He was a member of the Ponca City Wildcat football team and played in several of the games of the 1945 season. His interest in music was shown by his membership in several musical organizations. He belonged to the boys' glee club and was drum major for the band in 1944-1945. Last summer he attended Oklahoma Baptist University where he was a member of the men's quartet and represented the school on several trips with that organiza- tion. He was a member of the Baptist church and took an active part in various phases of church work. Bob's untimely death on December 14, 1945, brought to a close a promising career and saddened the entire student body. He is greatly missed by his many friends. TO THE PONCA CITY BOARD OF EDUCATION whose comprehensive work brings about a closer relationship between the citizens of Ponca City and the students of Ponca City Senior High School, we offer our appreciation. To this prominent body of community members do we therefore DEDICATE he 1946 Cal Tale Sealed Lefi to Right: E. M. Trout, President, Ward 25 R. E. Onstot, Ward 3g O. W. Meyer, Outlying 15 H. D. Washam, Clerk. Homer S. Anderson Printipal THE SCHOOL YEAR 1945-46 will be remembered in the annals of Ponca City High School as the year when peace came again bringing with it new interests, new activities, and new enthusiasms. The year was marked by the return of faculty members and former students who had served in the armed forces. Some of these service men enrolled as regular students in order to complete the requirements for graduation or to brush up on some of the fundamentals before entering college. Others came by just to say hello and thank you for the many expressions of interest that had been shown them while in the service. But although the war was over, the obliga- tion to finish the job was not forgotten. In keeping with the finest traditions of the school, Ponca High students responded generously to the Victory Bond Drive and to all other appeals for help. By so doing they kept faith with the 63 former students who are memorialized with Gold Stars on the school Service Flag and with the 1500 others from Ponca City High School who had an active part in making peace possible. Charles P. Howell Superintendent IN THE YEARS TO COME this Yearbook will be your most valued high school memenro. Through it you will be able to recall the names of friends and classmates you would otherwise never remember. The football games, the high school plays, the queen contests, and the school parties will spring to life again as you turn its pages. You will look at the picture of those queer people known as teachers and realize that they were your real friends and true counselors. Many times you will say, Oh, if I had only followed their advice. As you study the content of this book you will realize it represents the transition of the Schools at War, to the Schools at Peace period. It will be unique in that it will reflect both the effects of the War on education and its future trends. As the years go by, I hope you will always be intrigued by the ideals and traditions of the Ponca City High School. May the feelings of love and loyalty aroused in you when you helped sing Ponca City, I Love You, and when you repeated the school creed, always live in your memory. Miss Adeline Van Winkle, now Mrs. Louis B. Linch, was the first president. The pep club continued to grow under the sponsorship of Mrs. Anne C. Ellis, Miss Louise Whitehead, Miss Mary Byerley, Miss Georgie Farley, Miss Virginia Springer, and Miss Inez Patterson. Today the club has a membership of 166 girls with Mrs. Velma Mitchell as the chief sponsor and Miss Thalia Payne and Miss Josephine Houston assisting her. When Mrs. Ellis was sponsor, the girls had many activities. In the 1921-22 school year the girls purchased blankets for the foot- ball boys, and the following year they bought sweaters for them. The money was raised by serving cafeteria style meals during the lunch hour since at that time there was no cafeteria in high school, then located where the present Junior High is now. This year the Dynamiters with fifty senior members and one hundred sixteen junior members have been active at all sports activi- ties and have written and produced a skit for each pep assembly. The first issue of the PONCAN was printed on November 28, 1917, nearly 29 years ago. The senior class of 1918, which numbered only 26, sponsored the publication. Since there were then no journalism classes, the work of the PONCAN was guided through the English department under Miss Josephine Duvall. The first class in journalism was established in 1924 by Willard Mayberry and has since had six teachers. Miss Mary Brigham, present journalism instructor, took charge of this department in january, 1936. In 1913 an attempt was made to establish a school paper, but failure came shortly. The paper was started again in 1917, and has been printed continuously since then. The first editor of the PONCAN was Maurice Meyer. Since that time many students have held this position, which is one of the school's highest offices. The PONCAN has received many awards in the 28 years of its publication. These include awards in contests sponsored by the National Scholastic Press Association and the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. It has also won first and second place awards in competitions sponsored by Oklahoma A. 8: M. College and by the Oklahoma Interscholastic Press Association. The present day PONCAN is published on a bi-monthly basis. It is a modern publication re- peating the student opinion and bringing news to the student body of Ponca City Senior High. The PONCAN is given free to every student and teacher. Since the beginning of the war it has been sent free of charge to any former student in the service who has requested it. Ponca City business men, who advertise in the PONCAN, has made a free PONCAN possible. Proceeds from the Pon' Dram Panic, of which the paper is one of the sponsors, go mainly to the PONCAN. During the 28 years of its publication the PONCAN has been printed by the Ponca City News. Clyde E. Muchmore, editor of the News, has generously allowed the staff 'to use his modern, well- equipped newspaper plant as a laboratory. oo Y OL' like Ur Fog, 1,21 of. 1r,,,.Efj'.1Gf,'. Then for ten years the students were 'without a record of their own making of each year's activities. Finally, in 1940, under the sponsorship of Mr. Floyd D. Focht, Mrs. Evelyn Prosser, Mrs. james S. Plummer, and Mr. Kenneth Keller, an annual for Ponca High was again published. It was christened the Cat Tale and each year since has seen the arrival of a new Cat Tale. To you-Mrs. Sandoz--without whose aid production of this annual would have been an impossibility, we offer thanks. And to you-students, faculty, and friends of Ponca High-we respectfully submit your 1946 Cat Tale, trusting that, out of the goodness of your heart, you will notice only the book's good points.-THE STAFF.
