It is no secret that he is overwhelmed by extracurricular activities, pushed by a burning demand for academic success, and buried beneath a pile of hard covers and paperbacks. Through it all he’s usually “‘on target,” and though he often requires direction, he seems to seek his own direction. Enthusiasm! The Bright Vigor of Homecoming Works a Magic Spell Over All Who Play a Part in Anteneeban The bright vigor of homecoming season was mirrored again in the energetic activities and en- thusiasm of students all over the country. Busy hands bent toward decorations; fruitful minds yielding unique ideas; determined boys practicing and perfect- ing their individual passes or kicks or _ tackles; stomachs with butterflies, awaiting the results of the homecoming elections; shiny musical instruments, worn by hours of marching and practicing—all pave the way to the final goal—homecoming day. These preparations are well worth the results— shiny red, Rudolph noses; radiant faces; the crunch of fallen leaves beneath one’s feet; the crispness of the wind fluttering pom-poms, the exterior cold counter- acted by an interior that is warm with pride and the incense of harvest; the resolute faces of the team and the anxious; capricious expression of the coach; the shiver of excitement and pride as the Chief dances; the boisterous cheers emitting from the exhuberant hearts of every student at PCH, instilling enthusiasm and spirit to our team. Homecoming is a time of overwhelming and heartwarming spirit and pride for our school and football team. Every student is a significant part of this feeling—a significant part of Pontiac Central. 5, it id id al The Princess, June Sullivan, is symbolic of Pontiac's Indian heritage. Central’s team play for the first four games could have been described as primarily defensive. The Chiefs suffered defeats at the hands of five Valley rivals: However, improvement could be detected in the fine defensive play led by All Oakland County tackle Neal Peterson, Leroy Jackson, Tom Howard, and Cedric Patterson. A moral victory was achieved when a highly rated Flint Central team was forced to accept a close 6-0 victory. The Chiefs first win came against Bay City Handy. Halfback Karl Williams put Central on the scoreboard when he returned a Handy punt, 75 yards, for the games only touchdown, giving PCH a 7-0 victory. Junior Don Lavalais, running at halfback, sparked the gridders to two more winning efforts. Saginaw and Flint Northern were the unwilling victims of Jerry Murphy and his spirited offense. Halfback Ken Seay leans away from opposition. the 47 64 Season: Successful Senior members of the hard driving Chiefs who deserved recognition were Jim Crump (fullback), Ken Seay (half- back), Art Wiggins (halfback), Jim Gaiter (halfback), Ed Chase (punter and end), Frank Collias (end), Norm Coates (tackle), and Bob Hadden (center). Before the season could end, winter blasted the Chiefs’ gridiron with a snow storm. The night of November 20, with its freezing wind and bloodthirsty band of warriors, spelled doom for the Pontiac Northern gridders. Beneath that blanket of snow and ice, the Huskies left a tale of woe—for them. The mighty Chiefs sent the Northern pups home to their igloos to lick their wounds and to mourn their 18-0 defeat. Dorothy: In the land of Oz! 73 Dorothy scolds the Lion for biting Toto as the Tin Woodman and the Scarecrow look on, and the Lion replies, ‘I wouldn't have tried to bite a real little dog!”’ 74 Blown to the Land of Oz by a Kansas cyclone, Dorothy and her little dog, Toto, try to find a way to get back home. Wearing the magic silver slippers which she earned quite unexpectedly, and protected by the kiss of the Good Witch of the North, Doro- thy goes in search of the Wizard of Oz, believing that he can send her home. On the way she meets the Scarecrow, the Tin Wood- man, and the Lion, delightful new friends who join her in seek- ing the mighty Wizard. After many adventures they meet the Wizard, but not until Dorothy destroys the Wicked Witch of the West does she find a way home. The Wizard of Oz was pre- sented for the area grade schools in five performances, beginning Monday, November 16, and run- ning through Friday, November 20. There was one evening per- formance on Saturday, Novem- ber 21, to which children from the Oakland County Youth Center, Children’s Home, and Pontiac State Hospital were invited. Under the direction of Stuart Packard, the major characters were Lynn Chandler as Dorothy, Donna Glover as Toto, Jim Wood as the Scarecrow, Jim Bri- ney as the Tin Woodman, Alvin Anderson as the Lion, Rob Gor- don as the Wizard, and Char- lotte Janicki as the Wicked Witch of the West. No one in the land of Oz is safe from the evil spells of the Wicked Witch of the West. One of the more memorable sounds echoing through the halls of PCHS is that of the cheer- leading squad. Sponsored by Jean Smith, this group of twelve enthusiastic girls and two boys have performed at football and basketball games and at pep assemblies. Although a major portion of their energy is taken up by leading cheers at games and staging humorous pep assemblies, the members also take part in many other activities to encourage spirit and improve inter-school relations. Last summer the squad attended Camp-All American for a week, learning new cheers and exchanging ideas with other squads. One of the major projects this year was the sale of swim, basketball and wrestling team