SENIOR SUPERLATIVES SENIOR SUPERLATI BEST DRESSED MARTHA PETERSEN BEST SMILE TERRI GARRISON AND TODD BRIDGEWATER Terri says that three years of braces and seventeen yea of brushing with Crest are what made her teeth 4 straight and as sparkling as can be, making her smile :I dynamic. Perhaps Todd was nominated for Best Smile because T the way other students feel about his smile. Like the ol songg There are smiles that make you happy. There are smiles that make you blue. There are smiles that wash away the teardrops, as the sunshine steals away the dew. There are smiles that have a tender meaning, that the eyes of love alone may see. But the smiles that fill my heart with laughter, are the smiles you give to me. It is probably the way others react to Todd, in othe words, one smile deserves another. Martha has participated in Student Council for the pas three years and she was Sophomore class president. Sh was nominated one of the five outstanding Sophomore: Martha participated in DECA her junior year. During he Senior year she was elected a student advisor. She feel that dressing well is a big part of her and how you look i important to how people see you and if you dress we people will think well of you. Troy Bryant was also nominated for Best Dressed but wa not available for pictures. Lori and Brad have been together for one year and seven months. They have future plans after they have both finished college. They feel that they have attended many of the school activities together. They feel that the dates that are the most fun for them are the ones when they are at a real nice restaurant together. Juli and Jerry are pleased to be nominated for the class clowns. They feel that laughter is the easiest and simplest form of communication, and it makes them happy to make others laugh. Maybe, if everyone was a little more the clown, we would have a happier, and more enjoyable society, for all the world loves a clown. Chris has been involved in several different clubs at Pomona and she has been able to meet a lot of neat peo- ple. She feels that spirit club has really been fun, there have been so many unforgettable experiences. Par- ticipating in sports enabled her to make close friends. Being involved with drama club and the musicals has given her a chance to become friends with so many talented people. Being a peer counselor in the student advisor program has helped her to understand herself and to help other people. She really likes the people at Pomona and enjoys going to school here. Mike said Perhaps I was voted Best Personality because of my caring and friendly manner with others. I try to in- volve myself in as many sports and activities as possible and through these I have met a lot of very wonderful people. I tend to treat everyone the same and try my best to get along with everyone I am with. I am outgoing, have a good sense of humor, and pretty much like myself. I try to make it as easy as possible to get along with others. I am very caring and responsive to peopIe's feelings. I AM ALSO MODEST. 75 -.li When Becky started Pomona as a Freshman, she was very quiet and shy, but by being a cheerleader she has had the opportunity to meet many people. Over that first year she became very talkative. Throughout the year no matter who she was talking to or what they were talking about, when a guy walked by, her head turned. She feels she would have to attribute being Class Flirt to Mike Williams who decided to change her name from Becky to Flirt . By the end of her first year at Pomona he had managed to tell everyone. Mark has been involved in football, wrestling and track and feels that this has helped him get along with other people very well. He really enjoys talking with other peo- ple too. Perhaps these things helped him to get nominated for class flirt. Susan has participated in Student Council for two years, she was class vice president her senior year. She has been a cheerleader for five years and also a member of Spirit Club. She attended outdoorlab as a high school counselor in the Fall of 1980. Steve has been involved in many things while ati Pomona. During his Freshman and Sophomore year he was involved in Conquest Club. Also during these years, Steve mostly supported Pomona by attending game and other activities. During his Junior year he went oui for Track, Cross Country and was DECA vice president. Through these things Steve learned good sportsman- ship, leadership and his pride for Pomona grew. He wa still going to games and supporting Pomona the bes way he knew how, with spirit. This being Steve's las year, he attended as many games as possible. Stev thinks that everyone should show pride. Todd has been weight training for five years. He has played football, wrestled and ran track. His weight train- ing has been a great deal of help in these sports. Lori also trains with weights as much as she can. She has lifted for four years. Lori has participated in gymnastics and her weight training has helped her in this. Connie feels that throughout her high school career she has been quite successful, at least as far as grades go. She feels that her accomplishments are the result of determination and conscientiousness. During her Sophomore