Guy Bevington, whom We have always held in highest esteem as our true friend and counselor. Mr. Bevington, for many years, has been a tireless Worker with the Hi-Y organization of the high school. His cheerful Contact and ever readiness to help all students has been a great inspiration for success. Our editor, Eleanor Anibal, and staff members have striven to make this edition one of which any one may well be proud. It has been our aim to make this book an authentic record of the 193 4 school year. Departing from the long-established custom of having a rectangular- shaped book, we decided to publish a square book this year. Another new feature is the placement of the pictures. 5 In September, 1933, the senior class elected Eleanor Anibal, editor-in- chief of the Quiverf' She selected the students who were to compose her staff, as follows: Betty Burns, assistant editor, Vfilhelmina Maytag, busi- ness manager, Gretchen Ossman and Christine Morrison, organization editors, Max Hodge,.art editor, Irene Wakeinaii and Myrtle Storm, january class editors, Mary Coulthurst and Katherine Sadler, june class editors, David jackson, photographic editor, Lucille Beach, preliminary pages editor, Arthur McAdams and Robert Travis, stayf assistants, and Esther Landsparger, Mary Ann Drogas, Nona Fraser, Leona Walls, typists. Mr. George L. Clark was the faculty adviser. Through the cooperation of the four administrative heads, our school is a leader in educational circles. The growth of the school system has been very marked. In 1 92 I the size of Pontiac High School was 989 students and fifty-one teachers. Since that time the number enrolled has increased until this year we have 2,118 enrolled, an increase of I,o98. The number of teachers has also increased but hardly in proportion with the increase in the student body. At present there are sixty-six teachers. The school built in the shape of an H, contains sixty-two completely furnished reci- tation rooms, three session rooms, a large auditorium, two gymnasiums, a swimming pool, and a fine library. Scholastically, Pontiac is rated very high. Our school offers a complete preparatory course for almost any held. The senior class wishes to thank these leaders for the personal touch they have given to us in the performance of their duties. U M R . J A M E s H . F L o R E N c E B R 0 A D , whose gentle presence ever embodied the finer things of life, passed away August zo, 1933, after a brief illness. Whether she was ministering to the needs of one seeking some abstruse fact in an unexplored Held or administering some little detail of everyday routine in the library, Mrs. Broad possessed that calm and kindly manner so rare and so much to be desired in this busy world. For the past twenty years she served our library and to her foresight and care, we, of Pontiac High, owe much. Everything is grist that comes to our mill, ever shall remind us of Mrs. Broad and the masrerly way in which she assembled helpful and varied material in useful order. Our splendid clipping-file is largely the result of many years of winnowing valuable articles from whatever material was available. This was only one of Mrs. Broad's achievements but it was a service dear to her. The clipping-Hle stands now as a fitting monument to her whose memory we cherish. R A N s o M E . H A Z E L T o N , who was granted a leave of absence from Pontiac High School in the fall of I932 because of ill health, passed away in the University Hospital, Ann A Arbor, October 14, 1933. Mr. Hazelton was born on a farm near Washington, Michigan, September 14, 1875. l if For several years he taught in Macomb county schools. Upon his graduation from the University of Michigan, he became superintendent of schools first in Clinton and later in Marine City. In 1 91 8 he came to Pontiac. Here he served for twelve years as business manager of the school system and then became an instructor in the commercial department of the high school. Mr. Hazelton always took an active interest in civic affairs wherever he might be located. In Pontiac he has been actively identified with many civic enterprises, among which are the My. Rg7750117, E, Hazglfofg Y. M. C. A., Community Chest, and Kiwanis club of which he was a charter member. He also belonged to the Masonic order and the First Congregational church. 