but- tons. On each button was a photograph of the respective teams. Other non-profit projects in- clude the selling of headbands, ribbons and orange and black bow ties. Varsity; first row: Coach Fred Zittle, Jim McClendon, Carl Arnold, Bob Wiggins, Jeffrey Lane. Central Chiefs Continue their Domination of District Basketball The PCH cagers have kept their tradition of not following predictions. To many, including Coach Fred Zittle, this should have been a season of re- building. The squad consisted of only five seniors, backed up by six juniors and one surprising sophomore, Cliff Benson. Carl Arnold and Jim McClendon were the back court mainstays while John Hooper, Jesse Evans and Willie Adams held down the front line. An inter-city rivalry with Pontiac Northern continued with three con- tests in favor of the Chiefs. The over-all record is now 14 wins for Central and only two for Northern. The mighty Chiefs completed an admirable 15-4 season, highlighted by a district championship and an upset over second ranked Hamtramck. 78 VARSITY SCHEDULE PCH 74— Waterford Twp. 67—Flint Central 64— Bay City Central 65—Arthur Hill 70— Midland 66— Pontiac Northern 65—Flint Northern 89—Bay City Handy 46— Saginaw 59— Flint Southwestern 90— Waterford 54—Saginaw 62— Pontiac Northern 86— Bay City Handy 59— Flint Southwestern 75—Pontiac Northern 91— Waterford 61—Hamtramck 56—Southfield 48 22 Se 50 56 56 By 54 5a 53 65 69 44 48 63 61 65 53 65 Jr. Varsity; first row: John Childs, Donald Lavalais, Edward Pruitt, Henry Eddington, Presntice Hill. It is the warm story of Maria Rainer, a postulant from the Nonnberg Abbey. Maria, full of the joy of living, finds great difficulty in adjusting to life in a convent. She enters the home of Captain von Trapp to be governess to his seven, motherless children. She soon wins the affection of the children with her warm, gentle ways and the songs she teaches them to sing; she also wins the love of their father. Even- tually, Maria leaves the convent to marry Captain von Trapp. But their happy marriage is soon shadow- ed by the Nazi take-over of Austria. Not wanting to serve under Hitler, Captain von Trapp takes his family and flees from Nazi persecution to the moun- tains of Austria. continued Max Detweiler (Gary Rosenthal) asks Elsa Schraeder (Carole Beckett), “Elsa, have you made up Georg’s mind yet? Is he going to marry you?” Elsa replies, “Oh, yes! He (Captain von Trapp) hasn't admitted it yet. There seems to be some- thing standing in his way.” Much of the charm of The Sound of Music is due to the Children’s songs. Renee Relyea, Elaine Bacow and Kristine Lindquist, who portray Gretl, Marta and Louisa, respective- ly, practive the song “Do, Re, Mi.” Having roles in the musical isn't all fun as Carole Beckett, Gary Rosen- thal and Nathan Jones find out when they receive helpful criticism. 107 continued The Sound of Music The students, under the direction of Stuart Packard, portrayed their parts with care and skill. The cast included; Maria, Edie Payne and Connie Vanderlind; Mother Abbess, Karen Lane and Evelyn Alderson; Captain von Trapp, Roger Putnam and Nathan Jones. The student director assisting Mr. Packard and Mr. Dempsey was Sue Moore. When Rolf Gruber (Jim Briney) asks Leisl (Jo Lynn Yansen) how old she is, she re- plies, ‘“Sixteen—what’s wrong with that?,”’ inspiring the song, ‘Sixteen, Going on Seventeen,”’ which talks about the prob- lems of growing up. Mock National Election Held in November “To stimulate evaluation of the past, the printed page, human relation, and education as a continuing process” is the goal of Pontiac Central as stated in its philosophy of education. The Social Studies Department, directed by Roland Hallquist, reflects this philosophy. This year’s student body had the opportunity to practice vot- ing procedures and to evaluate voting trends when they partici- pated in a mock, national elec- tion. For the first time, the highest percentage of votes came from the junior class. The student is employed on a part-time basis and is paid according to the wage scale for beginning employees. Work is closely supervised by the employer and the school coordinator. In addition to the instruc- tion and experience received on the job, these students receive in-school instruc- tion in subjects closely related to the work done on the job. Students receive regular credit each semester and must spend a minimum of fifteen hours per week on the job. Students who participate in this cooperative, on-the-job training pro- gram receive practical experience that cannot be provided in the school. Because the year must not be lost or forgotten, Pontiac Central, 64-65 has been recorded. It would not have been possible or worthwhile without the combined efforts of those who have dedicated themselves to this year and to better yearbooks. A special thanks to our photographers, Richard Marker and Randy Seiss; to our editors Sonja Bedford, Art Byers, Cindy Gowen, Nancy Hefner, Jo Johnson, Carol Johnston, Linda Lawrence, Kay Madsen, Marilyn Mihay, Sally Stark, Connie Vanderlind, and Mary Worthy; to the unsung heros of the ad. and copy staffs; to our advisor, Ken Brown; and to the teachers who condoned and under- stood our “‘enthusiastic’’ behavior. May we also thank Francis Staley and his administration, Ted Carlson and the printshop, the Tomahawk staff, the Pontiac Press, Lyndon School Studios, Storer- Spellman Studios, and Harry Stuldreher of Edwards Brothers.
