Master Chief Petty Officer Paul L. Adkisson was born in Bakersfield, California where he attended Bakersfield High School prior to entering the Navy in January 1955. Upon completion of Basic Training at the Naval Training Center, San Diego, California, Master Chief Adkisson was assigned to the USS COLAHAN QDD-6581 where he remained for the duration of his first enlistment. During the two years of broken service that followed, Master Chief Adkisson attended Bakersfield College where he completed his High School education and furthered his studies through courses in Criminal Justice. Master Chief Adkisson returned to active duty in December 1960. He served on board the USS COWELL QDD-5471 until being accepted in Nuclear Power School in October 1961. Upon completion of Nuclear Power School, Master Chief Adkisson attended Submarine School in New London, Connec- ticut and was then assigned to the fast attack nuclear submarine USS SEADRAGON QSSN-5841 homeported in Hawaii. ADKISSON reassigned to the U.S. Naval Support Activity, DaNang, Vietnam as assistant Repair Officer. He returned to Hawaii in 1967 where he served aboard the USS TECUMSEH QSSBN-6281 for one patrol before being reassigned. During his second tour in Vietnam, Master Chief Adkisson was assigned as Assistant Chief Investigator, U.S. Naval Foreign Claims Office, U.S. Naval Support Facility, DaNang. Master Chief Adkisson reported for duty on the Floating Drydock ARD-30, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii in July 1969 where he served as Assistant Chief Engineer and Chief Master at Arms. In September 1972, he was further assigned to the USS CHIPOLA QAO-633 until she was decommissioned in August 1973. Master Chief Adkisson served aboard the USS PREBLE QDLG-151 from August 1973 until he received his assignment to the USS PONCHATOULA QAO-1481 in August 1975.
