Our Vocational Department is doing much to provide pre-job training. Pon- tiac is an industrial community, and an ef- fort is made to provide the kind of courses which will prepare students for effective and efficient employment in industry through such courses as Machine Shop, Automotives and Drafting. Speech students may participate in a number of activities designed to prepare students for effective speech work. Basic courses in speech are offered as well as specialized courses in dramatics and radio broadcasting. Our Radio Workshop broadcasts weekly programs over Radio Station WCAR. Practical home problems are dealt with realistically in our Home Economics De- partment. Courses are offered in sewing and cooking. Curricula prepares Our Instrumental Music Department and Vocal Department are outstanding for their quality of work. We have a very fine band, and we are equally proud of the choir, boys and girls glee clubs, and ensembles. The Department of Athletics plays an important part in the curricula at Pontiac. A wide selection of courses is offered. Those who preier team sports may parti- cipate in football, basketball, swimming, cross-country, track, golf, tennis and base- ball. Individual sports include swimming, tennis, golf, and tumbling. Through the girls' physical education program, gym- nastics, tumbling, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, swimming, archery, and cor- rective gymnastics are offered. Our Science Department is noteworthy in the range of subjects offered. Biology, physics, chemistry and senior science give the students interested in science an op- Future Citizens of the World portunity to make a selection in the field of their choice. Because of the demand for office work- ers, our Commercial Department has grown and expanded to a point where we now' offer many types of training for every student in the department. Typing, bookkeeping, office practice, shorthand, office equipment and business machine courses are only a few of the phases em- phasized. The Mathematics Department offers courses in algebra, geometry, and trigon- ometery. v The English Department provides train- ing in the fundamentals of composition, letter writing, American and English liter- ature. Students interested in journalism may write for the school paper. Many types of experiences connected with the publication of a paper are available to these students. Our printing department prepares the copy and publishes the paper. Creative art, the brush pen, pencil, ham- mer and chisel, clay, and chalk, is em- phasized in a comprehensive art program. Commercial art, designing, interior decor- ation, landscaping are only a few of the phases of art work emphasized. The social sciences are emphasized throughout the school system. Along with the ordinary history courses, Pontiac offers courses in foreign relations, Amer- ican problems, government, economics and consumers' education. Every effort is made to develop in our students pride and respect for our national traditions and in- stitutions. Vocational Education The Vocational Education Building plays a very impcrtant part in the school careers of approximately 400 students each semester. This building contains classrooms, shops, and ofiices. The equipment used in the shop courses is of the best so that the student has every opportunity to obtain his training under the most favorable conditions. Another feature of the vocational courses is the related in- struction which the student receives. Each teacher is efficiently trained in his particular field so that the student, on completion cf his course, has acquired not only practical shop experience but also a knowledge of the subjects related to his field of training. Included in the Vocational Education Building is the vocational office which issues all working permits for children under 18 resid- ing in the school district of Pontiac. It also serves as a counseling center for vocational students and schedules vocational courses. Advisor-Mrs. Fourni: 62 Quiver With the fifty-first publication of the QUIVER, students on the staff had the usual deadlines to meet and make-up problems to work out. However, as always, these prob- lems are overshadowed by the satisfaction which staff members feel when the publica- tion date rolls around. The theme of the 1949 QUIVER is our preparation for participation in world pro- gress. This theme was chosen because of the great need for deep thought, discussion, and action if there is to be a lasting peace. No one will be better equipped for this than today's students if they take advantage of their educational opportunities. This is what the QUIVER staff and its sponsor, Mrs. Betty Fournier, have tried to illustrate. The staff sincerely hopes that the students can look at this 1949 QUIVER in future years and enjoy a flashback at classes, teachers, extra-curricular activities, fellow students, and the many things which helped to make their 1949 school year unforgettable. 