In terms of communication the principal is especially vital. He or- ganizes all school communications, he acts as the liaison officer be- tween the school and central ad- ministration, he helps seniors gain freshman standing in the college of their choice by making recommen- dations for them, and he supervises and links the efforts of his assistants. This year Francis Staley has four assistants. Smith Carson, in charge of discipline, is new this year. Wesley Maas, is now responsible for the evaluation of new teachers and the use of the IBM machines. Remaining in their previous posi- tions are Donald McMillan, in charge of student affairs, enroll- ment, and research, and Harold Smead in charge of attendance, child accounting, and home and school relations. Counseling Services Build Educational and Social Climate Richard Tilwick uses the PA ship competition. g s. , , S Q system to inform seniors of another college scholar- The counsel or's principle obiective is to provide the student with the services which will help him take his place in the world. These services are organized to give con- tinuous assistance to each student in himself as an individual and as a member of knowing society. The counselor helps him make the most of his strengths, and recognize and accept his limitations. The counselor also provides information about a student's aptitudes and needs. He helps the student to work out problems of a social, emotional, spiritual and mental nature. To provide an educational and social climate in which a student may function to the best of his ability, the counselor works with parents, the school staff and the community. Guidance services provide an inventory of the individual, appropriate socio-economic information by various means, counseling educational and job placement assistance, financial aid and testing requirements. Pontiac Central High School conducts a yearly follow-up study of its graduates and evaluates the results. This in turn enables counselors and teachers to constantly im- prove services to students. r Vera Moe Richard Adams Ayling i fir' ' T I X l E l. Ego William Graham if Na+? Fa fnigrh- n ' Q I . Notehand helps the college-bound student take notes more efficiently, an essential skill in the college classroom. lf one must work his way through college, a good business background enables him to obtain better employment. And it, for some reason, he is not able to continue in college, business is a field open to him because of his high school training. Thus, business courses such as data processing tmost recently introducedj, typing, shorthand, filing, and bookkeeping, as well as other courses, provide skills that can be ot use to all students, not iust those on a business curriculum. Industrial Education Offers the Greatest Variety of Courses T4 The vocationaleindustrial department, headed by Joseph Atwell, prepares students tor a variety of jobs. For the collegeebound student, interested in architecture or electronics, courses in architec- tural drawing and electronics are offered. Occupations that can be entered directly after high school with vocational training in- clude tool and die making, sheet metal layouts, pattern making, welding, printing, and mechan- ics, as well as others. The department encourages boys to enter The Chrysler Trouble Shooting Contest held each spring. Another course which challenges students is the Physics class taught by David Siple, department head. This is considered one of the most difficult and beneficial courses offered at our school. Other science courses available to PCH students are general science, Biology and Chemistry. In these courses, it is the goal of the department to challenge students and fire their curiosity. From Madison Junior High School, Mr. Milzow is now teaching geometry and algebra. ln November, certain students represented PCH in the second annual Math Competition, held this year ot Pontiac Central. The competition consisted of three categories: oral, written and slide rule. With the help of instructors Stuart Choate, Eleanor Byrnes, and James Parker, the Chief math wizards again downed Northern, this year by 65.5 points. Special mention should be made ot the contributions of Mike VanGuiIder, Greg Gallagher, Albert Yee, Steve McKelvey, May Yee and Janet Smith. He also understands enough about the main- tenance and servicing of a car to keep it in good condition. Consequently, to produce good drivers a training program should in- clude instruction in all of these areas. Top players forthe l966 season were All - Saginaw Valley selection, Bruce Turpin, and Bennie Williams. Hardimen Jones turned out to be the sophomore surprise of the year, scoring a total of 36 points for the year. Bennie Williams topped Jones with an outstanding 42 points. Losing by only an average of 2 points a game suggests that the Chiefs were a successful, hard driving team. With a 4-4 record, PCH placed 5th in the Saginaw Valley. This year four players were chosen as All-County Class A players. All hands are against Arthur Hill as Gordon Hamilton and Walter Causey move in on a rebounding ball. Strong rebounding was an aid to the Chiefs during their campaign in the Saginaw Valley. Chief Cagers Celebrate District Championship Led by the 'l-2 scoring punch of Prentice Hill and Alton Wilson, Coach Fred Zittel's cagers concluded a highly successful season by knocking off fifth ranked Waterford Kettering for a Class A District Championship. Finishing with a 14 win, 5 loss overall record, the Chief displayed moments of greatness. An upset victory over Saginaw during the regular season and district wins over the favored Clarkston and Kettering quintets must have made the often wrong pollsters squirm. Along with Hill and Wilson, Walter Causey, John Childs, and Gordon Hamilton made up Coach Zittel's starting team. The big five, with the aid of a strong bench, helped make the Valley a tight race. Through Bill's junior year he has broken all but two of the records set by former PCH star Hayes Jones, who went on to become the 1964 Olympic Games gold medal-winning hurdler. He was the first junior at PCH to earn Scholastic Coach Magazine's All-America honors. Jones and Bradell Pritchett are the other Chiefs to gain similar recognition. During the summer of 1966, Bill competed in the Junior Chamber of Commerce National