On September 16, 1893, a village of tents was erected by the pioneers of Ponca City. Lots had been previously paid for and were obtained by drawing ballots. The same year, the small frame building, above, located on the pres- ent junior high campus, housed the first school in Ponca City. In 1896, the first stone school building, shown below, was built on the same site. Since 1893, four buildings have been built on this site. In 1908, Ponca City high school was a small brick building located where the Roosevelt grade school now is. The high school faculty consisted of three teachers and the principal. In 1911, a new gray stone high school building was erected where the junior high is located. This building housed the senior high school until 1928. From 1928 to 1938, it housed the junior high school. In 1938-39, a new and modern junior high school building replaced the old vine-covered stone building. ln 1928, twenty years after the organization ol the senior high school in Ponca City, a student body of five hundred and a faculty of twenty- two teachers entered the main building on the present campus, The cost of this building was 5330.000 ln 1935, the Industrial Arts building was ready to be used by students desiring training in drafting, drawing, electricity, woodwork, metal work, or machinery. In 1936-37, Blaine Park Stadium was constructed. In '39, the Fieldhouse was completed. Vocational agriculture, vocal and instrumental music, distributive education and both boys' and girls' physical education classes meet in the Fieldhouse. In 1939-40, more than one thousand students were enrolled in the senior high school under the instruction of thirty-seven teachers. In 1939, and again in 1941, Ponca City received the Phi Beta Kappa award from the Phi Beta Kappa Chapter at Oklahoma University. This award goes to the high school whose graduates make highest average as freshmen on the university campus. ln fifty years the Ponca City high school has grown from a small frame structure with three graduates to a modern up-to-date high school with three well equipped buildings and better than two hundred graduates.
