Tomahawk advisor, David Muxworthy, Carole Rapaport, Kathy Sutt, Carol Godoshian, and Janice Shepherd battle the wind to decorate their homecoming car. Dave Brown and Dick Crawford construct the framework of the three feathers for this year’s homecoming float. Chieftains, chieftains, go, go,” echoes in an atmosphere of homecoming excite¬ ment as Sue Huntzinger and Stephanie Hardenburg appeal for student support. The homecoming court for 19$4 are: Ralph Koprince, Purvis Jones, Chief Craig Zadosko, Princess Monita Calhoun, Pat Gentry, and Grethel Hunter. Chilled air of autumn filled with enthusiasm The chief, princess, and court reflect the joy and spirit of home¬ coming after the presentation of the chief’s spear and the princess necklace. A canopy of fall color covers the annual Autumn Ante- neeban festivities. The chilled air of autumn is filled with enthusiasm as the Chief does his traditional dance amid cheers of support. The team strives for victory. The clock ticks off the last seconds of the Homecoming game, and students begin the transition to the tranquil at¬ mosphere of “Shades of Autumn.” The last phase of a day filled with reunion, excitement, spirit, and pride comes to an end: i ftjtl Ns 1 1 w W3m 1 IpfliliP As princess, Monita Calhoun holds the symbolic headdress of the chief, as Craig Zadosko prepares to perform the traditional war dance. Spirits surge in response as the chief, Craig Zadosko, begins the traditional war dance during the half-time ceremonies of the homecoming game. The football season becomes an enduring memory of colorful animation as the cheerleaders, the band, and the chief and court combine to honor PCHS. The warrior’s dance is finished; he thrusts his spear into the air as a symbol of determination and pride. Coach William Richardson demonstrates new techniques, not hy explanation, hut hy joining the team in practice. With avid alertness the varsity football squad readies for action as coach Mel Nuss reviews the nucleus of his backfreld. Blocking, hiking and passing are three essentials which must he practiced and perfected. - Endurance is one vital factor of any football player. The team practices blocking by hitting a pad on the sled. Planning strategy for an upcoming game starts during an afternoon of practice. Art Van Ryzin and Jim Bowie review each play. Inexperience stymies gridders A team’s success is not spotlighted by its victories. It, however, is ignited by an enthusiastic school spirit and sparked by the endless effort of each player. Mr. Szabo expressed the feeling of all the foot¬ ball coaches when he stated, “This year’s football team was the nicest bunch of boys that Pontiac Central has ever produced. They work hard all the time and put forth their best effort for every game. The only disadvantage was that the team lacked experience.” Coach Tom Osier believes in never “throw¬ ing in the towel” — just using it. Six legs . . . count ’em . . . six (6)! And only two numbers . .. and one jersey! 1963 FOOTBALL Bay City Central Arthur Hill Midland Flint Central Bay City Handy Saginaw Flint Southwestern Flint Northern Pontiac Northern SCHEDULE 0-33 0-34 6- 27 0-47 6-6 0-18 13-33 7- 46 0-21 The 1963 Varsity football squad consists of, first row: Jim Rich¬ ards, Dick Rouse, Jan Anderson, Dave Houts, Dick Gooley, Esjaye Whiters, Jim Mitchell, John Smith, Dick Shafer, Tom Rotundo, George Jackson. Second row. Richard Northcross, Dennis Wright, Ed Chase, Willie Harris, Ross Ludwick, Danny Irwin, Dave Ed¬ wards, Walter Johnson, Kenneth Seay, Boh Irwin, Dan Baker. Third row: Sylvester Rohinson, Donald Lavalais, Jerry Murphy, Karl Williams, Jim Crump, Walter Horton, Tom Jenkins, Jim Gaiter, Normon Coates, Jim Knox. Fourth row: Leroy Jackson, Arthur Wiggins, Neal Peterson, Dave Brown, Boh Hadden. Endurance is essential to prepare a team for successful plays. Despite the fact that Pontiac Centrals junior varsity football team was constantly relinquishing their players to the varsity throughout the year, they still finished the season with a creditable 4-4 record. Under the di¬ rection of