Through the years the oil business has become a mainstay in our nation's economy. City owes its own measure of thanks to the oil companies in this area. For through them our has become the progressive, thriving city it is today. . Businessmen, intrigued by the call of a town booming with oil, came to this area to make their homes. Through the years the increasing number of men and women required in the field of oil has made our population grow by leaps and bounds. ln the future still more people will be affiliated with the petroleum industry and will be moving to this area. Besides promoting competition and better business, the oil world has brought a great deal of civic aid to the inhabitants of Ponca City. Because of this assistance we have a fine ball park, numerous recreational areas, a better school system, more educational scholarships, and a bright future for the Ponca City youth. To express widespread community appreciation, the i958 CAT TALE is dedicated to an industry which properly merits such an honor. Proudly we offer our oil progress edition to the students of Ponca City High School. In choosing the theme for the T958 CAT TALE the staff felt that the dedication should honor afield closely associated h thin with the students of Po Hi In recognition of t is no g could be more fitting than a dedication to the oil lndustry and its progress in Ponca City Thousands of Ponca City residents are employed by or depend upon one of the citys two maior oil companies tor their livelihood Our student body itself benefits In many ways from the services and recreational and cultural fields W have built into this years book an historical and pic e tonal explanation of the processes employed by the oil in d n its work and we have attempted to give a better ustry i idea ot the achievements by which the citizens of Ponca City profit every day Our thanks and appreciation go to the many people whose of the cooperation has made possible the presentation to you 58 CAT TALE The statf sincerely hopes that you enioy the memories this book will furnish you as much as We have engoyed bringing it to you dl-.1 Anita Bottoms and the Staff ' C ' I ' facilities furnished them in the ' 4.1 CONTENTS 'Nr I IBI DEDICATION FOREWORD ADMINISTRATION ACTIVITIES CLASSES AUTOGRAPHS PERSONALITIES SPORTS SCHOOL LIFE HISTORY PICTURE CREDITS !'I' 'M . fff ,bw r 4, -4' '4 ,I .1 rw.. r L, I ' , ,dz igiigzff , AQ' ff' 4 'h 7-1' r -+L x 'Z' igv, -er - ' ' -19.31 U 1 .ax 'E R61 -Lv SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE The Continental Oil Company and the Cities Service Oil Company both have large refineries in Ponca City. Oil has been responsible for the steady growth of Ponca City almost since its founding. The tremen- dous property investment in the two refineries is reflected in the net assessed valuation of the Ponca City School District. Since the ability of a school district to support an adequate program of education is so closely related to the net assessed valuation of the district, the location of Continental and Cities Service in Ponca City has contributed greatly to the quality of the educational program. Our school system could not have a broad curriculum and outstand- ing buildings staffed with well-trained teachers if we did not have the tax revenue from the oil companies. We are proud of these large indus- tries and pledge our continued efforts in operating an outstanding school program for the boys and girls of Ponca City. at PRlNClPAL'S MESSAGE Ponca City students are indeed fortunate in the superior educational facilities made possible by the Continental Oil Company and the Cities Service Oil Company. They are fortunate, too, in the other advantages that come to them from these companies. Many Ponca City graduates have been enabled to continue their edu- cation by the liberal scholarship plans of the Continental Oil Company andthe Cities Service Oil Company. The high school graduate who has acquired the necessary skills in commercial or vocational fields and the college graduate with his more highly specialized training find unusual employment opportunities vvith these companies. The companies have been most cooperative and generous in making their facilities available for field trips by high school classes. The per- sonnel of the companies have given freely of their time to assist stu- dents with individual proiects and to address groups of students in their regular classroom recitations and during our Career Day conferences. To a large extent, Ponca City is what it is today because these com- panies and the high type of individuals employed by them have pro- moted the cultural, the educational, and the spiritual life of the com- munity. SmiIin' Through, the well-known comedy-drama by Allen Langdon Martin, was presented by the Senior Class of l958. This fantastic play is the story of a woman whose spirit returns to help a pair of young lovers achieve the happiness that she had been deniedfifty years ago. On the eve of her wedding night she fell victim to a bullet meant for the man she was to marry. The shot was fired by a rejected suitor, and over the years a great hate had existed be- tween the two families. Barnaby, an old miser who never smiles, reveals that he is giving the party to