year she worked extremely hard on her studies - it seemed as though she never did anything but homework. She received good grades during that en- tire year and that gave her the desire to keep working. Connie has truly enjoyed her four years at Pomona and she hopes everyone can benefit as much from their high school years as she did. When Larry started school his highest priority was to be valedictorian. That thought kept him going through high school. He plans to get a degree in engineering and then go on to Medical school. His next goal is to be hap- py, because if he can do that he has been as successful as a person can be. Teresa has been involved in the music department for four years. She participated in choir and has played the piano for some of the groups and Stage Band. She per- formed in four musicals and portrayed a part in the spr- ing melodrama and danced in a play. This year she is president of Chamber Choir and Drama Club and belongs to NHS and Optimist Club. Next year Teresa will tour with the group Up With People! Todd has been involved in vocal and instrumental music throughout high school. He has participated in many different bands and has performed in many different choirs. He has held parts in several musicals and plays. Todd has been involved in the production of programs and tickets for the musicals and plays. His artistic ac- complishments also include being set crew director for two musicals. He is responsible for the quartet painting on the vocal room wall. He is also involved in Debate, Forensics, Drama Club, Conquest Club and Optimist Club. Ann has been involved with sports at Pomona for four years. In ninth grade she participated in basketball, volleyball, and track. In her sophomore and junior years she was involved in basketball, swimming and tennis. During her Senior year she participated in basketball, volleyball, and tennis. Ann's favorite sport is basketball, and she will hopefully play basketball for a college. She has lettered in three sports for three years while at Pomona. Stefforn has been involved in sports with Pomona High School for four years. The three sports in which he has been involved were football, wrestling, and track. Stef- forn was awarded All-Conference and All-State his Junior year in track. Football is his favorite sport and next year he plans to attend The University of Kansas and play football there. Senior Job Survey During 1982, Seniors were asked by the Pantera Year- book Staff about jobs that they currently held. The job survey showed interesting and unusual jobs the Seniors at Pomona held. The most common jobs among Seniors were working at McDonalds and Target, both located at 80th and Wadsworth. Most of the Seniors surveyed held jobs during the school year. Many of the jobs were part time and students were not considering a career in the field. During Michelle Carter's senior year she worked at Babes and Brides as a floral designer, located in Lakewood. Michelle enjoys this type of work and plans a career in the field. McDonald's employees included: Mandy Bogan, Cathy Hanna, Sheri Loomis, Dorothy Shaughnessy, Stephanie Sewald, Cody Suer and Allison Wade. Not pic- tured: Susie Bruhn, Brad Crimmins, Kathy Curan, Paula Duncan, Chris Glaesel, Bob King, Jeff Nelson, Tom Orr, Martha Peterson, and Mona Regner. Manager: Buzz Selle. A...-ff by X A, During Garret Derouin's senior year at Pomona High School, he worked with the Arbor Dental Group as a computer programmer. He worked entering pa- tients' file information for a large group of dentists. The data was then used for future references. Garret is definately considering a career in this field. Throughout Andrea Grace's senior year, she worked for the Seattle Nut Company, located in Denver. The job involved performing as a sing- ing telegrammette. Andrea plans to continue with this job along with her planned career as a dance teacher. Target employees included: Tami Cymanski, Cheryl Francis, John Fuentes and Michelle Medrano. Not pictured: Todd Bridgewater, Linda Chapelle, Janine Evangilista, An- drea Grace, Sharon Kropp, Helene Meagher and Jeff Sanders. 80 SHE s Y' '54 TS: 'Yrs Q'- QS? izgfgy D ' e 0 l Il S e 7 Ea ,,i-Y ., I V5 , , ..:.f k -. The Panthers were undefeated in triangular meet competition and have won four big weekend meets. The victories at the Cherry Creek Relays, District 850 Relays, Jeffco Invitational, and Evergreen Invita- tional have provided a highly successful season. Additionally, the girls ended second place finishes at the Jefferson County League Relays and the Aurora Invitational. As the district track meet approached, the goal was to sell the farm and take whatever comes. A good showing in the district meet highlighted what had already been the most successful track season in the schools history. 219 X Gonfereh Football John Biner Mike Marquez Paul Schroeder .lim Sturgell Joe Vela .ia vyl Boys' Soccer Paul Coffey Jay Goodsell Curt Knittle Doug Root Us Q0nf6f-S onfef- og v X Baseball Jeff Alllson Girls Swlmmmg Hilary Barber 1...m.Lu I M ,,,,4 Q, ,A , ,, f Arrff jf .,,,, , ,,,V ,, ' , f V, x'1WQ,5L,mem, 5 A WI, .