NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The Pontiac chapter of the National Honor Society was formed in May, 1924, and consisted of twenty-five members. Since then, membership has steadily grown. This organization was formed primarily to stimulate a desire among students to excel in scholarship, leadership, service, and character. In addition to these important qualities, the student must be a senior and in the upper one-third of his class. Selection of members is governed entirely by the faculty. Any student can be proud to be a member of the National Honor Society, for it is the high- est honor any member of the class can obtain. It signifies not only that the student is a good scholar, but also that he has shown high moral character and a sincere interest in school activities. The duties of these people are to gather all the news around the high school and to publish it in the weekly edition of the paper. Each reporter is assigned to a beat and has one or two teachers to interview every week, securing from them the news of the various classes and groups. During the school year, the Tomahawk has supported every worth-while campaign, using all the facilities available. One of the outstanding issues of the year was the special football edition that hon- ored the Valley League Champs. The success of the staff ' s endeavors is proved by the number of outstanding pages that have been edited. The adviser of this organization is Miss Florence Day. 46 UI VER Row 7: Joan Olsen, Florence Pros- kch, Patricia Miner, Dorothy Harri- son, Kathryn Dempsey, Patricia Karkau, Phyllis Fisler Row 2: Joyce Winkley, Virginia Pet- ers, Peggy Jones, Patricia Knudsen, Mary Jo Shaw, Harriet Koch, Ruth DeConick, Elaine Jolly Row 3: Priscilla Colvin, Gloria Swanson, Elmo Jones, Roy Auge, Robert Vosburg, Donald Nesbitt, Phil Chivikos, Joe Nederlander, Lillian Russel For the past few months the Quiver staff has been burning the midnight oil, pasting panels, writing copy, taking pictures, drawing cartoons, and col- lecting and typing all the valuable material. All of th ; s has been done so that you may receive your Quiver. The Quiver staff worked hard this year to get the necessary supplies needed for this annual book. Each one did his best to produce for the students and faculty a book which portrays school life at Pontiac High School. Every page contains something new, perhaps some- thing you as an individual never knew. The result is the 1944 Quiver. 47 DEBATE Row J: Virginia Veig, Miss E. Thomas, Miss F. Hoffman, Miss A. These boys are the braves at football and basketball games, selling candy, ice-cream, pop corn, and peanuts to the spectators who cheer the chiefs on to victory. Having discontinued giving their annual scholarship for the duration of the war, the Hi-Y boys have decided to donate this money to the Wisner Stadium Fund. The Hi-Y holds meetings once a week. These meetings are of a social and business nature and alternate each week. The purpose of this organization is to promote better citizenship and better character, also to band boys together to stand for Clean Living, Clean Speech, Clean Athletics, and Clean Scholarship. Speakers are often pres- ent at the meetings, who discuss the problems of youth of today and the war. The boys are always willing to give their services for any good cause. The adviser of this organization is Mr. Watson. 52 GIRL RESERVES The Girl Reserves club is sponsored by Miss Elma Waterman. The club activities include drives, parties, and projects. The profits go to the Red Cross, and toward the scholarship given to any eligible girl in high school. The 10-A mixer, jointly sponsored with the Hi-Y, is given each semester for the new 10-A ' s in which they become better acquainted with one another The Girl Reserves serve at many banquets throughout the year. The meetings are held in room 127 every other Monday night at seven o ' clock. An educational or entertaining program usually follows the business meeting. Many times prominent Pontiac speakers lecture to the group. A new club project this year was the sale of school pencils. For weeks after this sale, the orange and black pencils bearing the school song were seen and used by teachers and students alike. Also, this club jointly sponsored, with the Hi-Y, a series of lectures on boy and girl relations. To be a member of this service organization, a girl must maintain a B average. At the impressive formal initiation, each new member lights her white candle from a burning red, white, or blue one, which represent cour- age, purity, and loyalty respectively. Organized twenty years ago as a publicity stunt, it became a serious activity of Pontiac High School. Mildred Todd, its first official president, eventually became