announce his engagement to Contrary Mary, one of the Widow Piper's fourteen children. The others do not take kindly to the news. They know that Mary is in love with Alan, Barnaby's nephew. They are about to duck Barnaby in his own lemonade barrel when he is saved by Tom, the Widow Piper's eldest son, who is betrothed to Jane, Barnaby's niece. Barnaby reveals that Jane and Alan have been lost in a storm at sea. His guests do not believe him, for they suspect that he is scheming to get his hands on their inheritance. Tom leaves for Toyland, believing that Jane has gone there. Barnaby obtains the help of the Widow Piper in per- suading Mary to be his bride. Two strangers, Gonzorgo and Roderigo, appear to collect their pay from Barnaby for disposing of his niece and nephew. However, Jane and Alan return home dressed as gypsies, and Alan has some fun with the Widow Piper and Gonzorgo in telling their fortunes. Mary refuses to wed Barnaby in spite of her mother's urging. Alan, believing Mary has forsaken him for the rich old miser, plans to leave Toyland with Jane as soon as they can collect their in- heritance. Barnaby conspires with Roderigo and Gonzorgo to lose Jane and Alan in the Spider Forest. Mary, to escape from Barnaby's attentions, bids goodbye to her brothers and sisters and sets out for Toyland. Alan and Jane are lost in the Spider Forest. Alan releases a moth from a spider's web. ln gratitude, the Fairy Queen sends a bear to save them from the Giant Spider. Then she guides them safely out of the forest. Lades U2 oyfzn Some of the hopefuls read through chorus parts while Suzanne sight-reads. IC'fOI4 jfQf6Qff 11 lmhnvi - - 1 1 I 1 N . They engage the services of Marmaduke, the Inspector of Toyland Detectives. The Master Toymaker showers the Piper children with presents, and his apprentice, Grumio, takes them out to see the sights of Toyland. Mary, masquerading as Mlle. Elisette, has become a designer in the Workshop. She arranges to hide there from Barnaby and the Widow Piper. Barnaby seeks to vent his spite upon the Piper children with toys that will maim and kill, but the Master Toymaker refuses to make them. Barnaby is soon ordered out of Toyland. As Alan has taken the toy cap- tain's uniform so he can escape from Toyland, Grumio insists that he lead the toy soldier parade with Jane as drum maiorette. Afterwards, Mary finds Alan and con- vinces him of her love for him, and begs his forgiveness. Barnaby releases the evil spirits from the flask where the Master Toymaker has tried to get all evil spirits, but they turn on Barnaby and beat him unmercifully. The Master Toymaker cannot be awakened from the trance which the evil spirits put him in. Alan is sentenced to to be beheaded, but he escapes. His friends plan to smuggle him out of Toyland, but Barnaby overhears their plotting. He forces a promise of marriage from Mary under threat of exposing Alan. But when Alan learns that Mary is promised to the old miser he has no further desire to escape. Barnaby drinks a glass of water from the Laughing Water Well. When he bursts into laughter and falls in the faint, the spell of the evil spirits is broken, releasing the Master Toymaker from his trance. Barnaby is revealed as the villain he is and all ends happily. of those lines! V17 Q I Wm af al f f tm v Q lwg T, Q fl -'i .A VR f L4 PL! fi Q fl he 'sr' 5.2, f, -f .,,. , , rcs? .f warg? productnon as does Ponca Cnty Thus we feel that nt ns only fnttnng to dednfate thns years annual to thns local nndustry whnch has added 50 much to our communnty and state We the staff contacted the Contnnental and Cntnes Servnce onl compannes nn June T957 to get permnssnon to photograph thenr varnous departments as layouts for the years break pages Both Mr Robert Bosworth of Contnnental and Mr Howard Shepard of Cntnes Servnce have been most co operatnve and we want to express our apprecnatnon to both of these men and thenr em ployees who have helped us produce thns years Cat Tale Of course FO yearbook would be complete wnthout a cover and we feel that thns years cover ns our best yet We cannot take the crednt for the photography of our onlweln In he 5ernnCentennnal edntnon of Oklahoma Today one of our staff members found thns pncture of a typncal Oklahoma sunset reflected behnnd one of our many onl wells However the photograph a colorful descrnptnon of our theme nmmednately gave us the ndea for our cover to complete the onl progress motnf We soon learned that Mr Ross Cummnngs Oklahoma Cnty was the pnctures photographer Much to our surprnse we were nn formed nn a letter from Mr Cummnngs that he had attended the Ponca Cnty publnc schools and that at the present hns mother Mrs Genevneve Cummnngs ns a teacher nn the Jurnnor Hngh School Mr Cummnngs was most pleased to have us use hns pncture for our cover and he nmmednately sent us the colored trans parency nn tnme for our October deadlnne Mr Cummnngs took our cover pncture on one of hns frequent trnps between Ponca Cnty and Oklahoma Cnty As he was re turnnng to Oklahoma Cnty one sprnng Sunday he was aware Guthrne the red rays suddenly flashed on a typncal Oklahoma onl well but as any eye can see the brnllnantly contrasted colors made the scene anythnng but common place beauty Mr Cum mnngs at once stopped hns