Today, October the Third, als I Write this message for the CAT TALE, Astronaut Walter M. Schirra has made a safe landing in the Pacific Ocean after completing his sixth orbit of the earth. His feat is only the most recent of the many modern miracles which we have come to expect as a nomial part of living in the Year of our Lord 1962. Today's achievements far ex- ceed the vivid imaginations of the science fiction writers of a few years ago. We are so accustomed to think in terms of enormous size, fantastic speed, billions of dollars, and millions of light years that we are inclined to overlook the importance of those traits, at- MISS CAROLYN BAGBY E n g l i s h Department Chairmang English 123 English Il PRINCIPAL HOMER S. ANDERSON tributes, and qualities that can- not be measured quantitative- ly. Other events that share the headlines with Astronaut Schirra's fine achievement in- dicate all too clearly that Whereas man is fast learning the ability to live in space, he has yet to learn to live in har- mony with his fellow man. How appropriate for these times are the Words of Stephen Vincent Benet: Our earth is but a small star in the great universe. Yet of it we can make, if We choose, a planet unvexed by war, untroubled by hunger or fear, undivided by 'senseless distinctions of race. color or theory. MRS.
