Northern 's own little world had its own shoi'ker's' The birth ofthe 'New Llerieration' had new episoiles added to its llistorv. The suicide in the parking lot, the death ofa kllow student, the initiation into ROI? and the teacher strike that added to our vacation and the Silverdorne games added spice to the life of we students. The world revolved around its own events that interlaced with ours. The 'Disco Fever' ran high in our veins wlzen John Travolta burned across local movie theaters. Senator Diggs rocked the political world with lzis conviction in the Courts. Louise Brown, the worlds first test-tube baby brought to sterile parents the gft of life and brought to kids plastic test-tube parents as tlze future in BRAVE NEW WORLDl?l The Sci-Fi era zoomed us to the outer regencies of the galaxy with T V programs such as 'Battlestar Galactica and Mork-n-Mindmff Marriages among the T V personalities we viewed took us by surprise, tying the knot were Donny Osmond Charlie's Angels and Princes Caroline of Monaco! The black heritage was once again lzailed and glorified with the T K premiere of 'Roots 2: The Next Generations , On the Sports Arena, Leon Spinks surprised the Nation wherz he heat The Greatest for the WBA. title. On a more local level, Proposal D. Came into effect denying all those turning eighteen-Seniors of RNH a toast to adulthood! The Wiz , the black renzake of the childhood story we grew up on l The Wizard of Oz J told the story in the upbeat way that we face to the 80'sl But the bad happened with the good - that's LIFE! The death of the popular crusader llubert Humphrey touched the hearts of many wlzen he succumbed to cancer. The Duke however once again won his battle witl1 cancer. The worst airborn collision in US. history occurred in San Diego with the crash that took mimy lives. Natalie Cole the singing star, was honored when she received her llollywood 'Star', as her father Nat Cole did years ago. The year has been mam y things to many people the good and the bad, one more memory to add to our numbered years at Northern to face the impending ElGllTIIz'S new, unique, and puzzling to our Generation... A wwf' Av VH- :ef 1. 4 fin 5321 X 8 l -ll is 4'-v K Aff' i - a 1--ang' 'H Ni-!'H The Ezgh ties are approaching - and with this new decade the students of Northern High come of age! As we see the Seventies fade into the sunset, giving wav to the dawning of the Eighties, the Avalanche takes a look at thc New Generation. The many generations that have preceded us, have had a great influence on the people we are and will become. On looking at the growing years of the Huskies, who range in age from I4 to 18, we see 'Our Roots. ' We have grown up as the direct result of the fighting for and against various issues of life. Although we were not 'around ' during the Happy Days of the 50's KRNH was - with its very first graduating class j this time of nostalgic innocence holds a special place in our hearts. Today 's styles have the 50 's look blended in. The ever-popular Sock-Hops that really socked the Greasers, have been replaced with the Boogie-Beat of Disco Fever. At our very young and tender age the Turbulent 60's exploded The 'Me Generation of I-hppies, the assassinations of well-known figures, the Civil Rights Struggle, the Sit-Down age of protest and other rebellious stages, have passed by us with a great effect on the lives we lead today and all other tomorrows... RNH of course was hanging right in there! About ten years ago a sit-down strike took place over the Dress Code fDress Code!?!j Today, we dress in a sefexpressive way, projecting a very sharp attractive personal appearance! Ah .. the Seventies! ERA., Wornen's Lib., Gay Lib, Lib, Lib! The breaking through of prejudices - traditions, race, sex and cover-ups. Today. because of rebellions, our future lives f coming of age J are full of OPPORTUNITIES! With a free-for-all world the New Generation takes over to shape this world a way in which onbf the future can tell! We need the 21 Drinking age cause it will mean less car wrecks and MA YBE lower insurance rates. The 21 Drinking age means 1 can do anything - have a family, ajob, a car, but no BO0ZE! Let's skip to Mac's! The students that skip all the time aren 't caught often enough. I hate Sweeps! - ain 't they a d-u-c-k! TZG.lE ll! Love my Dubie. The weed smokers here don 't let you get within ten yards of the bathroom without gettin ' high from the air! The stuff that's been happenin' to this school makes ya realize there is a world outside. The death of a girl who went here and her brother made me feel shock and anger - What is this world? The suicide in the Parking Lot made me realize I got a great life here at PN!