Commander Wehling entered the Navy in March of 1953, upon graduation from St. Proco- pious College in Illinois. He enter e d Officer Candidate School and was commissioned an En- sign in November. A tour as Electronic Warfare Officer aboard USS Hancock was followed by a tour as Naval Gunfire Liaison Officer with the lst Bat- talion, 5th Marines and later the Regimental Headquarters, lst Marines at Camp Pendelton, California. Connnander Wehling then attended CIC School prior to an assignment as CIC Officer! Assistant Missile Flight Tr acking Officer abo ar d USS Nortonsound. He participated in Project Argus, which provided information con- cerning the VanAllen radiation belt that sur- rounds the earth, information vital for manned space flight. In 1959, Commander Wehling joined USS James C. Owens as Operations Officer, then on duty in the Mediterranean. His next tour as Officer-in-Charge of the Electronic Warfare School in Newport Rhode Island was followed by an assignment as Staff Navigator, Carrier Division Four, aboard the USS Forrestal. After a series of special schools at Key West Florida, Commander Wehlin g assumed command of the U.S. Naval Facility, Grand Turk West Indies, an oceanographic research station. His next assignment as Executive Officer on the USS Austin was cut short by a sudden modification of orders to assume duties as Chief Staff Officer of the Coastal Surveillance Force, the highly successful Market Time operation along the coast of South Vietnam. After seven months in country, Commander Wehling moved to the Headquarters, U.S. Mili- tary Assistance Command Vietnam in Saigon. For meritorious service while serving in Viet- nam, Commander Wehling was awarded the Bronze Star. Prior to reporting to Ponchatoula, Com- mander Wehling spent six months as Executive Of f i c e r of the USS Tanner before decommis- sioning her in Bremerton Washington.
