Charles O. Carlise, former Dean of Boys, now Assistant Prin- cipal, has not relinquished his close contact with PBSHS stu- dents and their activities. He still appears on campus, and elsewhere, often causing a chuckle or two with his gruff hu- mor. Most of us at Pompano feel that things just would not be the same without him.

Do you have to thrust your hand into the fire to know that it burns, to hurl yourself from the twentieth story of the Empire State Building to prove Newton’s law of gravitation, or to step into the path of an onrushing automobile to deter- mine that it can knock you down? Likewise would you think it necessary to live behind the Iron Curtain to ascertain the evils of Communism? Your answer to all these questions would be, “No, I have seen people burned by fire, killed by fall- ing, and injured by automobiles. I have also encountered the brainwashed, impoverished, and emaciated escapees from Communist dominated countries.” You will, I am sure, agree that knowledge is acquired by accepting well established facts as well as firsthand testing. Furthermore, there are some things in this life we do not have to prove but which we accept by faith. Emily Dickinson has well expressed my sentiments in the following short poem: I never say a moor, I never saw the sea; Yet know I how the heather looks, And what a wave must be. I never spoke with God, Nor visited in heaven; Yet certain am I of the spot As if the chart were given. Your friend, Larry I. Walden