-,,, , HW, 1- f V yeh, ff ,mf I, .L-, - 4i , , r 7 -w --Vw .:..ff-ffwzff ::,,,,,,fw,-W M. ,,,- Q ZZ i I -mm Qi confereh Wrestling Bruce Branham Dave Freimuth Dan Martmez Todd Wiltse Joe Vela WW A' M-f-wwwnwnmw N nfer QXGO . ehc Girls' Track Patty Hanrahan Linda Jarboe Gina Schroeder Donna Waller Debbi Warner Michelle Wertz St Girls' 2 ., , . , fs Girls' Swimming Q QF' Basketball Qc' 3 1 V' A Hilary Barber Ann Scott Boys' Soccer i ' Jay Goodsell I ,151 2 4 6 33 KAW aff-iw W U Student 1 Senior Class Officers: Susle Batman - President Sue Chrlstenson - Vlce President This year's Student Council had a very productive year. Students staggering under huge boxes full of note- cards? A girl standing in the corner reciting a poem to a wall? A large room filled with obviously mad, pacing people? What else could these strange activities sig- nify but a Forensics meet! Forensics, both a club and a class involved students who wanted to compete with other schools throughout Colorado in various areas of oral communication. Mr. Cunningham and Mrs. Willis aided frantic students in finding cuttings and coach them after they learned them. This year's Forensics Team was quite inexperienced, yet they did quite well. They received three trophies in acting and many supe- rior and excellent ribbons at meets. Most of the team members agreed that Forensics gave confidence in speaking in front of large group of people. In spite of the long hours, the sacrifice of weekends, the frustration of waiting for notoriously slow coaches, all agreed that Forensics was a beneficial and worthwhile experience. The group consisted of: Doug Anderson, Dave Currie, Todd Gamboa, Andrea Grace, David Nanto, Claudia Switzer, and Andy Williamson. D bate Spotting a Debater is easy at a Debate Forensic meet they carry three volumes of encyclopedias, a year's worth of Time Magazines, and tree hundred note cards. When in debate, one must be able to keep one's temper calm and be able to present their side of the arguement logically with the least amount of emotion. Mr. Cunn- ingham coached these determined students through a year of frustration and satisfaction. As with the Forensics Team, the Debaters were not the most experienced, but in twelve tour- naments throughout the year, including District and State, they won eight trophies. Their repertoire ranged from the 40's era, singing about sentimental journeys, trains in Tennessee, and Mr. Sandman, to jazz and pop songs about Symphonic Sid, and how summer eyes were warm and blue. At times, the Vocal Room was near exploding. It's truly amazing how talkative sixteen women can be! These fashionable girls right out of the 40's were: Cindy Dow, Robyn Furst, Leah Klepteka, Jenny McDaniel, Melissa McFadden, Carol Meador, Michelle Medrano, Phyllis Murray, Raelene Osborn, Michelle Person, Christi Pieri, Theresa Terry, Michelle Tift, Stephanie Sewald, and Claudia Switzer. Special thanks and recognition goes to the accompanists Teresa Campbell, Todd Gam- boa, Jay Grauberger, Raelene Osborn, and Chris Runyan who helped to pull the group's sound together throughout the year. YH f....-i Sou ndsation For the members of Soundsations, in the past year there was never a dull moment. Long rehersals full of hard work were an every day occurence. From learning new dance steps to passing the mike around the room to scat, these vocalists were never bored That includes the watermelons, arguements over outfits, and joke-telling sessions. Soundsations, Pomona's top choir, sang Madrigals, popular music, and most of all, Jazz. Throughout the year, they were kept busy entertaining at elementary and jr high schools, and various community banquets and meetings. They also participated in the C.U. Madrigal Festival, Winter am Spring Concerts at the Arvada Center, and attended the State Jazz Contest. Within the school, Sounds sang to fellow students teachers, and parents at the National Honor Society Induction, Academic Awards, Athletic Awards, Baccalaureate, and quarterlj concerts. The final, and probably most important concert, was the Pops Concert, where all the seniors were given a chance te sing their hearts out with their own solos. Although the members of Soundsations never had a spare moment, the year they ex perienced will be one they will never regret, never quit laughing about, and definately never forget. This year's members were Beth Bassett, Lori Behunin, Jackie Black, Teresa Campbell, Dave Currie, Mike Ferraro, Todd Gamboa, Terri Garrison, Tode Gilstrap, Lon Glader, Andrea Grace, Dan Kelly, Sheila Knight, Kurt Krueger, Myla Mohler, Stacy Nabors, Tom Orr, Dean Reeves Joan Rimshaw, and Willis Scharmer. Pomona High School students danced all night Friday in the hope that a classmate might walk again. The high school's Chamber Choir organized a dance-athon to benefit Zant Scott, 16, who was hit by a car near the Arvada school in June. Scott, who was in a coma for two months, suf- fered brain stem injuries and fractures of his collarbone, leg and ribs. Scott, hospitalized since the accident, was released from Lutheran Medical Center for two hours to attend the dance. More than 100 screaming, jumping students greeted him as his mother and a friend guided his wheelchair into the school gym. Teresa Campbell, 17, president of the choir, said students hope