Pomona stiidefitos hold benefit for iniured classmate By JOAN LOWY News Stal! Pomona High School students danced all night Friday in the hope that a classmate might walk again. The high school's Chamber Choir organized a dance-athon to benefit Zant Scott, 16, who was hit by a car near the Arvada school in June. Scott, who was in a coma for two months, suf- fered brain stem injuries and fractures of his collarbone, leg and ribs. Scott, hospitalized since the accident, was released from Lutheran Medical Center for two hours to attend the dance. More than 100 screaming, jumping students greeted him as his mother and a friend guided his wheelchair into the school gym. Teresa Campbell, 17, president of the choir, said students hope to raise 55,000 to help defray some of Scott's medical bills. We want this to be a really big thing with the whole school involved, Campbell said. YDLlth POMONA PROBE Dance-a-thon By Chris Avery Pomona High students raised more than 83,000 at the recent dance-a-thon to benefit Zant Scott. The money will be used to pay for Zant's medical bills. Overall, the dance was deemed a complete success. Very spe- cial thanks should go to the Chamber Choir and Theresa Campbell for their time and effort in organizing the event. June 9, 1981 was the day Zant Scott was hit by a car and put into a coma for 2 months. After he recovered consciousness, he needed rehabilitation, and that meant money. That's where Theresa Campbell and Chamber Choir came in, they organized a dance-a- thon September 25. The dance was a total success and so many people showed up it rivaled even homecoming. In all, S3000 was raised. The dance also received nation-wide attention. 286 benefits Zant Besides the dance, school clubs have held bake sales and student council has been selling spirit and jinx dolls - yarn dolls in either Pomona's coiors or the colors of other area high school teams - to raise money for Scott, Without them, I don't know what I would have done, said Ginny M. Maloney, 38, of her son's classmates. Students began visiting Scott in the hospital's intensive care ward from the day he was injured and continue to arrive daily, Maloney said. Scott, who is learning to walk and talk again, isn't expected to be able to return to school for another year. Looking over the dancing crowd Friday, Ma- loney said, Many times I thought if Zant should die - and it was very close - there has to be a reason. And the only reason I could think of was that these kids would come to realize that life is precious. Zant Scott