5 I 3 1 N' the hner things of V'0rid, 1? of Ponriae in-iigifggi Mrs. Broad and the f Our Splendid b . mm Whatever h ut it was a service er whose memory We bsence from Pontiac High University Hospital, Ann ear Washington, Michigan, his raduarion from the n g I in Clinron and later in usiness manager of the school ' hool nr of rheh1ghSC 1' md, :refer he mlghf be Oc which are the risfii Wong I a charter member. Among the activities during the Sophomore year, the Sophomore April Fool dance, with Bill Cash, general chairman, will long be remembered. Bob Goebel, our class president, has led the class successfully through the last year of school, with the capable help of Jack Newman, vice-president, Robert Owen, secretary: and Hudson Hill, treasurer. The most colorful event of our Senior year was the Senior Prom, with Bill Cash acting as general chairman: Mary Coulthurst and Gary Stagg, chairmen of deco- rations, XY'illiam Powell, orchestra chairman, Max Hodge, tickets and publicity, Florence Burdette, programs and refreshments, Ruth Merz, invitations, Jack Roberts, entertainment, Keith Reily, cleanup and Tony Pietz, checking. The dance was held May Il, in the Girls' gym. Class day was held at a popular country club, at which the class had a memor- able time in outdoor sports, and dancing. For those who successfully passed their senior examinations, skip day was an added spice to our senior events. Baccalau- reate service and commencement concluded our career in Pontiac High School. First Semester Student Council HE Student Council is a student governing organization, composed of representatives from the various home rooms of the high school. The aim of this organization is to promote school spirit and to discuss questions of interest and importance to the student body as a Whole. Each representative makes an account of the happenings at each meeting and takes a report back to his home room. The first meeting of the Student Council for the first semester of 1933 took place on October 3, at which time officers were elected. Robert Goebel was elected president, Jane Prosser, vice-president, Mary Coulthurst, secretary, and John Brown, treasurer. As it is the duty of the president of the Student Council to appoint members to serve on the Assembly Committee, Robert Goebel appointed Bill Cash and Caroline Smith. Throughout the semester the council sponsored several matinee dances. The council did much to improve the conduct in the halls and also aided in publishing the school handbook. Second Semester Student Council H E second semester Student Council under the leadership of Mr. C. Covert, generously contributed to the Community Chest Fund of this city in their annual drive. One of the most discussed topics during the semester, was the relieving of con- gestion in the halls. It was believed that we might do away with the boys and girls stairways to aid this problem. However, a majority of the students were not in favor of the change. The Student Council developed a new method of presenting business. An execu- tive council was elected consisting of two seniors, two juniors and one sophomore, to decide before hand how to present problems. This plan was carried out in order to save time and to present the problem clearly and concisely. Members of this Committee are: Frank Steere, Roy Lewis, Robert Cappel, E. C. Conwell and Bob Reeves. - The officers for the second semester were as follows: president, james Glennie, vice-president, Robert Cappelg secretary, Nancy Browng treasurer, Roy Lewisg sergeant-at-arms, Lee Bauer. For many months, there was a rumor that no year book would be published due to the financial situation. However, the seniors finally agreed to pay assessments and thereby make up the deficit. As sufficient funds were not raised, the photographers of the city contributed to the Quiver fund, thus making publication possible. We wish to express our thanks to them for their contribution to our year book. In September, I933, the senior class elected Eleanor Anibal editor-in-chief of the Quiver, The students who composed the Quiver staff were as follows: Betty Burns, assistant editor, Wilhelmina Maytag, business manager, Gretchen Ossman and Christine Morrison, organization editors, Max Hodge, art editor, Mary Coulthurst and Katherine Sadler, June class editors, Irene Wakeman and Myrtle Storm, January class editors, Lucile Beach, preliminary pages editor, David Jackson, photographic editor, Robert Owen, sports editor, Dorothy Thurston, feature editor, Esther Landsparger, Mary Ann Drogas, Leona Walls, Nona Fraser, typists, Arthur McAdams and Robert Travis, staff assistants, Mr. George L. WELDEN Pontiac High students were dealt a severe blow last January when Mr. Charles D. Welden an- nounced that he was leaving our school in April to enter into busniess. Welden had been varsity basketball and football coach here for seven years and had developed many successful teams. His record is very impressive considering that his teams won eighty-five per cent of their contests. 