- H i l 'Q YWMRWWIHWWWM -- 5113 The Year That Almost Wasn 't The failure of the millage in June was a tremendous bbw to Pontiac schools. Students started transferring to other school Systems as the rumor 'WO EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES was confirmed. Nobody thought the Board of Education would actually carry through their threat We were wrong School started in September with the exception of all extracurricular activities, some counselors and teachers. The school year at Northern wasn 't looking to good Everything seemed to quiet: No band marching in the hall, no 15 minute long announcements, announcing scores or the new cheerleaders, to interrupt your 3rd hour teachers boring lecture, and no sound of running feet as the cross country team practice in the halls. Everything seemed so plain: No posters all over the walls - telling who the best candidate for homecoming court is, no special events filling up the calendar by the main office, and no lockers filled with batons, uniforms and red di white P011-poms Alas, Northern was dull very dull You were at school from 7:45 till 12:50. You d1dn't stay after lunless you were in troublel Students were bored and mad On one occasion there was a student walk-out protesting the millage. The more progressive students got involved in a rally with students from Central to try to push the upcoming November millage election. Students even sent their opinions to the Oakland press to be published in the Voice of the People. But even that didn 't help. The millage was downed once again in Novemben In November I the day after the millage defeatj a man by the name of George Schipper put together a fund raiser called Pontiac Student Booster Fund. This was a fimd made UP of contributions from local businesses, clubs and concemed citizens At least once a week the Oakland Press listed some of the contributions and the amount collected. The Pontiac Student Booster Fund collected enough money to put High School sports and activities back into the schools. Alas not only do the students of PN IL S. care but so do the citizens ofPont1ac And only through the support are we the Pontiac Avalanche Staff able to present to ou The Year That Ahnost Wasn t l ug , .D .0 r ' , y r i 6 fi f
