WIN PAYNE, Superintendent of the Ponca City Schools. During my twelve years of association with the Ponca City Schools and especially during the three years I have served as Superintendent, it has given me great satisfaction to view the con- stant growth of School Spirit and Student accomplishment in both the academic and co-curricular areas of the Ponca City Senior High School. This graduating class has given further impetus to this worthy tradition. During the War years many of our former students made the Supreme Sacrifice and others served with distinction, bringing great honor to themselves, to Ponca City Senior High School, to their state and to this nation. The challenges of today, though of a different nature, are definite, namely: to preserve Democracy at home and to promote World Cooperation so that World Peace may become a reality. By attacking these two issues in the same manner that this class of '49 has attacked all school problems, your contri- bution to your generation can so-ar to an unprecedented height. -3- Administration Loft lo right: Mr. Charles Duffyg Mrs. Jesse B. ALL-SCHOOL PLAY The Reardons are a typical American family whose ec- centricities, if hilarious, are only nomial. Laura, the mother, is a social climber who tells tales about her glori- ous ancestry. She is deliriously happy because she has engineered a match between her daughter, Marcia, and wealthy Sherwin Parker. The youngest Reardon, Penelope, is a demon with a slingshot and the piano. Warry,j.he only son, is positive he is the coming Eugene O'Neill. Reginald, the father, would rather tinker with the automobile than ticker tape, and Nana, the wisecracking grandmother, is only concerned with Bing Crosby records and getting rid of the Parkers. Nana succeeds in doing this with the help of Cousin Lily, an adorable liar from down home with stage aspirations. Lily, arriving unexpectedly, agrees to impersonate another cousin Lily if Nana will help her get an acting job. Her performance as the skeleton in the Reardon closet is so convincing and the lurid facts she reveals so hilariously shocking that the mighty Parkers take to their heels in a hurry and Marcia is reunited with the boy she really loves. Nana retums to her Crosby rec- ords with the satisfaction of a job well done and Warry decides that even though his distant relative is a bit on the daft side, she's the only girl for him. . 1:-' io: Q- ji 5 1 : rt 'i ' 1 ni i .1 - iii. -f is 7' ' I What every family has both Wells. The District 8A title hinged on the Cushing-Ponca City game as the two strong teams met Friday night, October 15, at Cushing. It was in this game that the Cats met their match and were downed 13-0. The following week-end the squad met another district champion in the form of Enid. The Cats were again subdued by the same margin. With four wins and two defeats the squad regained their enthusiasm and plowed under Chilocco, Perry, and Guthrie. The Wildcats ended the season with the annual Thanksgiving Day game with Blackwell. Although the Cats were the favored team an alert Maroon eleven took advantage of their breaks and emerged victors 7-0. The Cats ended a successful season with seven wins and three losses and placed four men on the All-District team and two to All-State berths. Boring, Silvy, Catlin, and Bowman were selected to the All-District team. Catlin was selected as Lineman of the Week after the Enid game and was selected as center on the Daily Oklahoman's All-State team. Bowman received the position of tackle on the All-State team selected by the Tulsa World. -111- ,g 3 .AV ,gy Aff, Q. a A ,H 5' 1 .,f'gf,ffN-3.1 1, ,y an eubm 4. ,L f www M!k4t,,?e xt Q, vw A :A ,,' 1.34 -A V y ' V 1, M ig - 733-5' if j?4Ey'+2?5'VkQ f5 gkfnk 2 1 ' H-w eL.7,' , f??jf,fs 2 fg -e,,gj'?Ef, fz:.'i :ww 'I' 1 :Lg f 4 :4ss.mi?s,. ihvfls W sure - -FVfsv2:1fi-53235 BUD SMITH-Back DICK BOWMAN-Tackle JERRY NICKS-Tackle BOB SALE-Back . From a group of several candidates fifteen were selected to remain on the squad. The squad reached its full strength at the close of football season when fifteen more prospects were added to the squad. At the beginning of the season the Wildcats had four returning lettermeng Captain Tom Holliday, Tom Catlin, Steve Parsons, and LeRoy Wilks. Other players who made the A team were Reed Mc- Alister, Rollo Maxwell. Bob Daniels, Bob Sale.Howard Martin and Rex Maddox. Jim Vance. Don Kane and John Jobe saw limited service on the A squad. The season started to roll with a narrow win over the Chilocco lndians. Next came the Conference pre-season tournament and the Cats sounded a warning on what was to come by winning the tour- nament and defeating the three favored teams for conference honors-Cushing, Stillwater, and Drumright. After the tournament the Wildcats completed their early season play with a victory over Oklahoma City Central and losses to Enid and Wellington, Kansas. After the Christmas vacation the conference schedule received the major attention. The team won the first ten conference games before stumbling over the Guthrie Bluejays 38-37. The Cats had previously beaten Guthrie by twenty points. Drumright was the only other conference team to win from Ponca City. Next came the regional tournament at Bartlesville. Again the bracket did not favor Ponca City. To win, the Wildcats had to defeat the three best teams in the tournament. Holliday, Catlin, and Maxwell provided the spark to defeat Miami 33-29. Next came the tough Nowata team, co-champions of their conference. The Wildcats, playing one of their best games of the season, earned the right to meet Bartlesville in the finals by winning over Nowata 37-33. In this game Holliday, Catlin, and Steve Parsons were the big guns for Ponca City. The Bartlesville team went down to de- feat by the tune of 25-20. In this game Holliday, Catlin, and Le- Roy Wilks turned in fine performances to lead Ponca City to its first regional championship in I2 years. The Wildcats chewed El Reno, the State's top-ranking team in the first round of the state tournament. The team next year will be without the services of five excel- lent senior members, Tom Holliday, Tom Catlin, Le Roy Wilkes, Steve Parsons, and Reed McAlister. These seniors formed the back- ground for one of the best teams in the history of Ponca City High School. The prospects for next year's cage teams are good as Ponca City will again be represented by a fine group of seniors, who as juniors turned in line performances to help make the basketball season highly successful. Tulsa Rogers 20 10th Place in Geary Tournament An ambitious squad of 35 sophomores, 25 juniors, and I2 seniors reported for wrestling early in December. The season opened with two lettermen, Gene Nicks and Bill Law- ver, and eight new members. This group gave a good account of themselves, placing third in the UMA Tournament. Gene Nicks and Wayne Malone plated first in heavyweight and 165. One week later this group scored a one-sided victory over Winheld. Unforeseen incidents in the form of injuries, sickness, and many others too numberous to mention here plagued the team from the day Gene broke his collar bone in a friendly squad scuffle. Consequently the promising outlook in December changed into a very disappointing season's record as far as the winning column was concerned. lt is hoped that some valuable lessons have been learned from the hard knocks and that the I949-50 team will profit from them. Bill Lawver, Tom Kinkaid, George Boring, Wayne Malone, and .lerry Nicks are seniors and will be hard to replace. However, eight returning letlermen along with this year's splendid B squad and some ten or more Sopho- mores from this year's undefeated ,lunior High Kittens should give next year's squad a well-balanced and more experienced team.