coaches Art Van Ryzin and William Richard¬ son, the Little Chiefs displayed leadership, determination, and poise while on the gridiron. Noted players, Clay, Elliot, Howard and Lane, may appear quite often in the column for the PCHS varsity team next fall. Paul Dellerba and Francis Staley look to the future as prom¬ ising players practice. A half-time of hurt and exhaustion breeds determination for Les Snyder. Andy Stowe stares at a deserted field during a half-time huddle. JV Gridders advance to varsity «fc,. The Junior Varsity Gridders this year are, first row: Coach Wil¬ liam Richardson, coach Art Van Ryzin, Willy Elam, Ted Fisher, Larry DeVaney, Cedric Patterson, Marvin Quince, Cecil Powell, Dan Rodriquez, Ron LeMarbe, coach Max Hasse. Row two: Wil¬ liam Clay, Leroy Farnsworth, Gene Holbrook, Terry Schmidt, Harold Spann, Fes Snyder, Mike Villereal, Alan Baker, Percy Pleasant, John Wolf. Third row: Jeff Lane, Vince Elliot, Mark Post, Harold Smith, Roger Shaefer, Paul Roberts, Rick Fox, John Sluka, James Shorters, Herbert Mullen. Row four. Dave Miller, Tom Howard, Dave Sturgeon, Charles Taylor, Joe Edwards, Dave Gray, Andy Stowe, Warren Petiprin, Jim Stockwell, Bill Lacy. Coach William Richardson gives personal attention and help to each player. He stresses the need for solid blocking. Tension and ambition come together as coach Art Van Ryzin gives last minute instructions before a beginning quarter. To Bruce Bigler, successful training originates with lunch. Mike Mumby and coach Roger Shepler both advocate the princi¬ ple, Practice makes perfect.” The 1963 Harriers are, first row: jerry Love, Richard Anderson, Robert Lawrence, Walter Frazier, William Hollis, Martin Acosta, Roger Putnam, Mike Mumby. Second row: Bonner Teasley, Har¬ old McDonald, Hershal Owens, Ralph Morgan, Ronald Adams, Richard Gorman, Bruce Bigler. PCH Harriers finish third in SVC with 3-5-1 record Pontiac Central’s 3-5-1 cross country record may not seem impressive, but there was only one returning letterman and one senior. One can understand why Roger Shepler is satis¬ fied with the 1963 season and optimistic about the coming fall, when six of the seven varsity harriers will be returning on the team. Paced by Robert Lawrence, Mike Mumby, Bill Hollis, and Martin Acosta, Pontiac Cen¬ tral put on their best performance on October 17th to capture third place in the Saginaw Valley meet at Swartz Creek. Maintaining good grades is required of all cross countrymen. Walter Frazier studies with the assistance of coach Roger Shepler. Robert Lawrence receives useful advice from 1962 star Harrier Richard Johnson in one of the early meets of the season. Lawrence was one of the leaders in every meet and the only runner to qualify in the state meet. 1964 CROSS COUNTRY SCHEDULE PCH 40 OPPONENT Saginaw j SCORE 60 40 Arthur Hill 35 28 Waterford 28 49 Flint Central 18 49 Midland 66 24 Waterford Kettering 31 37 Flint Southwestern 21 8 th Oakland County 31 Flint Northern 24 3rd Valley 35 Pontiac Northern 25 7th Regionals 55 Herringbone Haven Ski Club president Rob Powers and sponsor John Zimmerle go over plans for a coming ski retreat with vice-president Richard Anderson and secretary-treasurer Carolyn Gauns- bauer. The first place team was the Allev-Oops. Trophies for the first semester were awarded at the bowling ban¬ quet at West Side Lanes, where the club meets to bowl every Wednesday after school. At the beginning of the banquet, “Red Pins” were bowled, for which various trophies were also award¬ ed. During the year about 45 trophies are awarded to encourage improvement through competi¬ tion. The top team of the first semester. “The Alley Oops”, were awarded tro¬ phies at the bowling banquet. They are: John Casper, Sue Cox, Steff Ben¬ nett, and Ron Kinney. John Casper, president of Bowling Club, displays excellent form, follow through, and a look of determination— the championship style. Senior bowler, Steff Bennett, not only bowls for relaxation but enjoys the stiff competition offered by the other club members. ■ , , m , v . Second row: Manager Paul Wine, Walter