Junior Track and Field eliminations. His hard work rewarded him with gold medals in both the high and low hurdles at the finals in Denver, Colorado. Prior to this publication's deadline, Bill's best time in the highs was 13.8 seconds in the finals at Denver. His best in the low hurdles was 18.9 at the Champion of Champions meet on an outdoor straight-away at Kalamazoo. The big thing is his willingness to work, con- tinues Coach Wilson. During his three years at PCH, Bill has also been a member of the cross-country team. His main purpose was to work on conditioning and thereby build his stamina. Tip has come a long way from Lincoln Junior High School where Coach Bob Kent made a hurdler out of him. Everyone at Pontiac Central wishes Bill every bit of luck in his future. .ef .4 rf 1,4-ii' High School All-American q x , D Q. x ,, A , L dazawA'0Jldl ff'Iffl 1'-- ' I 1 .1 l , as mm 'r' Q . Whitmer when he stated that the ob- jective of this department was, uto make each student feel success in the area where he needs help. This has been the goal of the English department faculty this year. To aid in this obiective additional new teachers and new equipment were acquired. New to the department this year were, James Davis, Arnold Berstein, Ruth Scribner, and Joseph Shara. To help the student develop individually suited techniques in reading, a new device was added, The Reading Laboratory under the direction of instructor Blair Johnston and his assistant Juanita Schan. The English department hopes that, after completing its courses, the student will be better prepared to find success in the adult world. PCHS students use the controlled reader, a tool of the Reading Lab. The machine can be used to stimulate students to read a phrase at a time rather than single words. These not only provided cultural enrichment but put the student in a learning situation through which he could develop new skills in fluency. Courses which were offered this year in- cluded French, Spanish, German and Latin, with a fourth year in French offered for the first time. Along with the newly intro- duced course, two new teachers were added to the language arts faculty. They were Connie Hubble and Ruth Scribner. A A .V N it f I Young, Michael Zieske, Faye At the beginning ofthe school year, a new method ot answering that perennial question, Who am I? was promoted by the school administration. A new Polaroid process camera was purchased and, with the patience and perseverance ot assistant principal Smith Carson and police counselor James Lafnear Qbelowl, every student was photographed and eventually given a genuine Pontiac Central student identification card to use and misplace. The Card soon acquired an identity of its own. To some it was a necessary thorn, prodding them to remember that they were Pontiac Central students and to act accord- ingly. On the other hand, a few believed the cards to be only the beginning ot an adult initiated plague on the teenager and his almost sacred freedom, So tar as this publication knows, however, no one has had to show his l.D. to take a drink of water, visit the lavatory, go up or down a staircase, buy a pencil at the bookstore or cough in the hallway. 1 Q gn iii ' in 133 K.-.A Kg! a ' Lester Mack 134 The Quiver Photographer .af A x A Q V -15' I i ..,,,n-,:' - i 'as W f --.,, ,....--Q i 1 A i Now and then communication in the classroom gears down and grinds fo a halt. Ned Barker, this year's associate editor has had the cooperation of Central's administration, its club sponsors and coaches, and the T-Hawk staff. When Ned finds the news, he assigns the story to one of the staff members. The staff worker is often free to choose his own angle. He then must do the necessary researching and interviewing, and arrange for a picture if it seems appropriate. Writing the story is the staffer's next job. After typing it, he gives his story to the Editor-in-Chief, Ann Dunlap. Th en, Ann copyreads the story, writes a headline, and decides what style and size type should be used. The edited copy is sent next to Pontiac Typesetting. There its type is set and galley proofs are made. On its return to Central, the story is proofread. Next, Ann and her faculty advisor, Bud Domurath, cut up the galleys and then layout the four pages on dummy sheets. The dummies are sent to Central's Print Shop where instructor Richard Larpenter d an his students print the paper. At the shop, a folding machine folds the papers fwhen it works, that isj. The com l t d ' ' Union for distribution. Finally, the T-Hawk staff 'l mailing list. pe e copies are then delivered to the Student mais papers to eighty-five schools and individuals on its V K i U .inf ' f QI i Y Q l fm' . s., 5 Qi.: 4 r s f .f V ' 5 .4 -. r '. There s nothing wrong with digging ches It s healthy and these days it p well Too bad it doesn t often lead to something better It s not as easy as It used to be to work your Way up from scratch Today the really good jobs go to those who have the back- ground to get them. So whatever chance you have for more training and education, take it. If you dig ditches in the summer, get ahead by studying civil engineering in the fall. If you plan to work in an ofhce, take night courses. If you have a newspaper route, sock some dough away for more schooling. Remember what happened to the self-made man . . . he got educated. We are inclined to think that Central's T966-67 school year was very much worth the observation. To tell such a story has involved many cooperative Edit: individuals land a few resistant enough to create the necessary iournalistic challengei. Gratefully, we ac- knowledge contributions and assistance from: Harry Stuhldreher, Edwards Brothers, Inc., Ann Arbor, Mich- igan, Storer-Spellman Studios, Detroit, Michigan, Smithcraft Covers, Chicago, Illinois, Jack White School Pictures, Highland Park, Michigan, The Pontiac Press, Pontiac, Michigan, The Meadow Brook Theater, Oak- Sfqff land University, Rochester, Michigan, Art instructor Jean Smith and commercial art student Janice Morrill for our cover design, The Tomahawk Staff, Bud Do- murath, advisor, and Pontiac Central's faculty and student body. Some may simply say, that was the year that was. We hope that it will mean more than that be- cause of our efforts to record the year as completely as our deadline dates would allow.
