In terms of dollars and cents then, your diploma is a most rewarding climax to your twelve years of learning. Now, a new era has begun. There are more important decisions to be made. Among them, where do you go from here? The avenues to a bright and prosperous future are more numerous than ever before, how- ever, they are the most challenging, most competitive that we have ever experienced. Through the years the Pontiac School System has worked to perlect a program which would expose the high school student to many facets ol the English language. Not only does the student learn how to coniugate a verb and diagram a sentence, he also examines the literary works ol authors who have lived during the various periods ot the development ol world literature. ln doing this he views the correct usage ol the language and how writing trends have developed. The study ot these literary works also enriches the students mind and challenges his intellect. In a sense, all studies are social since they are carried on by human beings for human purposes. Here at Northern, however, most ol the time devoted to social studies is spent on history. United States history and civics are a must for every student who enrolls at Northern. He may also supplement these subiects with studies in world history, world geography, or Studies in American Democracy which consists of English, psychology and civics. With the help of various current-events magazines and pamphlets the student widens his scope in world happenings and becomes a more aware citizen of today's world. During a student's three year stay at Northern, he has the opportunity to expand his scientific under- standing through the various spheres of activity which are available in the science department. With the help of qualified instructors, the student learns the basic steps of scientific application and through experiments in the classrooms, he learns how to apply these methods in subiects such as biology, gen- eral science, chemistry, or physics. In the total school program it is believed that its function is to meet the needs ot the individual pupil and the group. This year Pontiac Northern's music department has expanded to accommodate the ever growing in- terest in music which has been expressed by the student body. Although no additional teachers have been added to the stall, each department has expanded in the number ot student participants and im- proved the quality ol performances immensely. In the vocal music department Mr. Dempsey and Miss Parry have organized completely new and different ensembles. Instead ol having the iunior and senior ensembles, each group is composed ot the most competent singers who auditioned. Mr. Rosegart has enlarged his band and continued his line presentations to the student body during athletic events and also during the instrumental music concerts. The orchestra has obtained a new conductor and is trying to improve its quantity as well as its quality. Since this organization has very lew members, they concentrate primarily on small ensemble pieces. Since most ol us will someday encounter people who do not speak English, the Pontiac School System has given us the opportunity ol learning to communicate in a foreign language. Here at Northern, four dillerent languages are altered. On mastering one ol them, a student should be able to communicate in either French, German, or Spanish. latin is taught to help students more fully understand English and its origin. A large portion ol our root words in English are derived from this ancient language. The instructors who aid us in mastering a loreign language are Mrs. Gary, Miss Householder, Mr. Gray, and Mr. Litton. ,y . , , FOREIGN LANGU GE 51 Mathematics is a world of wonder - a place where, with only a few numbers and points at our com- mand, the most amazing formulas and geometric figures appear as out of a magician's hat. When we wish to know how much? how many? how large? how fast? in what direction? with what chances? - the mathematician gives us a way to find the answer. Mathematics has its own logic - that is, a way of thinking. This year the enlarged mathematics de- partment is attempting to develop this logic and increase the student's ability in mathematics. During a three year stay at Pontiac Northern, each student has the opportunity to complete such courses as plane geometry, algebra, trigonometry, and solid geometry. In addition to these courses, a new advanced mathematics program has been created for the students who wish to further their mathematical knowledge. Under the instruction of Mr. Charles Murphy, these students concentrate pri- marily on courses such as basic functions, and beginning calculus. As well as exposing the student to numerous sports, the physical education teachers also strive to develop good sportsman- like qualities and help each person become a lunctioning part ol the group. Competing in physical competition also enables the student to develop the physical and mental stamina which he will use throughout his lile in making decisions. Here at Northern, each student is required to take physical education in their sophomore and iunior years. During this time he becomes acquainted with such sports equipment as golf clubs, tennis rockets, a diving board, paddle boards, and also the more commonly lound bats and balls. Under the super- vision ol competent instructors, the student learns to feel at home with this equipment while building and conditioning his reflexes and muscle coordination.
