Lelia, the elder of the two sis- ters, can speak a little English, due to a chance meeting with Julia Welles Hawkins during the time she was teaching in Hon- iluras. Mr. Cleneay told Julia of hav- ing gone to Honduras 35 years ago as an employee of the United Fruit Company, and of becoming one of the overseers. He later married a beautiful Spanish girl ind their daughters were reared in Spanish. the father never hav-. ing time to devote to teaching them English. Mr. Cler-cay expressed regret tl'-at his daughters could not speak English and Julia told him that if he would arrange to have his daughter brcpight to the Eng- lish school in Lima she would do her best to ti-ach her the simple English words. Miss Garcia's father is also an oversi-er for the United Fruit Co. and he, too, was desirous of hav- ing his daughter learn English so, when the daughters of Mr, and Mrs. Cleneay told Clara that they were going to the United States to study English, Clara implored the father to allow her to ac- company her two friends here. With all arragnements com- pleted, the trio set out from Lima August 20 and arrived in New Orleans where agents of Unit- ed Fruit Company put them on a bus for Ponchatoula, and notified Arthur Jones, friend of Mr. Clen- eay, of their time of arrival. The girls are studying mathe- matics, have two classes in Eng- lish, and take three hours in Spanish with the Spanish class. Here the girls assist in Spanish, and are, in turn, assisted in Eng- lish. Clara and Olivia are Fresh- men at the school, All three of the girls are living at the home of Mrs. L. C.
