It's Story Time! says Chuck Silverman, announcer, as Miss Hiller gives him the cue at exactly 1:45:03 p. m. and Pat Pipe watches the gain in the control-room. Do- lores Opie and Barbara Pyle await their cue at the mike while Norma Hoyt, Jane Vieg, Joann Vackaro, Bill Barnett and Bob Betts sit in the studio waiting for their turn. Ten years ago one of Pontiac High Schoolls most outstanding organizations was start- ed as a clubgv in 1940, the Pontiac High School Radio Wforkshop began broadcasting over station VVCAR. The X'Vorkshop is under the competent direction ol Miss Ola B. Hiller, who both writes and directs the programs. In Radio Wlorkshop students receive training in radio microphone technique and engineering technique. Yale at Pontiac High School feel that the Wforkshop and Miss Hiller are doing a great job. The Golden Anniversary Edition of the Quiver salutes the Pontiac High School Radio YVorkshop in its tenth year, and wishes it God-speed. Viola came with a distinct sense of shock and personal loss, not only to all his associates young and old in Pontiac High School, but to this community as a. whole. For more than twenty years he Carried on his educational work in our midst w-ith a loyalty, devotion and success that only a fine teacher could achieve. Perhaps we can pay him no higher tribute than this - that he was, in every sense of the word, a real teacher. He gave of his knowledge, his time and his strength unstintingly. He loved his workg he loved his pupils in that work. Friend, counselor, guide, hundreds of one-time pupils will regret his passing. Safe in their hearts, they will grant him that earthly immortality that love alone can give. - M. B. Dewagon XVe have been burdened with a sorrow For a friend to us sovdear l-Ias gone to meet his Maker And Gabriel to hear. He has gone to join the angels In the Heavenly Choir, For when you hear the call of God, Your days on earth expire. He's gone to St. Peter At the Golden Gate, For he had an appointment - He couldn't be late. So don't mourn, my friends, All the day throughg For that, day is coming, For me and for you. When we too must yield To the voice of God, And on the Golden Street With our friend we'll trod. - Ed Haskins .O JANUARY SENIORS NJ Donna Puddock 1 Treasureo' Harold Shoup 5 President - ' 1 Eugene Terbush Vice President 25 'X X , Marilyn Griffin Secretary On Thursday, January 28, at 8:15 p. m., approximately 187 Seniors wore caps and gowns to their commencement exercises at the Pontiac Senior High School Boys' Gymnasium. Its activities include vocational education lor students who desire to enter employment in busi- ness and trade occupations upon graduation from high school. Trade and related instruction is provided for cooperative apprenticeship students who are employed on a part-time work and school basis. Certain classes are ollered to college engineering students and to general curric- ulum students. A large number ol' veterans who are completing high school are participating on the day program. Adult classes in the evening school at the present time consist of a large proportion of vet- erans who are taking work on both high school and trade extension basis, apprentices and employees from Pontiac's many industrial plants and farm groups who are learning welding. 69 Cutting Stock in Print Shop X Operating Jig-Saw in Pattern Shop rff 40 ' - x K i M -'4 I f .4 X 2 P... ii., 4 ,, N I1 A E9 rl L J . The name of the book, Les Dernier Des Espirits , was changed at its second publication two years later to Quiver. Work on the yearbook todaylis a good deal different from 50 years ago. Little did the staff of that first Pontiac High yearbook think that the book it started would ever be dedicated to a Radio Workshop. This is one instance which shows the growth of our school. Looking at the pictures of the 1948 class, we find it a little different from the class of '98, which was 24 strong. Seated: J. Price, B. VanYVelt, P. McFarland, M. Griffin, L. Dulfrain, M. This popular Weekly school paper keeps its readers informed on happenings in and about the school and, at the same time, keeps them amused. Aside from these all important tasks, The Hatchet provides an excellent opportunity for newspaper training for its 50 statf members. It is due to its hard-working personnel that The Toma- hawk won a place as a first class paper in the National Press Association for the school year, 1946-1947. m41 Q QJEIU5 F ... cu 9 .. :s U oi cf au ... 4-1 6-I -r' ... These are obtained un- der the direction of Dale C. Harris, and all of the students are proud of the top standing in the state which the band has gained' in playing for Pontiac High. Very early in the morning would you like to be marching in a chilly atmos- phere? Why of course notg you, like most of us, would much rather be sleeping. But not the band members - their early morn- ing practices are appreciated too at Fri- day-night football games when we can lis- 77 LIBRARIANS J. Evans, M. Brumitt, D. Govednik, Brown, D. Ball, NI. Without the band so much would be lacking. Band members have hard work practic- ing and marching, and still keep up their studies. A lot of the members attend sum- mer school in order to continue playing in the band, but they don't mind or com- plain. All their work is worth it, if they are able to do the one thing they enjoy the most - playing in the Pontiac High Band and wearing the black and orange uniforms. vt? H 11 SV' ig! G. R. A., which was started in 1945 by Miss Helen Davies and is now under her direction, has SPORTS inter-scholastic play-days, play- ing all girls' sports with out-of- town teams. Many girls, who are