DEDEICATTON Ponca City is one of the most progres- sive and modern cities in the Southwest. Established at the time of the opening of the Cherokee Strip, September 16, 1893, through the first two decades of its ex- istence. it was like all other frontier towns populated by young, aggressive people and led by ambitious and farsighted empire builders. Then the discovery of oil, with the ac- companying industrialization of the com- munity and the growth of its agriculture production, skyrocketed Ponca City into prominence among the dynamic cities of the great plains country. Few communities can boast of such a prominent citizenry as can Ponca City. Such men as E. W. Marland, Lew Wentz, Dan Moran, and W. H. McFadden made our town a show place of beautiful homes, spacious parks, booming industries, and foresighted planning for the future. E. W. Marland, former governor of Ok- lahoma, commissioned Bryant Baker to sculpture a statue of a woman in bronze that would depict the pioneering spirit of the women that settled Oklahoma after the famous run of the Cherokee Strip. This statue, appropriately titled the Pio- neer Il omrm, has become one of the well- known landmarks of our state. In 1958 the Pioneer Woman Museum was com- pleted to present the historical background of our forefathers to today's young people. Years ago the discovery of oil brought a booming industry to Kay County. Ponca City became the seat for outstanding oil processing plants, Eventually Continen- tal and Cities Service Oil Companies built huge refineries which have brought industrial fame, wealth, and prosperity for many years to our community. Such men as these mentioned before shared their fi- nancial gains with the people of their town. Because of their generosity and far- sightedness, we now share seventeen parks, covering an area of 1,476.28 acres, three swimming pools, eleven tennis courts, nine baseball'diamonds, and several lakes and ponds. The famed 101 Ranch just south of town was ranked among the leaders in the cattle industry of the nineteenth century. In its heyday it housed such famous guests as President Theodore Roosevelt, who came to hunt buffalo as a guest of the Miller Brothers, owners of that vast cattle range. fcontinuedj page 3.