1 Tomohowk The sponsor of our school paper for 1948-1949 is Mr. Harold Dearing. With the co-operation of the entire staff the TOMAHAWK is distributed to the student body once a week. All of the students en- joy the weekly paper. The paper prints club activities, sport and social event, dramatic news, editorials, and gossip . The business staff solicits advertise- ments from the Pontiac merchants to help finance the paper. Every week articles are assigned to each editor, and he in turn assigns the articles to his staff. The most vital and interesting news is selected for publication. A student who belongs to the staff has the opportunity to gain experience in the field of journalism. He may go on and make journalism his life work or he may gain enjoyment from the work during his high school days. Row 1: N. Walser, J. Rivard, F. Barber, S. Fedonis, P. Tsekery, S. Boyer, G. Student Council Student participation in school government has been very successful in Pontiac High School. It has made for better understanding between the faculty and the students, and in the past years the Student Council has accomplished many projects through this co- operation. One of the successful 1948-1949 endeavors of the Student Council was the bonfire held before the Catholic Central-Pontiac High game. It helped to arouse school spirit which was important in Pontiac's victory. The sponsor of the Student Council is Mr. C. T. Porsman. MONITORS, FIRST SEMESTER Row 1: E. Kiraka, S. Ashley, C. These programs are arranged for different school- age groups. Members of the Radio Work- shop are often called upon to give special performances for outside groups. We are very proud of Vonnie Brown who placed first in P. H. S. and who took fourth place in the Michigan HI Speak for Demo- cracy contest. Top Right: J. Kitson, R. Bowen. Bottom Right: G. Smaltz, S. Also, the prospective member must earn ten points. These ten points may be earned by playing the major role in one three-act play, or by playing small roles in several plays. For these reasons, it is an honor to be a member of the club. After being approved by the sponsor, the National Thespians accept candidates for member- ship. Row 1: B. McDonald, G. Reynolds, V. It is the story, familiar to all, of the poor boy who comes into possession of a wondrous lamp with a genie able to grant all wishes. The boy Aladdin was played by Kenny Stephens. Jacqueline Dudley was Princess Adora, the lady Aladdin woos and wins. Aladdinis mother and the Sultan, Adorais father, were portrayed by Pat Cartier and Gerald Reynolds. The villainous African magician was played by Perry Dell. The annual spring play, presented in March, was Our Hearts Were Young and Gay. This is a story of Cornelia Otis Skinner and Emily Kim- brough making a voyage abroad. It tells Cornelia's and Emily's adventures in 1923 with their ship-- board boyfriends Leo McEvoy and Dick Winters, and Monsieur De La Croix, who gives acting lessons to Cornelia. Cornelia was protrayed by Mary Maze, Emily by Marjorie Cote and Corenna Morton, Leo by Jim Lafnear, Dick by Ronnie Fiscus, Mrs. Skinner by Sophia Fedonis, Otis Skinner by John Daugherty, and Monsieur De La Croix by Perry Dell. Clinching the starting positions on a squad of twelve were Dave Miller and Jack Main as forwards, Esmo Tee Woods and Al Pink- ston at guards, and Ralph Grubb at center. At half year the capable Chiefs had a re- cord of three wins and five loses. At this time Dave Miller, who led the Saginaw Valley scorers in '48, and Gene Bone were graduated from P. H. S. STAR QUINTET ..... To start the '49 season Coach Van Ryzin set up an almost entirely new team. Bud Moore came up to the Varsity from the Re- serves, Pinkston switched to a forward, and Guy Sparrow filled the other forward spot. Grubb still held the pivot job and Woods and Moore played the back court. On March 4, 1949, the Chiefs ended their season in third place at a 6-6 standing. Coach John Petrakis' Little Chiefs fought a scrappy battle all the way to a 5-7 final valley standing. The Papoose Club was much better than the record indicated. The whole equals the sum of its parts -that phrase well illustrates P 0 n t i a c ' s 1948 Cross-Country team. The ef- fects of team balance, spirit, and strength did not, however, bear fruit until the second running of the Saginaw Val- ley Meet. At that time, with determination high, our team eked out a championship tie with Flint Central. It was the first tie in Saginaw Val- ley history. Early meets were disap- pointing, with the team losing all Valley encounters while triumphing only over Walled Lake and Cranbrook. Lost through graduation for the '49 season will be Bob Haney and Russ Sandquist.