a professional actress. A three-act comedy, Addie , was given a test performance for a large play publishing concern. Parents ' receptions, picnics, programs, theater parties and general interest in dramatics of the school are a few of the Playcrafters ' activities. W. N. The purpose of this organization is to have a group of especially trained voices to sing for various clubs, schools and other groups. The ensemble has grown from the original eighteen girls to twenty-three members. Carol Hopp and Peggy Jo Schroeder are the only remaining charter members of the group. Carol was the second manager. Peggy Jo is the present one. Their job is to work with the girls in planning programs and engagements. The group is under the direction of Mr. Arnold Bourziel. 56 CHOIR This year the Pontiac High School Choir is one of the hardest working groups in the vocal department. It rehearses diligently the first hour daily in room 127, under the direction of the department ' s instructor, Mr. Arnold Bourziel. The Choir averages between 45 and 55 members. The number of boys who have been able to elect this subject has been seriously cut because of war time demands, but this problem has been partially solved by incorporating the Boy ' s Glee Club into the tenor and bass sections of the Choir. Among the numerous appearances made by this group this year were the Annual Christmas Concert of December 19th; the Spring Concert, May 5th; the two Baccalaureate services; and programs given before the student body, local luncheon clubs, and other schools. One feature of the Spring Concert was a concertized version of Bizet ' s Opera, Carmen. In April the group enjoyed a production by the San Carlo Opera Company in the Masonic Auditorium, Detroit. This group broadcasts weekly programs from the studio adjacent to classroom 226 over a direct line to radio station WCAR. Student actors, as well as student announcers, sound effects men and er,g ; neers do the work. Some scripts are also written by students. During the current school year, two series of programs were broadcasted. The Magic Bookshelf is a series of dramatizations for lower elementary grades. These programs are adaptations of stories for children. The second series, Dedicated to Youth , is designed for upper elementary and junior high school grades. These programs aim to deepen the listener ' s appre- ciation of American ideals. 60 ■l iz 2L i_ FIRST SEMESTER Row I: Priscilla Colvin, Betty Dell, Flourine Sturman, Row 3 Betty Curry, Mr. C. All of these require unlimited rehearsals and individual practice on the part of the student. Loyalty of its members to traditions established by former P.H.S. bands has been the prime factor of the band ' s success as an organization, even though the band functions under difficulties, such as having the lOBs in the junior high schools. Also the fact that band members who have zero hour classes cannot attend rehearsals called in the morning. Regional and state contests require of the individual band member much concentration and knowledge of his instrument to obtain a rating of which to be proud. This is proved by the fact that many of the students who took part in the contests this year received Row I: Joan Harris, Martha Sisney, Peter Geiger, Helen Hale, Barbara Williams, Elizabeth Lanpher, Shir- ley Avadenka, Jeanne Bourdon, William Jones Row 2.- Orville Garner, Donald Gritzinger, Sally Gordon, Carolyn Palmer, Irving Schlyfestone, Eleanor Elerbe, Jack McCulloch, George Proven, William Brown, Melvin Krugman, Richard Rees, George Angleton, Gilbert Williams, Robert Pfeuffer, Julia Brown, Jean Carson, Marilyn Palmer, Betty Weller C2 ICHOOL BAND first divisions of which th e school, the band, and the indi- vidual band member can well be proud. The South Eastern Michigan band concert which was held in Birmingham, Michigan, was composed of musicians picked by a committee of leading band directors of this section of the state. The eminent director Leonard D. Falcone was selected as guest conductor and graciously accepted. The percentage of P.H.S. insturmentalists chosen to play in this The Pontiac High School Band concert which draws much interest as a civic affair has always been looked forward to as the rounding out and completion of the semester ' s work. These activities made a complete and satisfying sched- ule for the P.H.S. instrumentalist. Waterman KEEPING FIT Calisthenics is one of the most important activities in the girls ' gym classes. These athletic exercises give one a sense of coordination which promotes health, strength, and personality. However, calisthenics is of particular im- portance in a girl ' s education today because of the necessity of physical fit- ness. Whether a girl is planning to enter the armed services or engage in war work at home, she will find this training a great asset. 