The play was pre- sented December 3, under the direction of Mr. Yott. A light Henry Aldrich comedy describing the problems of a teen-age boy, the entire action took place in the principals oflice. W'e hrst met Henry when he had been sent to the office for causing a disturbance in study hall. While there he met a classmate, Barbara Pearson. Henry was soon after caught cheating on a test and suspend- ed for sixty days. Because of a series of circum- stances, he was also accused of stealing the best part of the school band. Mr. Nelson, assistant principal, suggested to Mrs. Aldrich that Henry attend trade school where he could take a course in art, for which he had a wonderful talent. Finally Miss Wheeler and Mr. Ferguson found that the real thief was George Bigelo, a rival of Henry's. Henry attended trade school and went to the dance with Barbara, and the curtain fell on a happy Henry Aldrich and a much relieved high school faculty. The play was a great success, many claiming it was the funniest they had seen in years. Every member of the cast worked hard at the daily afternoon rehearsals, and everyone gave an excel- lent performance. Members of the cast will always remember this experience, with the professional make-up, bright footlights, and applause of the audience. It was an unforgettable evening filled with excitement and will always be treasured. 5 -v1ELL,W Wu , SENIOR PLAY CAST Miss Shea, Secretary , , ,, Mr. Nelson, Assistant Principal Mr. Patterson ., .... ,, Henry Aldrich , Barbara Pearson Miss Pike , Bill ...,.,..,. A new activity this year, the International Relations Club, was composed of students who were interested in world affairs. At their meetings they discussed current economic, political, and social problems and their remedies. Some of the members attended a meeting of the United Nations organization. The Spanish and French Clubs aim to make their respective languages enjoyable to the pupil. By appreciating the dances, songs, and customs of the countries, the club members become familiar with the French and Spanish people. Latin has a background of ancient culture, but the students considered the brighter, more human side of Latin in the world today, in order to develop a greater appreciation of their studies. We know today that the people of the world could live together in peace if they understood each other's language. These students will make better citizens of the world because of their interest in foreign languages and the problems facing other countries of the world. Ntliixc gtiiuiilyh pro- ol I 't WCW' .1 fn Ll mimi' The organization that truly represents the student body is the Student Council. Sponsored by Mrs. 'legge and Mr. Yott, this group tried to improve its activities and the school. Assembly programs and dances were given with the funds they earned by selling refresh- ments at games, from the magazine campaign, and from the sale of pennants and banners. They also donated money to the scholarship fund. Ten members attended the State Convention of Student Coun- cils at Princeton University to discuss the problems of councils with other high school representatives, A new tradition was established this year, The members were formally installed in assembly. They took the oath of oliice and the student body. in acknowledgement, pledged their cooperation. Bob De Remer should be congratulated on the splendid job he did as president of this active group. The 1949 Pioneer, we feel, is a distinctive yearbook, and we are proud of the finished product. This year we have tried to carry out the theme in the book itself with more articles, art work, and pages. Typists have set new records for speed and efficiency, The art staff has brought new arrangements, and many copies were sold by collectors and the sponsor committee. The band has grown consistently through the years under the excellent direction of Mr. Theodore Palmer. He has worked most industriously to achieve the perfection which the band now boasts. The first project of the hand was to entertain at the football games. Much time was spent on marching, but the effort was well rewarded by the response given to its intricate formations and the playing of On. Ob Pomptorz. The band again played in the Band Festival at Passaic Stadium. The display given by each band was concluded by the entire group playing a march under Percy Faith, guest conductor. Each director received a letter containing constructive criticism from the judges. After the fall activities, the band concentrated on preparing for two concerts-one in February, the other in May. At these concerts, different music was presented to please every taste. The officers of the band were George Florance, presidentg Lois Christ- mann, secretaryg and Dorothy Cort, treasurer. The band members chose these people for their leadership and dependability. In order to earn a band letter, each member must have good attendance, a helpful