-L The college-prep courses put a strain on the brain.!! The teachers are more friendly after school - they smile more I in reliefj after teaching us hardheads! The teachers here will help you all they can and will stick by and encourage you - they 're terrific! There are too many Mickey Mouse courses, they won 't get you in to college. This year, with the help of Mr. John Schmidt, the Freshmen class developed an excep- tionally good float. On the theme of 'Reaching for the Sky they made the Empire State building with King Kong on top with his hand reaching for the sky . Even though the Freshmen class didn 't win first place, they should feel proud that they had enough support ffrom Mr. Schmidt! to have been able to produce the excellent float that they did! 22 mean.-:.u.,,iu '-'i' -4- IIITU - +- -1 451 U li, if ,A - 4 , IM, il :L fy 9 ,zltxlr L 'frm ,L EF: ,,f Q f ::-. . r -'ef W 5, DTH' ' ffl? d ' X I X . e V , V if 'E : yi 1 ix Q l af, X ll , , i gee T 41 ll ,,.A, ,4f XV il Smith, Dale ,Kl7li'ih, ffdll Sfltlllll Joelwm' Smith, Laura Smith, Marty Smith, Monica Smith, Rhonda Smith, Sonya Smith, Stephanie Smith, Vanessa Snell, George Snoddv. Besides the usual festivities such as Spirit Week the campaigning and voting for Homecoming Court also took phce. After a whole week of putting up posters, handing out buttons, etc., the elec- tion finally came. The students were able to cast their votes for the candidates of their chss, as well as for the King and Queen. The Junior class cast their votes, and here are Danny Tominello and Terri Redmond, the two lucky people the Junior class chose for Court. CONGRATULATIONS! Mrs. King who is loved by all Seniors for her straight out charming personality. She is like a friend to all who know her. Mr. Hull, who has tried to prepare us for our future lives along with college. Mr. McShan, who is our class principal. Most Seniors have a great respect for this man. He keeps us walking a straight forward line and when we cross it, he steps in with a firm hand to get us back on the right track. Last, but certainly not least, Mr. Harris. He played a major part in helping us build the float. He had to put up with all our nonsense and procrastination, and he also contributed many of the supplies. We, Seniors could never repay these people for all the've done, but we do appreciate it and it hasn't gone unnoticed. Thank- You. to Turin to for Help I LW - -- l 7 st 1 .. Probably the most enjoyable is the Senior trip. ltis hard to come to an agreement when you have alot of different opinions. Everyone wants to go somewhere different. But through many meetings and arguments the Class of 79 will be going to Disneyland. We will leave at 5:00 a.m. on the 4th of May and return on the 7th of May. We will spend one day at Disneyhnd, one day at Daytona Beach, and one day at the Kennedy Space Center. The total cost of the trip is 3239.00 and pictured here are some Seniors making their payment. We took lst place in the float competition on our Homecoming and also won the spirit jug at the pep assembly that morning. Which proves that besides being the best float builders we also have the biggest mouths. This year our Homecoming theme was Reaching For the Sky and the game was played against Lakeland which we won 18-6, what a way to end a day. Also well like to thank Ed Myre hr allowing us to build the float at his house. . ---- W V -,H ,,,,,m.,,,....-,..., , , I Reaching For The Sky F J 'M Ln r. 1.- ll .r 4 R ,-.... r hm- I., l. , , i , l l ai' ' 'IH-if A . 1 4 . 3 gt 'IQ xr, M 1,,,i+f 1 V+' n. , ' -in 1 ' f :Et-g' if--1' ,4- . To us, the staff we see the book as alot of boards, alot of pasteup, alot of pictures and alot of headaches. And yet when it comes back to us in it's entirety it all seems worth it. We see tlze effort, time and thought that each one of us has put into it. It then becomes to us what it is to you, a memory! A reminiscence of a year gone by. The good times and bad, the happy and sad. But most of all it brings back a special year and special times. There are many people that go into the making of a yearbook. First of all I ki like to thank the yearbook staff who had more to do with making this book the best it could ever be than anyone. They 're a fantastic staff and together we have produced a book that will never be forgotten. Also 121 like to thank Mn Al Weatherly, our printer, and Mr. Frank S torer, our photographer, for helping us through the hard times and giving their support when needed. Mr. Michael Davis also played his part in the Avalanche by bailing us out of copy deadlines. Last but not least lk! like to thank our chief advisor Mr. Kennith Ferguson. r in-b Y ??0 1' ,.