Moore, Carl Arnold, Bob Wiggins, George Cole, Jeffrey Lane, Ross Ludwick, Lessel Hanspard, and manager Ralph Candelaris. Coach Fred Zittle was chosen hy the Pontiac Press as Oakland County Coach of the Year. Jim Johnson gets the jump hall against Grosse Pointe in the first game of the season, while Gerald Henry waits for the hall. Number 13 scores again, and again, and again. Melvin DeWalt, Central ' s top scorer, puts in two of his 25 points in this game against Grosse Pointe. Hard Practice Produces Another Top Team At the start of the basketball season, Central’s chances of becoming a state power were very slim. The team was in¬ experienced. Coach Fred Zittel began his first season as head mentor. But this team did have one thing going for them — teamwork. They practiced hard every day. Guards Alvin Keel and William Morgan worked on passing to forwards Gerald Henry and Melvin DeWalt. DeWalt practiced his corner shot and Henry his layups. John¬ son developed his rebounding style, and Moore his smooth jump shot. At midseason, the Chiefs were riding a six-game winning streak, and were rated third in the state by the Associated Press. Losses to Saginaw and Flint Southwestern dropped PCH out of the top ten, but that didn’t matter. The team proved they were worthy of their early ratings in the state tournaments by advancing all the way to the state semi-finals. Despite the defeat, the Chiefs finished with an excellent 17-4 record, and provided students with plenty of excitement all season long. Performing one of his many moves under the basket, Gerald Henry hooks a jump shot to the surprise of a Grosse Pointe player. Central won 71-52 as Henry scored 14 points. Alvin Keel drops in a close-up jump shot over the head of Jerry Reese as the Chiefs heat Northern, 69-59. 1963-64 Varsity Basketball PCH OPPONENT SCORE 71 Grosse Pointe 52 63 Flint Central 64 91 Bay City Central 55 70 Arthur Hill 64 90 Midland 43 73 Pontiac Northern 60 86 Flint Northern 69 81 Bay City Handy 52 53 Saginaw 65 68 Flint Southwestern 70 69 Saginaw 67 69 Pontiac Northern 59 93 Bay City Handy 77 74 Flint Southwestern 66 58 Arthur Hill 56 62 Pontiac Northern 58 79 Waterford 59 56 Clarkston 52 86 Mt. The counseling department, under the direction of Don¬ ald McMillan, constantly seeks the best program through which students may learn to assume the responsibility for intelligent self-direction. To guide, instruct, and inform is the counselors’ main concern. One aspect of their work involves the testing program. Several aptitude and interest tests, such as the National Edu¬ cational Development Test for tenth graders, the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test for both eleventh and twelfth graders, are offered during the year. These tests provide the students with a purposeful means of understanding himself and his needs. Once these basic needs are recognized, the student and counselor are able to plan together an appropriate curriculum. your right hand) down on me, I would like to thank each of you for your contribution toward the wonderful school year which made the 1964 Quiver possible. A special thanx to the editors, Doreen Beacco, Stephanie Bennett, Grethel Hunter, Gerda Jur- genson, Anne Madsen, Chris Miller, Barb Olds, Kit Widdifield, and Cheryl Wilton who tracked down the multitude of happenings at Central, and to our photographer, Ron Austin, who put them into pictures. Thanx also to Francis Staley and the understand¬ ing and cooperative administration, faculty, club advisors, and coaches who put up with our con¬ stant intrusions; and to Storer-Spellman Studios and Modern Yearbook Co. and Mack Suprunowica who, regardless of our missed deadlines, car through with our completed story. Last, but never least, thank you Ted Carlson and the Print Shop, and also the Tomahawk Staff for your always ready and helping hand. From the Quiver staff and myself, a personal thank you to our advisor, Ken Brown, who has given a unique touch to many Qiiivers in the past, and who will continue with manv in the future. Thanx KB. Monita Calhoun, Editor-in-Chief
