws of nature which affect the handling ofa car are concerned with gravity, friction, inertia, kinetic energy, and force of im- pact. A very common type of automobile acci- dent is one which concerns a violation of these natural laws. Many young drivers violate such laws due to a lack of experience. Because of the importance of these natural laws, they have be- come the basis of many man-made laws. Co-op secretary Dorothy Hill flop, lefj. All of these areas have been greatly influenced by recent advances in science and technolo- SY- . Automotives deals with the laws of physics and also with mechanical power. Drafting is based upon the science of mathematics and the skills and abilities to construct two and three dimensional representations. The field of electronics is dependent on the laws of physics and electricity, while metal shop teaches a kind of practical chemistry. In recent years, scien- tific skills have aided in mass food production, pro- cessing of frozen foods, and methods of cooking. New advances have helped in the invention of house- hold appliances, textiles, and cleaning solvents. Although originally designed to help girls of high school age acquire homemaking skills, it has grown in scope and depth to serve persons of all ages in improving personal, family, and community liv- mg. French and Spanish classes students are not only taught the language and grammar. but also some history, geo- graphy, and customs of the countries. Tapes, records, and the language labs are used to increase the fluency of the language being studied. This year foreign exchange students visited classes and explained some customs and ideas of their native countries. The exchange program was sponsored'by biology instructor Margorie White, and surely contributed more understanding of foreign cultures to the language education experience. Would you believe the English fac- ulty has busily constructed a new curriculm with heavy emphasis on elec- tives for fun and profit. That is to say, the classes of 1971 and 1972 will profit when they become the first to choose from a wide variety of courses ranging from rock poetry to philosophy, from creative writing to the re- search paper. lt's the old more courses than you can take in three years trick. Once upon a time the Reading Lab was the radio workshop class- room. Above the door, at its second floor location, one can still see the old On the Airll sign. Today, the Reading Lab has another message. lt's about students who are hooked on books and magazines. lt must contain more than a thousand titles in paperback, and the Ludington Press provides hundreds of back-issue magazines regularly. Co-op Program Grows The co-op program in which supervised earn-as-you-learn work experience is combined with related in-school study, is growing by leaps and bounds, according to V05 cational and Technical Education Director Maurice C. Prottengeier. As of Jan. 31, a total of 363 students from Pontiac Central and Pontiac Northern High Schools were in- volved in the program. Five years ago, the enrollment was 224-. Nine part-time coordinators carry the major responsibility for the operation of Pontiac's co-op program. They seek out training stations for the students in the business community, match the students with the jobs available and consult with both the stu- dents and employers at regular intervals during the semester. To qualify for the co-op program, a student must be 16 years of age or older, have a good attendance record, and indicate an interest in the occupation as a career goal. He also should have taken, or be taking, a related course. Led by Don Russel and sparked by Laurie Mallonen, they allowed an aver- age of only 15 points per game. Despite the team's record of 1-7-1, the defense was always tough and thus Central was only twice beaten by more than 10 points. The chief failing of the team was in the of- fensive area. The Chiefs were plagued by an inability to score when necessary. One cause may have been an inexperienced offensive line. Another problem was the lack of a kicking specialist. at 561 1. K LAS. JERRY RATLIFF a fine shooter, Jerry keeps opponents from double and triple teaming Campy. MONTY HERRING another fine shooter, he Chose his shots much better this year. His rebounding was vastly improved. ANTHONY STYLES an unselfish team player, he almost never makes a mistake or fails to hit the open man. Anthony can score when he wants, but prefers to set up the big men. BILL GLOVER the same type player as Styles, Clover shoots with the best. MYRON BROCK can play for anyone but Russell, and is a good man to have around in ease someone gets into foul trouble. Two new ideas thought of this summer were culotte skirts for football season. f,9? Varsity skirts are plain orange culotte. Junior Varsity skirts are black with orange stripes going up each side.
