Everything 's coming up Rain bows .' .' .' I t seems this year should have been called the year of the rainbow. Everything was coming up rainbows, from Ziggy and his nets to 'Cheer all temperature and its commercials. The rain- bows were used in making learning more fun, advertising seem at its best, and get well cards brighter. Even tooth paste entered into the rain- bow scene, as Aqua-fresh added a red stripe to the green and white. It was the year the world built and destroyed dreams. The year we wished on beginnings, and prayed for endings. It was the year the world cried for peace, and reached out for God. All and all it was a year to be remembered. Through it all the sun peeped out showing the path to the rainbows. But Who, and Why? Ronald and Nancy Reagan set the pace. The dream to cut the national deficit from 100 billion to 75 billion dollars over a period of four years was the first not to mention Awac's , the radar planes sold to the Saudi Arabians to strengthen our relations. The world also saw dreams come true as Lady Diane became Prince Charles' wife on July 29, 1981. With her glass couch and diamond ring, it made it poss' e ' V in Ci ' Achievement 0 mankind and The Space shxp Columbla on lf.S second fhght Disast The spaceship Columbia was also a dream when it soared for a second time in October and returned safely five days later. This made the astronauts heros, and put a sense of achievement back into man- kind. There were also nightmares. We sat on pins and needles as General Dozier was kidnapped before Christmas by the Red Brigade, and gave a sigh of re- lief when the Italian police found him 42 days later. We have cried many times for people who crossed this world's rainbow to climb the stairway to heaven. People like Natalie Wood, an actress, sex symbol, mother. and legend in her own time, drowned on Nov. 28, near her boat in California. Paul Lynn. one ofAmerica's famous comedians also died on Jan. li. 1982. Tomorrows threat. l Air traffic at a disadvantage- Anwar Sadat, Egypt's Prime Minister, who stood for peace, was also brutally assas- sinated on Oct. 6, 1981. From good to bad the world has seen it all and yet there Ls always hope. Hope we gained as Pope, John Paul II, sent his message to his native land, Poland. The land where Marshall law took over in mid-December and tried to root out Solidar- ity and its movements. We saw hope, and faith at its strongest when Bobby Sands stood up for the I.R.A. tlrish Republic Associa- tionl. In doing so, he starved himself and finally died because of his beliefs. We've also seen other problems. Problems in the sky, on the fields, around the car in- dustry, and in tomorrow. Many watched as the air traffic control personnel walked off their jobs on June 22, in demand of more money leaving air traffic at a big disadvan- tage. We Need Team Work ' . if .I. l Outlawed handguns. We also sau' the baseball teams across the nation strike, on June 12, due to more money. We watched how Atlanta out- lawed hand guns because of their threat to society, and noted that cars were not selling due to the overstocked car lots and the companies lay offofa large number of workers. Then we took a look at tomorrow. We sau' that tomorrow there may not be enough gas for the new diesel cars, no work to pay for this gas, and no security in retiring. But with all ofthis we still find rainbows we still have our hopes. Hart to Hart. and Jl.A.S.H. home entertainment was still a favorite. Many times this was the only sou ree of entertainment. But television has its great ' times. Television, being what it is, also took the opposite side. Sports were just as important. The place was chosen, the teams were narrowed, the bets were placed and the game was played. There were parties, practices, and populations that the T. V. crews from across the nation captured. Within hours, history was made in Pontiac as the San Francisco forty-niners defeated the Cincinnati Bengals, in the 16th national Super Bowl. The city, the people, even their spirit came alive, from Burbon Street North, the action place down town, to our very own Super Silver Dome . Pontiac, for a brief week, was widely talked about. It was quite an experience. The Super Bowl boosted the city's moral, and made it a bit prouder of what it Ls. Still it can't be forgotten that Pontiac has had its problems. Problems that will remain in the minds of many students, especially seniors. The year started with no sports, no activities, and no library. It was felt from grades K-12 as funds cut books, paper, and other necessary supplies. Teaching had taken a giant step backward. There were no projectors to be watched, and no tape recorders to be listened to. Teachers couldn't assign any type of research due to closed libraries. Still, school went on. Northern's students were in an uproar. With a top grade basketball team, and a super wrestling team, not to mention the six valedictorians just the year before, how could this happen? Well it did happen, but not without a fight!! Northern's faculty, student body, and a few coaches assembled at the board meeting with 900 signatures pleading for sports, and a library. Both were denied. To prove we were still strong, Northern held their annual Homecoming. There were no floats, no parties, not even a regular game. Still we had to show we were brave. We put on our Homecoming in a unique way. The clases challenged each other in various games including football. Spirit was at an all time high. Over 314 ofthe school participated in the traditional spirit week. Then came thatactual day when the King and Queen were crowned. For one short hour Northern was happy. Still the worst was still to come, Reality soon made its come back. In full force. v,, , it 3,-. -.foe-I' e .,. This was why there were so many outs, and the biggest was yet to come. Schools would close on De- cember 9th. This di.fn't set right at all. Sports. and LiLn rry's were just ext'ra's, nice extra's. But they needed school, just like we ner-ded school. This took more than ust a fight, this tool: team work. People like Dr. Dauw, Mrs. Swanson, Mr. Wilcox, Mr. Buller, and Dr. Boyce, they had all fought their last battle for Northern before they retired. This just didn't seem right, but like the brave rainbow we faded tomorrow and found it held new people like Mr. Duffy and Dr. Taylor. All and all, it wasn't such a bad year. In fact it had some good points. Northern opened up its library second semester, picked up another counselor, and was on its way to recovery. They planned a donkey basketball game, yet the hurt of no real games was present. But school had its free days. God dumped Michigan with 20 inches of white, fluffy, snow over a period of six days. This made one of our five day week into an extra three day vacation. Looking back, everything had its dreams, this year included. Everything was on the move, either up or down, but everything was moving. The year will be remembered by Northern as the year of the rainbow .
