UNITED STATES SHIP PONCE LPD-15 REFLECTIONS Reflections in the wake of an LPD are many. In the case of the United States Ship PONCE, she was commissioned in July 1971 and was the first warship to hear the name. During a short hut active history, a constantly changing crew of 400 and their 16,320 ton home have successfully cast reflections in the Caribbean and Mediterranean Seas. PONCE made her maiden voyage in 1971, deploying from Bremerton, Washington where she was built and commissioned. After several port visits along the West Coast PONCE transited the Panama Canal and proceeded to PONCE, Puerto Rico, the city for which she was named. From here, PONCE sailed north to her new home port, Norfolk, Virginia. Today PONCE's reputation is a proud one. She is the newest LPD of her class and has won the Battle Efficiency E Award twice in her short history of amphibious operations. In only four years, PONCE has sailed to many ports of the world, having deployed to the Caribbean four times, the Mediterranean twice, and the North Atlantic once. On the Morning of 25 September 1974, PONCE, with men and combat equipment of Second Battalion. Eighth Marines embarked, was underway for a repeat performance of her 1973 Mediterranean deployment with the Sixth Fleet. It is the reflections of this cruise to which this book is dedicated.
