T IS Very intCI'CStlllg' tu move from a high school in one part of the United'States to one in another, and note the differences in the Syetenlg, sessions and regulations. A very good illustration is ghgyyyia in this story of a girl who changed from her high school, nearly llalf a centul'v old, in the lniddle west, to an almost new one in Brook- line, Massachusetts, which is just twenty minutes ride from Boston. l will let her tell her own story. l had to start as a freshman again, though l had passed one semes- ter at home. hecause there are no promotions during the middle of the vear, even though there are mid-year and tinal examinations. The building is just as unadorned as Zlllj' huildlng could he: low, broad, with wings on each side and in the rear, and commonly called hy the students, the tack factory. lts front entrance is reached bv a long' flight of llroad steps, up wllich twelve persons mav walk abreast. The hrst thing one does on entering the school, is to decide what course to take: Classical, Suh-fflassical, Technical, Cieneral, or Coin- inercial. Then it is necessary to make a copy of the printed program handed to you. lt is divided into thirty. forty-minute periods, six each day: and at least twenty recitations a week are required. These come at irregular intervals, for, since one carries seven or eight suhjects, it is necessary to drop some one day, and take others. These programs are followed the entire year. The hooks are then received from the teachers ofthe suhjects, and a card is nlled out hy the student, with name. date, teacher, name ol l'-ook, and condition. There is only one session, from eight-thirty to one-thirty: with recess for luncheon from eleven-lourty to twelve. Une very good rule ahout the luncheon is that it may he eaten in the hasenient, or out of doors, hut nowhere in the huilding. ahove the top hasement step, must a student he seen with an open lunch hox. There are gongs in each hall, set to ring with the clock hy elec- tricity, which mark the time for the passing lil the classes. XYhen the gong rings in the morning. and after recess, all hooks for the following classes must he taken on leaving the room, and no return made to it until the recess or closing hell rings, or class or study take you hacl: there. Un Monday, Tuesday, and Friday, we form in couples and march into chapel hall to exercises which on Monday and Tuesday are fol- lowed hy a singing lesson, and Friday hy special exercises. usually an address, often hy one of our own teachers. Un XYednesday and Thurs- day, the Bible reading and Lord's Prayer are led hy the session-room teacher. It is very hard work to skip school hecause such strict rules are maintained. During the second hour slips of the ahsentees. typewritten hy Miss Russell, the secretary, are passed out to the teachers, and if any students are not accounted for, their names are sent to Miss Rus- sell, who looks them up. lf you go to the lihrary, a printed slip is filled out, and one-half given to the study-room teacher and the other to Miss Russell. If you go to a teacher's room, a permit must he oh- tained from her. Of the different studies, the lirst year ol' gymnasium, French, Iinglish, Mathematics, and iirst year of drawing and history are re- quired in all the courses, Connected with the High School are the large manual training .1511 - THE QUIVER 1 , ll 1 1 11,1 11111 1?L1l1f1ll1, juxt hmqef I 1 1 1 11 Lllgi. g1111111K1u111 11.111 and 11 smd r L 1 N L L 1 UL fl There ls X111 L Y m '1 1 1 S Ll 11111t1 Swuetx NL111111' SQLIH IIIL S1111 111 L 1 x N N K NHT Xuan-1 x KX 111 ll X llTl XX I l Nllek I 1 1 L11 1 . An- other which I did not escape was heing' taken to police headcpiarters to he registered. Name, birthplace, and age of all strangers coming to the city a1'e recorded. This must he done as often as a person moves from one abode to another. My life in l'ostdamer Strasse was exceedingly pleasant. As it was summer, l was the only roomer in the pension much of the time and so was received into the charming' little tierman family. The family consisted of Frau Droll, her three small children, and her sister, Fraulein Lutig. No hostess could have heen kinder In a guest than these two sisters were to me. Une or the other always stood ready to take me sight-seeing, shopping, or on pleasure trips. Un their frequent excursions and picnics for the children, they always included me and they never seemed too husy to take an interest in my work. I spent many a delightful hour in the Tiergarten. the largest and most attractive park of Berlin. It covers six hundred and thirty acres and is the property of the crown. Until the reign of King Frederick the First it was a deer park. The trees are gigantic and the whole park in dotted with statues and monuments to royalty and famous men and women. Among the hest are monuments to Queen Louise, Goethe, Yvagner, and l,essing. The Sieges-Allee, or .Xvenue of victory, which skirts one side of the Tiergarten, is unique. ln a background of lieau- tiful trees are placed at equal intervals, on each side of the avenue, mon- uments ciimmeniorating l russian victories. The effect is charming' as one drives down the avenue. The Zoological Garden was an unfailing' source of amusement. The collection of animals there emhraces ahout thirteen hundred different kinds. llowever, the people were more interesting' to me than the animals. livery afternoon, the stolid-looking' Germans assemhled there liy the hundreds with their wives and children, seated