attitude, and musical ability. Letters are awarded on Red-Letter-Day. The climax of the musical season was reached when the band played for the Commencement Exercises. The past record of the band has been an inspiration to its members and should be an incentive for others. Through their original ideas, they are pioneering by setting the pace for those who will follow in their footsteps. x - x X Iayce Wbritcnour, bud majorzttz. In every sport our fellows play hard to come out on top as champions, and even when they are not offlcially state cham- pions, for our money they are the best champs who ever played. However, win or lose, our teams are famous for their sportsmanship. If we win, they do not gloatg if we lose, they do not cry. Their record is unimpeachable in this respect. Tradition figures largely in our sports. When we beat Butler by the highest score in our history, all seniors received their monkey jackets as Coach Benson had promised. As with every other school, we have traditional rivals whom we want to beat more than others, and this year we managed one out of two. There is a great deal of tradition connected with our trophies, and all the teams strive to keep those we have and gain new ones whenever possible In all athletics Pompton Lakes has always been outstanding This year our teams have been no different the fellows have played their hardest and set a fine record in sportsmanship and good conduct .11-wr their al gamer Y-5 ,....:a A. , . 7 g rwfi . , X '. r , . The Cardinals brought home a victory by defeating the Red and Black 20-13. In the first half it was all Pompton. Boonton rallied after the intermission to tie the score, but the Benson boys once again turned on their offensive guns to score and put the game on ice. DOVER A strong well-balanced Dover eleven invaded Hershfield Park and outclassed the Pomptonians 20-0 in the first home game of the season, The Cardinals put up a gallant fight, but were unable to penetrate the veteran Dover line which time and again outcharged the Pompton forward wall and broke through to spill our ball carriers in their tracks. RAMSEY In a night game played at Ramsey, the Cardinals re- turned to their winning ways and defeated a favored Blue and Gold team 26-18. The Redbirds presented a classy ground attack which helped them build up a commanding lead at half time. Profiit was the big siege gun for the Benson boys, scoring 25 of the 26 points. BOGOTA The Pompton machine turned on the gas to trample the Bogota aggregation 33-13. An intercepted Purple and Gold pass on the first play of the game paved the way for the Cardinals' initial touchdown. The entire forward wall played aggressive ball, and the speedy Red and White backs led by Captain De Remer reeled off long gains. RIDGEWOOD October 23 just wasn't a Cardinal day. Ridgewood put on the pressure and upset the Bensonites 7-0. The Maroon and White capitalized on breaks and pushed over a touch- down in the first quarter. The Pompton offensive failed to click at all in this tilt and the forward wall was out-maneu- vered by an alert Ridgewood line. FAIRLAWN Sports writers' grid calculations were upset as Coach Benson's aggressive eleven defeated Fairlawn 13-O. It was Pompton's day as the fast-charging line kept the Fairlawn speed merchants in check. McCarren played a great game at end, while the blocking of Gallo and Aug paved the way for long runs by Profyrit and De Remer. PASSAIC VALLEY On a muddy field Pompton rolled to its fifth victory at the expense of Passaic Valley. The Benson boys outclassed their foes in every department to win by a count of 20-6. Profiit to the right, to the left, and through the middle told the story as Russ ran wild to score all the Red and White points. BUTLER The Cardinals wrote finis to their 1948 grid campaign by overwhelming Butler 61-6. Scoring three touchdowns, Proffit brought his season's total to a new high in Pompton football history. The entire squad including V. and Freshman-Sophomore players clicked to perfection. De Remer, McCarren, Aug, Evans, Dooley, Profiit, Ottens, Gesbocker, L. Dropping an exciting, well-played game to Butler on the away court 35-30, the dauntless Cardinals came roaring back to nose out Boonton 64-61. At home once more, we absorbed our third defeat from the Fair Lawn aggregation, but the Cardinal and White refused to stay down. They went triumphantly on to smash Butler 68--49 and Bogota 59-48 at Bogota. After conceding their final defeat to Boonton 67-58. the Pomp- tonians overcame P.V. 50-38 and took the wind from Doxeris sails 44-42 to wind up the regular season. In the Lakeland Conference Jamboree. the P.L. quintet drubbed Butler 60--41 and smashed Passaic Valley -42-18 to take the 'lamboree championship. The athletes who represented Pompton Lakes played to the best of their ability and proved once again that fair play and sportsmanship are great traditions at Pompton Lakes High School.
