Students started transferring to other school Systems as the rumor 'WO EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES was confirmed. Nobody thought the Board of Education would actually carry through their threat We were wrong School started in September with the exception of all extracurricular activities, some counselors and teachers. The school year at Northern wasn 't looking to good Everything seemed to quiet: No band marching in the hall, no 15 minute long announcements, announcing scores or the new cheerleaders, to interrupt your 3rd hour teachers boring lecture, and no sound of running feet as the cross country team practice in the halls. Everything seemed so plain: No posters all over the walls - telling who the best candidate for homecoming court is, no special events filling up the calendar by the main office, and no lockers filled with batons, uniforms and red di white P011-poms Alas, Northern was dull very dull You were at school from 7:45 till 12:50. You d1dn't stay after lunless you were in troublel Students were bored and mad On one occasion there was a student walk-out protesting the millage. The more progressive students got involved in a rally with students from Central to try to push the upcoming November millage election. Students even sent their opinions to the Oakland press to be published in the Voice of the People. But even that didn 't help. The millage was downed once again in Novemben In November I the day after the millage defeatj a man by the name of George Schipper put together a fund raiser called Pontiac Student Booster Fund. This was a fimd made UP of contributions from local businesses, clubs and concemed citizens At least once a week the Oakland Press listed some of the contributions and the amount collected. The Pontiac Student Booster Fund collected enough money to put High School sports and activities back into the schools. Alas not only do the students of PN IL S. care but so do the citizens ofPont1ac And only through the support are we the Pontiac Avalanche Staff able to present to ou The Year That Ahnost Wasn t l ug , .D .0 r ' , y r i 6 fi f 1E'::Lmw hd.i.LMl..nLlW.i..l.lL xii-xl-L1 SECONDARY cms Q51 6,2 P: NO REMEDIAL ,Q 3 1- Mosr LIBRARYR:gF?x:JiS 4, ,4 fe N0 SPORTS O .ow ,gr NO DEBATE TEAM 5' -9 .7 SSSZESSNSELORS A ANCED C 0 ,gb 5 NO AFTER sc:-nool LASSES .5 ,v A NO FIELD TRIPS 5' o 0 NO CAMPING RROGRAMS fs Q 0 fe 3 f ,fl .EILJ Q 27' g JACK NO CHOIR ACTIVITIE 5 NO BAND S tax nhappy even 'sign Q fu .5 5 ,S 5- The immedlate ixnpacggvyin were cast. but ' N m9'I'Zjt'g H of some 400 the ga mes WI? ind Sobeit. Although our homecoming floats were absent, the spirit was still there as Northern flew ahead of Walled Lake Central with a big homecoming win. PNHS even had the traditional selling of homecoming flowers, presented on the day of coronation, with one slight difference - this year the National Honor Society sold carnations instead of mums. All in all, PNHS 's homecoming was as special as ever. Even the millage can 't defeat Huskies. I. Here we have the girl Court and Queen assembling for the last touch-up. Some are bought and some are made, but they all seem to Ht in somewhere at Northern, Although new fashions are made everjv year, some of last years fashions still linger on. Gloria Vanderbilt jeans were one of the biggest items. Skirts and dresses were worn more this year than any year since they started allowing pants. Tshirts are still big with the guys and the girls are wearing blouses with ties. Feathered hair is still the big thing in hain Girls are wearing their hair longer and guys are wearing theirs shorter, When it comes to hair people seem to stay with what Hts them best. A fros and straight long hair are still big, No matter what fashion they choose, they still try and look their best. .Q wizlgm .h.h..LM.L..llLllHL.UL nrsrmrrmwmmmum 1 pm, -ww arm'-f:v'- w 'v - 1 i 614 ,--M' 1 N l - 1 MYffll'i'IF,I mmf,mulrr.zxnf1'm1sxmm.p:1.aw wil, fg' ' 'fgvif?5,' fi' ' x Mfr .4.i:Ef.. 2,-V4 ,f - f . 1,5167-8, .-.. This years homecoming was unique in two ways. The first of them being that it took place during basketball instead of football As everyone knows the millage didn't pass this year and the school cut many fall sports and activities. Football and homecoming were among those. The principles decided to give us a homecoming with basketball when basketball was restored with the rest of the winter sports and activities. This helped to keep school spirit up. The second being there was a tie for homecoming court. This is a first for Pontiac Northern. Instead of breaking the tie we had two senior courts. The 1980 Homecoming Court is King and Queen: Damon Blakemore and Karen Mack, Senior Court: Paul Chilkott and Kathy Prince, Barry Nichols and Lisa Deleon, Junior Court: David Burnett and Jackie Payton, Sophomore Court: Sylvester Giles and Tammy Armstrong, Freshman Court: Tony Dudley and Kimberly Hatter, -. .... . , .tt.t:4n.w.i.LLu,.Jxnlnllu.lAL - li lI -- A- ! r t ,. Swimming in January! This sounds unusual to most of us, but, to the members of the Pontiac Northern Swim Team it is a daily routine. The members of the team consist of both guys and girls all working toward a common goal and hoping that in the long run they will come out on top. The members of this team are truly dedicated, they spend several hours a day working out both in and out of the pool However, swimming to these students is not just a sport, it is a hobby and to many a means of leisure. We have an outstanding team and can be proud of them Keep up the good work. 1. The Swim Team are from left to right: row 1, Laurie France, Julie Moore, Tina Schnieder, Christina Baker, Mary Wertz, Becky Willis, and Patricia Martinez. Row 25 Alex Hiller fdiving coachj, Dale Maline, Scott Doherty, Montgomery Baker, David Sabins, Paul Chilkott, and Ann Mckinney lswim coachj, Row 35 Larry Harmon, Jeff Singles, Jeff Coon, John Good, Myron Moore, and Larry Parks 2. Every sport that took place here at Northern was at a disadvantage this year, on account of the unpassed millages, and Volleyball was no exception. Because of the teams' late start they had to play against whatever school was available at the time. However, these inconviences did r'l0t stop the high spirits and the enthusiasm of the team. 1. Fore! No, this is not the answer to yesterdays algebra problem, however, it is a common saying on the golf course. The girls golf team consist of eight girls who, not only think of golf as a hobby but prefer to play it competitively. This team spends a great amount of their leisure time on the greens of the course. The girls golf team has that kind of Huskie pride that makes them somewhat special We hope to see most of these golfers returning next year. The best of luck to you in years to come. 1. Many important decisions, that effect our lives, are made by this staff The Central Executive Staff is made up of a group of experienced, knowledgable people who are interested in the education of todays youths. Though many of us thought that running a school system would be extremely easy, after facing the problems in the past year, we can conclude that it takes a lot more than just sitting around to get the job done right. These people have worked diligently throughout this past year to work out the difficulties we have had, and have proven to be the great leaders that our school system needs.