9 KLINE B. HARTIVIAN Mr. Kline B. Hartman who has coached the Varsity swimming teams for seven years has be- come recognized as one of the leading coaches of swimming in the state. During the past season his swimming team produced an enviable record of winning all their meets. As baseball coach, he has developed many teams of championship caliber. Under his guidance, the Reserve football teams have established commendable records. 0 HARVEY NORRIS Coach Harvey Norris is given credit for turning out many successful track teams as well as several track stars since he has been in Pontiac High School. Norris also coaches the third foot- ball squad where most of the outstanding players of the Varsity teams have received their start. Pontiac can be proud of such a record as well as that established by the Reserve basketball teams that Coach Norris has given to Pontiac High. ' HERMAN OTTO Pontiac High for many years has had exceptionally good golf teams. Mr. Herman Otto is the coach of this sport. Last year the Pontiac team won the championship of the Saginaw Val- ley League. Much credit is due Hermie for coaching the golf team as he does so only because of his enthusiasm for golf and his interest in developing winning golf teams for our school. The first encounter, which was with the tradi- tional foe, Mount Clemens, ended with the defeat of Pontiac. The Chief's next came to conflict with Royal Oak and from them gained their only victory of the season. The team then confronted Flint Central's ball carriers and again were unsuccessful in winning from their QL Jlvl-I opponent. In the succeeding four games with Flint Northern, Saginaw Eastern, Owosso, and Port Huron, Pontiac High was well represented by its team, but was forced to surrender all the games to their rivals. Under the guidance of Mr. Charles Dink', Welden several com- mendable players were developed. Spec- tacular among them were Floyd Red,' Foster and Roland Corr, in the backfield, and Lacy Schiefler, lineman. Foster and Corr will have an opportunity to return next season and again display their fine football ability. They won the first five games against strong opponents. Then they lost seven consecutive games before breaking into the winning column again. The team was weakened considerably by the loss of Townsend Tapley in Janu- ary. Tapley proved to be the spark of the team and was also the key man on the offense. His loss was keenly felt. The vacancy left by Tapley was shared be- tween Yeager and Lacey Schiefler. Hiltz was another outstanding player, being a clever ball handler and the leading scorer CQL JIXXI-I of the team. Hilcz and Tapley shared the captaincy and both proved to be cap- able leaders. Bill Hill and Carl Alfsen were promoted to the first team late in the season and both saw considerable action. The chiefs Hnished the season with seven wins and nine losses and finished in fourth place in the. Saginaw Valley League. They qualified for the regional tournament but were eliminated in their first game by our ancient rival, Royal Oak. Fortunately Hilrz is the only regu- lar to be lost by graduationg so with the material developed on the reserve squad, we should have a very good team next season. l l I ' Boslce UR Resericsrng.,.if,j 53, gs - successful seam Mir? ance of coach Norm. gm . games incl loszng fm Thi V, T to d ' i, x cleat the merits wt Sr , . nliurH1ll.lingm.- gem.. d s Bai 3 . 1 n SQSHHW Eastern, l I The li h neup that sum :ik W Olv . The only teams to defeat the reserves were Saginaw Arthur Hill, Lansing Central, Bay City, and Saginaw Eastern. The lineup that started the majority of games was: Alfsen and Broadnax, for- wards: Bowers, center: and Stafford and Hill at the guards. These players proved that with their experience they will be excellent material for the varsity next season. Hill and Alfsen developed so rapidly that they were promoted to the first team late in the season. Alfsen be- came a regular and while he played proved to be the best scorer on the team. Hill also saw considerable action. Charles Marion and Robert Quance took over the positions left by Hill and Alfsen, and both proved to be capable substitutes. XVith this material, the re- serves should be as strong next season as they have been this year. R E S U L T S Dec. 22-Flint Northern.. jan. Baseball O N T I A C had a very powerful baseball aggregation in 1933. The team was developed from a large number of veterans, and coached by Mr. Kline Hartman. The suc- cess of the team can be traced to consistent hitting and the brilliant pitching of Bauer, and Clark. Pontiac was weakened considerably for the 1934 cam- paign by the loss of Bauer, Clark, Tapley, and Taylor. Some of the veterans returning from 1933 to build the 1934 team were Oxley, Owen, Schiefler, Horst, Glennie and Pietz.