68 GIRLS ' BASKETBALL Girls ' basketball is an activity that brings forth a great deal of enthusiasm and spirit in the girls ' gym classes during the winter. Basketball technique is first developed through various activities, such as basketball, relays, drills, etc. Later, teams are formed within the individual classes, and each member is taught how to play the various positions. Then organized games are held between the teams within the class. Basketball is a sport that everyone enjo s, but it also has many personal values. For instance, it teaches leadership, agility, precision, and good sportsmanship. These qualities help the student to get along with people and to overcome any complex she might have. The girls pictured above are, left to right: Margaret Bishop, Kathryn Lindley, and Barbara Russell 69 ' GIRLS ' GYM ACTIVITIES Aside from the activities previously mentioned, there are additional ones in which girls participate. Part of the semester is spent in squad work. Squads are formed, and such games as ping pong, target throw, and shuffleboard are enjoyed. Dancing is also an important activity of the semester. Therefore, one day a week is set aside for this form of recreation in which the girls learn square, tap, and folk dancing. Later in the semester competitive games within the class are scheduled in basketball, volleyball, and softball. Thus the semester is brought to a close; however the good, as well as the enjoyment brought to each girl through this course, will remain with her forever. 70 BOY PORT : f rf « f f Row 7: B. Rayner, Mr. P. Allison Pontiac High School has finally done it by winning the Saginaw Valley Championship in football. Pontiac started the season like champions. They met a very good Royal Oak foot- ball team at Royal Oak. The two teams seemed evenly matched until Barnds, the flashy quarterback of Pontiac, faded back and threw a long pass to Blazor, who went over the goal line standing up. Weiss kicked the extra point, and the game was settled, seven to nothing in favor of Pontiac. The cocky chiefs then met defeat by a very fast and powerful Hazel Park eleven. However, the next week was different. The chiefs trounced Owosso by the score of thirty-eight to nothing. The chiefs ' play was ferocious; Barnds, Ford, Gilford, and Southworth clicked very well in the backfield, and in the line the stars were Lapides, Coxen, and Weiss. Pontiac seemed to be hitting her stride. They toppled Saginaw Eastern twenty to thirteen, largely through the efforts of Pontiac ' s great line. Bay City was next, and was defeated nine to nothing. Pontiac then met a good Saginaw Arthur Hill team led by an all state end, Dick Riffenberg. The chiefs, led by Barnds, Southworth, Weiss, and Coxen, trounced Saginaw twenty-one to seven. However, disaster loomed. Along came a powerful, once defeated, Flint Northern team. These rampaging Vikings defeated the Chiefs by the score of twenty-one to seven. The only bright spot in the game, as far as Pontiac was concerned, was the brilliant run of eighty-five yards by Fred Dennis. Pontiac came through, however, by beating Flint Central in a wild and rough game. Ford scored three touchdowns, and Weiss kicked two extra points. The final score was twenty to seven in favor of Pontiac. The following week Flint Central beat Flint Northern to give Pontiac the Saginaw Valley Championship. The victorious chiefs of Pontiac High School were seated at a table in front of a black velvet background on which were orange footballs bearing the names of the players of the team. The people in the crowd were there to pay honor to the champions of Saginaw Valley, and to begin a drive for a new football stadium at Wisner Field. A talk was given on the stadium by Goodloe Rogers. Silver footballs were given to the players and the Saginaw Valley trophy was presented to Captain Jack Weiss and Captain-elect Walter Southworth. Wally Weber, backfield coach at the University of Mich- igan, gave a talk in his own inimitable manner and afterwards showed pictures of the U. of M. Northwestern football game. Wasson The annual 10-A mixer sponsored by the Hi-Y and Girl Re- serves experienced its usual success this year. Decorations for this event were extremely attractive, the theme being that of a Halloween motif. Everyone enjoyed the favors of paper pumpkins which further carried out the Halloween spirit. Lively entertainment was afforded by the songs of Ann Meyers, Carol Hopp, and Barbara Yeager. The music was furnished by records played over the public address system. In addition, delicious refreshments of cider and doughnuts were served. Co-chairmen of this event were Barbara Yeager and Andrew Creswell. 95