interested, are training for relereeing and umpiring for physical education experience. The girls have been trying to put through a new point system which means that after a girl has earned 1,500 points, she will receive a P. H. S. letter. G. R. A. members meet on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wed- nesdays in the girls' gym from 3:15 to 4:15 to take care of cur- rent business and then to play. A The Synchronized Swimmers, who meet five days a Week dur- ing school hours and on their free time, too, have had their second water carnival season. During the first part of the second semester these girls fin- ished off their ballet techniques and synchronized formations. Theslatter part of the semester was spent on working out par- ticular numbers for the water show. The girls made their own costumes for this show, which was done entirely to music. Some formations in the show were composed of as many as 20 girls, and others ran down to duets and solos. 102 MEL fx 6 LIQGA r L 1 'H at i 29: bi 0 2 - 4 Gsqqh I sf C. 31 if, The little Chiefs under Coach Iohn Parsons got off to a Huge crowds enjoyed the foot- ball thrillers at Mfisner Stadium staged by Pontiac's Varsity Squad during the 4'7 season. Likewise the Junior Varsity had a big year, bringing home the bacon in form of the S. V. L. championship, and the Sophs surprised all with a brilliant undefeated season. Coach Harold Smead's team opened up against Hazel Park, and Dan Searle made the first touchdown of the year by intercepting a forward pass. The team then went on to trample Hazel Park 47-0. Mt. Clemens, although putting up a terrific battle, succumbed to Pon- tiac 20-0. W'hen the Chiefs, led by big Jim Engleman and speedy .lack Cole, smeared Bay City 53-'7 for their third straight win, all eyes focused on the game with the Flint Central squad. A record crowd appeared at YVisner Stadium. The first half was a real thriller with Flint Central scoring first on a blocked kick and Pontiac tying on a pass to quarterback Frank Xvilson. The upstaters proved too big for the mighty midgets and roared through to a 34-7 victory. Pontiac rallied the next week to defeat Lansing Sexton here, l4-l3, in a Wild game of I2 fumbles. Captain Bob Poe's excellent defensive play and Searle's snagging of a 45-vard pass in the lagging minutes of the game led the way to victory. The, P. H. S. team traveled to Saginaw Eastern to bow once more in defeat by a l2-7 score. Hallowe'en night Owosso came down hoping to avenge eight straight defeats from Smead- coached teams, but absorbed its ninth loss 14-0. Saginaw Arthur Hill's powerful eleven had little trouble winning l3-7. Flint Northern, undefeated in the state, trounced Pontiac 26-7. This ended the Chiefs' season with a record of five wins and four losses. Outstanding for consistent good playing were Iingleman, Searle, Bud Temple, Bob Poe, Jim Beal, and VVilson who made l3 interceptions during the year. slow sea- sonal start, dropping their first two games by the same score, 25-0, against the Highland Park and the Keego Harbor varsity teams. The -lay Vees started hitting their stride when a hard smashing Bay City squad came to town. Through the efforts of Mike Ashley and Bob Gaines, the black and orange emerged the victor in a close score of l4-l3. A stubborn Flint Central crew fought a losing fight against the backfielcl of Pontiac to be knocked off 12-6. Pontiac whipped De- troit Countrv Day for its third straight. Saginaw Eastern's small, fast team met defeat under the hard-hitting line of the V.'s. Gaines, Ash- ley, and Bill Carie came through for the tallies to conquer Eastern 27-0. Little Chiefs stepped out of Valley competition to play Mt. Clemens. Al Pinkston and Gil McCollom highlighted the game with two 50-yard iaunts and went on to win 40-0. The J. V.'s topped Sagi- naw Arthur Hill 47-0 to make it six straight. Pontiac then met an un- defeated Flint Northern squad at l'Visner Stadium for the champion- ship. They held the Vikings to one first down in the first half while chalking up l3 points. Tables were turned in the second half, however, and the Northernites threw a scare into Pontiac by amassing two touchdowns them- selves. Juniors managed to smoth- er both kicks to sew up the game 13-12. 105 v ' ii . .,. . Jw.. . ' , inf' Q Cx , Q., ,. ffw fdis .' With only four meets to go, their chances for the 1947-48 title were excellent. Pontiac High School splashers opened up with Royal Oak and were surprised by absorbing a 45-39 loss. Arthur Hill, last year's Valley Champions, came down with a powerful squad, and the Chlorine Clan upset them 45-39. The over-powering strength of Pontiac was too much for Jackson, and they bowed out 50-34. Captain Tom Reigel and Hal Shoup led the team to victory over Flint Central 43-37. The Chiefs crushed University High 59-24. A weak Bay City team was lost in the water as the Chiefs won 61-21. Jackson came back with a revengeful look and collapsed 51-33. At this time Pontiac was considered one of the state's best teams. Ypsilanti went under while the Pontiac bathers chalked up another victory 59-25. The Chiefs broke record after record. The three main swimmers leading the way were Reigel, Shoup, and Mickey Goodwin. Ann Arbor toppled under the steady swimmers of P. H. S. Back into Val- ley competition Flint Central hoped to avenge the first meeting, but Central went home with l another, 11os's 49-26. A low-powered Hazel Park crew came' to the pool in Pontiac and was downed 68-16. junior Varsity went to the State Meet in Bay City and managed to come in third place after a fine showing in the preliminaries. 1 1 1 1 1 First Row: J.
