Dog 1944 On September 16, 1893, a village of tents was erected by the pioneers of Ponca City. Lots had been previously paid for and were obtained by drawing ballots. The same year, the small frame building, above, located on the pres- ent junior high campus, housed the first school in Ponca City. In 1896, the first stone school building, shown below, was built on the same site. Since 1893, four buildings have been built on this site. In 1908, Ponca City high school was a small brick building located where the Roosevelt grade school now is. The high school faculty consisted of three teachers and the principal. In 1911, a new gray stone high school building was erected where the junior high is located. This building housed the senior high school until 1928. From 1928 to 1938, it housed the junior high school. In 1938-39, a new and modern junior high school building replaced the old vine-covered stone building. ln 1928, twenty years after the organization ol the senior high school in Ponca City, a student body of five hundred and a faculty of twenty- two teachers entered the main building on the present campus, The cost of this building was 5330.000 ln 1935, the Industrial Arts building was ready to be used by students desiring training in drafting, drawing, electricity, woodwork, metal work, or machinery. In 1936-37, Blaine Park Stadium was constructed. In '39, the Fieldhouse was completed. Vocational agriculture, vocal and instrumental music, distributive education and both boys' and girls' physical education classes meet in the Fieldhouse. In 1939-40, more than one thousand students were enrolled in the senior high school under the instruction of thirty-seven teachers. In 1939, and again in 1941, Ponca City received the Phi Beta Kappa award from the Phi Beta Kappa Chapter at Oklahoma University. This award goes to the high school whose graduates make highest average as freshmen on the university campus. ln fifty years the Ponca City high school has grown from a small frame structure with three graduates to a modern up-to-date high school with three well equipped buildings and better than two hundred graduates. 4108? fm- fb lo 6' 0088 Z 45? FOCHT To express lo you our drotllude for the mony sf-frvzves which you have performed Wlth deep undersionduxq cmd unidilinq humor, for your efforts os chief sponsor of the SGYHOI' class, for your quidonce os chief sponsor oi the Student Council, we have dedicated to you the 1944 edltion of1he Cot Tolef' rms A ca ed the scheme at War Yearbook since in so many ways it reflects your participation in the war program, As in this war age realism predominates, so realism is in evidence in your daily activ- ities. Yet your thinking and your character traits reveal the highest type of idealism. It is our constant aim that the ideals, the loyalties, the traditions and the school spirit of Ponca High will have become so deep seated in your thinking and so much a part of you that they will act as a beacon light to guide your footsteps along'the pathway ol tile, civilian or military, ln this class we realize that aim, issue ol the Cat Tale might well be tt Along the way discouragement h s ave been many and they have been real. but you are the stronger for having Kept Right on to the End oi the Road. The record you are leav- ing in Ponca High will live fo ' r it is one ol outstanding achievement. Your individual records would indicate that success will always be within your reach. Each graduating class has some characteristic winch endears them to me. The Class ol 1944 is especially dear to me be- cause ol close personal contacts with so many of its mem- bers. I was present to welcome some ol you as you entered school for your first time. I remember as though it were yes- terday the eagerness and toy reflected on your faces as you set out on this twelve year voyage. lt will also be my rare good fortune to be present to congratulate you and wish you Godspeed on the night-ol commencement. Since my own son is a member ol this class I leel that l have taken this tourney with you, and, in eitect am closing o period in my life. Former classes may have done greater things: future classes may be more outstanding: but the achievements oi none other will be so indelibly stamped upon my memory as the class oi 1944. CHAR!-ES P. HOWELL. Superintendent raw f ff iam I As the war ell! the third year, Ponca High students realized more keenly than ever before their war-time responsibilities and obligations. Their citizenship and patriotism were best Sym- bolized by the Minute Man Flag that waved so proudly above the campus. It represented the whole-hearted cooperation of the student body in one particular war activity and exemplified the enthusiasm with which they responded to every call that was made. lt was a pledge of loyalty to the hundreds of former Ponca students serving on every front and on every seg. The memories of 1943-1944 will remain forever clear and poignant. War casts its shadow across all phases of school life. Some of thelboys whose pictures appear on these pages were in the armed services before the end of the school YQGI' and following graduation m an y others will tom them. It is our sincere belief that the many fond recollections of Ponca City High School-together with those traditions and ideals to which they had so frequently pledged their devotion not only would help to sustain their spirits in the far cor- ners of the earth but also would be a symbol of all things most worth fighting fOr- HoMEn s. The club conducts numerous field trips, sight seeing trips, and other tours, as well as attending various public sales. The F. F. A. farm, which is located northeast of town, is one oi the many outstanding achieve- ments of the club. The farm is run on cooperative basis with all the members participating in carrying out the work. All of the profit which is derived is returned to the organizations treasury. Not only do the boys work on this farm, but they carry out home projects as well These projects are divided into two groups: Supervised practice projects, and improvement projects. An example ol the first group would be a case in which a boy owned and raised a hog at his own expense and derived all the profit himself. Examples of the second group are barn building, terrace construction, solving soil reclamation problems, and any other work which is directed toward improvement rather than profit. The F. F. A. has a definite plan of advancement. The local degrees are Green Hand and Future Farmer. The state degree is Iunior Master Farmer, and the national degree is American Farmer, The F , F. A, is an outstanding organization of which we should all be proud. Back Row: Raymond Schiltz, Floyd Culp, Dick Bulford, R. O. Spencer, H. H. The Professor came here from Cleveland, Oklahoma, where he directed the hiqh school band. The band this year, though it numbers only 49, has carried on most ot its pre-war activities. However, it has been forced to abandon the attending of out-of-town band contests and toot- ball games. The accomplished high school bands of recent years are the results of the fine elementary music system in the Junior high and grade schools. ln the last few years our school system has been able to put as many as five bands on the street durina a single parade. Since school music got its start after World War I, Mr. Sadlo ex- presses the opinion that it will achieve even greater popularity alter this war. .ax , W veszgsmw-an f iilu Clarinets: 'Bob Westmoreland, Bill Burkett, lack Bogle, Marcena Davis, Frances Blue, Hal Wolfe, Ralph Goodwin, R.