to raise 55,000 to help defray some of Scott's medical bills. We want this to be a really big thing with the whole school involved, Campbell said. YDLlth POMONA PROBE Dance-a-thon By Chris Avery Pomona High students raised more than 83,000 at the recent dance-a-thon to benefit Zant Scott. The money will be used to pay for Zant's medical bills. Overall, the dance was deemed a complete success. Very spe- cial thanks should go to the Chamber Choir and Theresa Campbell for their time and effort in organizing the event. June 9, 1981 was the day Zant Scott was hit by a car and put into a coma for 2 months. After he recovered consciousness, he needed rehabilitation, and that meant money. That's where Theresa Campbell and Chamber Choir came in, they organized a dance-a- thon September 25. The dance was a total success and so many people showed up it rivaled even homecoming. In all, S3000 was raised. The dance also received nation-wide attention. 286 benefits Zant Besides the dance, school clubs have held bake sales and student council has been selling spirit and jinx dolls - yarn dolls in either Pomona's coiors or the colors of other area high school teams - to raise money for Scott, Without them, I don't know what I would have done, said Ginny M. Maloney, 38, of her son's classmates. Students began visiting Scott in the hospital's intensive care ward from the day he was injured and continue to arrive daily, Maloney said. Scott, who is learning to walk and talk again, isn't expected to be able to return to school for another year. Looking over the dancing crowd Friday, Ma- loney said, Many times I thought if Zant should die - and it was very close - there has to be a reason. And the only reason I could think of was that these kids would come to realize that life is precious. Zant Scott 5? if 555: -Sf gf , W ,ff 'Wake up, Zant' was their plea By Mark Herwlg Zant Scott of Arvada has a lot of friends. Scott, 16, who would have been a junior this year at Pomona High School, was hit by a car June 9 as he left work and his life and the lives of those close to him haven't been the same since. The accident put Scott into a coma for two months. He awoke in mid-August, an event partially brought on by the daily visits of his family and friends. Besides missing two months of his life, Scott also has a brain stem injury, broken leg, broken collar bone and borken rib to contend with. He is not expected to leave Lutheran Medical Center in Wheat Ridge for nearly a year. What makes this unfortunate ex- perience special is the outpouring of support Scott has received during his ordeal. While comatose, Scott's friends, many from the Pomona Chamber Choir of which Scottwasamembensetupshiftsduringthe summer to feed their friend, kept a diary at his bedside for comments and conversation in preparation for the time he awoke. And in that act, there was hope. Perhaps, as Scott's mother Ginny Maloney thinks, it was acts like the diary that helped bring her son out of the coma. Scott is now reading that diary. On a more spiritual note, Scott's friends entered his name in nearly every area prayer list. Every was done by this young man's friends to tilt the scales in his favor. And in a more practical gesture, Scott's friends donated a radio, flowers, reading material and even some spaghetti from his former place of employment. Who could ask for more? And as if all the moral support weren't enough, Scott's choir group is putting on a tConunued on P298 31 Dance-a-then to help Scott lConnnued1rom Page 1l dance-a-thon at Pomona High School start- ing at 8 p.m. Friday to raise money for his long and arduous rehabilitation period. Teresa Campbell, a Pomona senior and president of the Chamber Choir, has been organizing the event for nearly two months and hopes to raise 85,000 for the Zant Scott Fund. A regular dance with a 31.50 admission will start with the fund raiser, and last until 11:30 p.m. when only dance-a-thoners will be allowed to continue - or endure - until 8 a.m. Saturday. All proceeds from the dance will go to Scott's rehabilitation fund. Other support for the dance has come in the form of free refreshments provided by the McDona1d's restaurant at West 80 Ave- nue and Wadsworth Boulevard. All of this support has Scott's mother counting her blessings and reflecting on the effect it has had on her family and son's friends. The kids played tapes of different voices and people to Zant saying 'wake up Zant, wake up.' That is kind of neat coming from today's generation, said Maloney. Some of the roughest, toughest kids in school came to see Zant, boys and girls alike. The experience made the kids more aware of how delicate life is, she said.- Without their support, I would have felt very, very alone, she said. 287 f ff -N.. H, W 1' 318 95 if L f .wi . .. Our creative and very capable Yearbook staff has done its best to put as many memories on these pages as possible. I would like to give a special thanks to Mrs. Debra Jacobson, our advisor, for skillfully and extremely patiently helping all of us. Also, thank you to Murray Kula, our Taylor Representative, for all his talent and skills. TO THE CLASS OF '82 May you have the power to make your wishes and dreams all come true.