themselves com- fiirtahly, quietly drank their heer, and listened to the inspiring' music. In writing' of Berlin, it would he unjust not to mention the great palace of Sansouci, huilt hy Frederick the Great at l'otsdam. At the entrance of the park in front of the palace stands a magnificent fountain in hich throws its stream one hundred and thirty feet into the air. There are twelve figures surrounding the hasin, including' those of Nlercury and Yenus. From this spot ascends a broad Hight of steps sixty-six feet in height, which is intersected hy six terraces. The palace itself is only one story high. Frederick's rooms are preserved almost as they were during his life. Yisitors are shown X'oltaire's room, the dining room, audience hall, concert room, as well as Frederick's apartment, the li- hrary. and picture gallery. The terraced g'arden with its clipped trees is in exact imitation of the garden at Yersailles, This is the place of all others near Berlin where one dreams of the Last and wonders at the greatness of the man whose work survives him, not onlv here lmut in the great German lfmpire of today. It is he of whom Napolean said a few decades later, while standing hy the lead coffin of the great leader, lf this one were alive, l should not now he here. 40 THE -'QUIVERH L r fl? Again they proved tu be more than a match for our girls, who seemed to haye an exceptionally had night, being beaten by the large score of 24 to Ii. The next Friday the girls niore than reversed this score on the Holly maids, defeating them 26 to 2. The Holly team would probably be able to make a showing against Farmington, as they appear to be in the same elass. This is partly proven by the second game between Pontiac and Farmington. The imal score was 25 to 9, which gave our girls a total of 49 points tu Farmington? II in the two contests. The next game scheduled was with the girls from River Rouge. This team had been playing great ball and a good game was expected. This it turned out to be, as it ' A U t favor one and then the i n even match throughout hrst seeming o was a f , , other, but neither gaining anything like a lead. In the last moments of the game, our girls forged ahead by one point and it was this lead that won the game for us. The Final score was IO to 9. Unly the closing game remained, and this was to be played the following Fri- day. The opponents were the girls from 4 Jwosso, who had beaten some of the best teams in the State, and who came here prepared to win, The first half of the game ended 4 to 3, in their favor, but, in the closing iound, our girls continually worked the ball under the basket, when the Misses Bennett and Taft countd up the scores. The final score was IO to 6, which ended a most successful season, with a total of six won and two lost. The stars of the girls' team were as follows: Captain, Miss Edwardsg Misses Crnhn and Keyser, guardsg the Misses Hanson, Farrar and Ross, centers, the Misses Bennett, Taft and lvelch, forwards. Tl1is was pretty good. considering the teams played. TWO of these defeats were given us by tl1e Reserves of XVestern High by the scores of I5-IO and IQ-IZ. Both games were well played and were ex- citing contests, but the lYesterners, who, by popular opinion, we1'e equal tr, the first team of that school, were slightly the better of us. The 1-ther defeats were hy Vass High, 23-17: Press-Gazettes, 16-11, Central Reserves. 20-1 1 3 and IJ, Lf. S., 14-12. Cass played the first team of that scliool and they were g1'eatly our superior, both in height and Weight, uhich fact, more than a11ytl1i11g else, brought them the victory. The game was really ours until tl1e last few moments when Vreelancl. their forward, counted up the winning points. The Press-Gazettes won on the foul shooting of lieorge llubbard, who scored fourteen of the points frmn the foul line. The many fouls were the result of the differences in age, size, weight, and methods uf playing, which all favored the P. G. boys. The Centralites defeated us on our home floor in a fast and rough contest. This only evened up matters, as we defeated them earlier in the season on their home fl111i11 In the second game they put a different and better team in the field, Tl1e last defeat, which was from D. U. S., I4-12, came the next evening after the Central game and again proved that a team can not play two-hand contests in two successive evenings. Our victories were over Farmington High, hrst team, 27-20, Central Reserves, 11-8. which was mentioned above, Higgins High, two games, .14-S and 29-2, and D. Lf S., .23-I 1. Farmington High was a hard-fought victory, with our team putting up the better game at all stages. The two victories over lliggins High plainly showed that they were not in ll at all. XVC clearly outclassed them in both contests. The other vic- tory over IJ. U. S. was by the large seore tif .23-ll 3 a11d, though they played a line game, they could make no showing against our boys. This game was one of the seas1in's best. The second team squad were as follows: Capt, P1-4111! XVOCK1 and Todd, guards, ll'atson and C1 iteher, eenter: l,. Smith and F. XValls, for- wards. Hut of this squad, live, Xlkiorl, Todd, Kutcher, lVatson and Smith, will l'6tlll'll to start the season next year, lironi this fact you see that we have prospects for another successful year lwith the coming of the New llighl. l The best wishes uf all the graduatiiig players is that the New High Ill its history may bring forth as goofl teams as has the Old Pontiac High. 4.