car set up hns camera and snapped the pncture We are delnghted that he dnd because that ns the way we came nnto possessnon of the beautnful cover pncture taken by one of our former students We cant express our true apprecnatnon to thns alumnus other than to say Thank you Mr Cummnngs for benng most co operatnve nn lettnng us use your pncture Thnngs seemed pretty settled after we found our cover We systematncally snapped pnctures made layouts wrote copy and generally buzzed about meetnng our regular deadlnnes to the publnshnng company Mr Bob Burton our photography sponsor worked dnlngently wnth the assnstance of personnel of our local onl nndustrnes to fnnd pnctornal subnects whnch would depnct each nmportant phase of the onl nndustry Both Mr Bosworth and Mr Shepard helped us dnvnde our theme nnto these enght departments Mr Burton then found the subnects nn varnous departments of Contnnental and Cntnes Servnce whnch he felt we could best use as our break pages RESEARCH Modern scnence has played an nmportant part nn the progressnve onl nndustry Contnnental Onl Company nn Ponca Cnty has one of the most up to date research laboratornes nn the country They have recently added the atomnc reactor to thenr research department and thns gnves our local nndustry one of the few atomnc reactors nn the Unnted States By the way Raymond Waddelow pnctured on the rnght s a former Po Hn student EXPLORATION Snnce there ns so much we could say about the fneld operatnon of an onl company we have dectded that nt ns best for us to stnck to those operatnons shown on our second break page I A Cntnes Servnce employee carrnes dynamnte charges to what The Cntnes Servnce sensmnc crew plants geophones nn Sands where new petroleum sources are sought By studynng sound waves these men map underground formatnons for clues whnch mnght nndncate onl bearnng possnbnlntnes A sensmnc exploratnon party sets off dynamnte charges The shock waves are reflected on the sensmograph recordnng truck Contours of the rock layers help narrow down the search for onl A Cntnes Servnce employee carrnes a geophone to pnck up shock waves bouncnng off the rock layers These waves are made by dynamnte blasts and are transmntted to a re cordnng sensmograph These Cntnes Servnce employees are maknng sound studnes nn the marsh countrnes of the earths subsurface structure The evndence may reveal that there ns onl or natural gas under thenr feet PRODUCTION One of the nnost dangerous robs nn the fneld ns that of the onl rngger These men worknng on one of the Cntnes Servnce wells seem unconcerned about the danger of thenr rob MANUFACTURING One of the most nmportant tools of the onl nndustry the Cntnes Servnce catalytnc cracker acts nn the capacnty of breaknng crude onl nnto the fractnons of gasolnne propane butane kerosene and nts other dnvnsnons PACKING Cannnng onl ns a fascnnatnng process Modern machnn ery has allevnated much more power nn recent years, however one man ns always on duty to supervnse thns process The mechanncal gennus of the machnnery makes a colorful pncture as the Cntnes Servnce green and whnte cans run through the as sembly Inne TRANSPORTATION Much ol ns shnpped by l and thus nn Oklahoma an onl tanker car ns a common snght Sometnmes we fanl to notnce the pncturesque vnew of these every day snghts at Contnnental REFINING The sunlnght shnnnng on the snakelnke pnpes weaves a beautnful pncture for Oklahomas fnrst nndustry Much onl and gas ns refnned and carrned to farflung parts of the Unnted States by these strands of lead and nron pnpes at Contnnental Thns nndustry that has made Ponca Cnty what nt ns today touches more Amerncan Innes than one can nmagnne MARKETING The fnnal step ns naturally the retanlnng of gas to the Amerncan publnc In thns day and age the servnce statnon offers many servnces besndes gas and onl for the automobnle Such convennences for the traveler are clean rest rooms soft drnnks and frnendly conversatnon Many statnons lnke thns one owned by Barney Alston on South Avenue can be spotted nn almost every town nn the Unnted States and Canada Thus Ponca Cnty through nts onl nndustrnes and other servnces too has land nts phase nn the hnghway of Amerncan lnfe We can well be proud that we lnve nn such a thrnvnng and nndustrnous communnty whnch ns anded by Contnnental and Cntnes Servnce Mr Panne and Mr Anderson have already told us how these two compannes help us as students Thns ns our way of saynng Thanks It ns surprnsnng the number of actnvntnes that students engage nn each year Many of these actnvntnes we the annual staff couldnt attend personally so we engaged fellow students to take the pnctures and get the necessary nnformatnon For nnstance Lowell Brown covered the Band s trnp to Calnfornna for us Marlnn Harrns Mark Frohlnch and Arlnn McClendon also dnd photography work such as taknng and prnntnng some of our pnctures It would be nmpossnble for us to express our apprecnatnon to all of the co-operatnve students faculty members, and busnness men who have lent us a helpnng hand thns year Just let us say that we hope you fnnd the annual to your satnsfactnon, and are looknng forward to next year's CAT TALE, too Rnght now we are nn the process of blueprnntnng the 1959 CAT TALE See you then ns hoped to be a future onl well
