j acuU CmerUud HAZEL ALLCHIN Miss Hazel Allchin has been a member of our faculty since 1923. She is retiring this Jime after spending many successful and happy years teaching geometry, trigonometry, and algebra. Miss AUchin has always enjoyed working with high-school young people. Before coming to Pontiac she was principal of Williamston and Northville high schools. She attended Michigan State Normal College where she received her bachelor ' s degree and Columbia University where she got her master ' s degree. Miss Allchon started Pontiac High ' s girl reserve group which has become the Y-Teens. In the future Miss Allchin plans to make her home in Webberville with her sister. CLARA GAYLORD Miss Clara Gaylord, who retired this year, had been teaching the art of sewing for thirty years in the big brick teepee. She attended Michigan State College and then taught for a few years in her home town of Cheboygan. Following that she went to Honolulu whre she taught at the Komehamla Girl ' s School. When she returned to the United States, she did welfare work for the Teimessee Coal and Iron Company in Birmingham, Alabama. She also did settlement work at Welcome Hall in Buffalo. Pontiac students miss having her among our faculty. HELEN ANN PARIS Miss Helen Ann Paris, who retired last summer, had long been a member of our English Department. She is a native of Cleveland, Ohio, and received two degrees from the University of Michigan. Before coming here she taught elsewhere in Michigan and at St. Teresa ' s University in Winona, Minnesota. Coming to Pontiac in 1925, she has always been an honored member of our faculty. Miss Paris has been chairman of the English Department She has always enjoyed working with young people and liked especially to teach English VIII. Miss Paris has traveled both in the United States and abroad, and attended Oxford University in England. In the future she plans to live wherever it is best for her health. ARTHUR SELDEN Mr. Arthur Selden, who retires this June, has always been a prominent figure in Pontiac ' s school system. Growing up in Pontiac, Mr. Selden received his early education here and then attended the University of Michigan. He was principal of three high schools before coming to Pontiac to teach in 1920. He was soon named assistant principal, having charge of the seventh and eighth grades and teaching college history in the junior college here at that time. During this time he was faculty advisor of the QUIVER for four years. When Eastern was opened in 1925, he became principal there and in 1929, when Washington was established, he was made principal there. Returning here in 1948, he now is co-ordinator of secondary social studies along with his work, at P. H. S. ARTHUR SWEET Mr. Arthur Sweet, who retired last year, had been a member of Pontiac High ' s Chemistry Department since 1930. Mr. Sweet attended Michigan State Normal College and received his bachelor ' s and master ' s degrees at the University of Michigan. Before coming to P. H. S., he taught in River Rouge and in St. Joseph. While teaching here, Mr. Sweet started the Chem-Physics Club and continued to be faculty advisor of it until his retirement. Mr. Sweet very much enjoyed working with the students, especially those who were particularly interested in chemistry. 14
