Under the shadows of its spires pointing upward to the stars, Pomonans were born . . . and lived . . . and died. From that church the toll of bells announced the joy of married couples, the departure of the dead . . . the glory of Easter . . . and the joy of Christmas. Within that church Pomonans shared with their eight succeeding pastors the holiest, the happiest and the most sacred moments of their lives. Unscored upon in pre-league play, the Spartan machine pounced upon the St. Francis Kni hts, dumping them 27-6. Homecoming at San Ga riel Mission nearly ended the Spartan record as the spirited Pioneers came within one point of down- ing the Spartans. Only the invincible Spartan spirit saved the day with one extra point the margin, 15-12. St. john Vianney became the next Spartan scapegoat as the Daymen rolled over the Nobles 52-19. Stars got into Spartan eyes when they met Mary Star of the Sea and eked out a 14-14 tie. PCH had to come from behind in the fourth quarter to tie the game. HUIU CHGEHS FHHEU Despite a disappointing 7-24 season record, the Po- mona Catholic Spartans did uncover a few bright spots while playing under a blanket of hard luck. Junior Ron Ciora broke loose during league play to nail down a guard spot on the second All-League tea111. Ron led the team in total points with 65 for a 6.5 league average. Senior Cisco Carlos paced the varsity with 307 total points for the season and 63 during league competition, although he missed one loop game via an illness. Coach Cal Stewart's five established a new single game scoring record while rolling by St. Francis of Riverside 80-51. It seemed that the squad couldn't miss against the visiting Bulldogs as Carlos, Dave Keser and Guy Belcore all hit in double figures. Keser came into his own toward the close of the season, leading the squad in scoring the final three league games. Senior playmaker Dave Sullivan discovered it was more fun scoring as he led the Spartans past the usu- ally tough Faculty, 64-45, with a 15-point outburst. It was the second consecutive win over the Faculty, and you might recall that Sullivan was instrumental in the 1957 varsity win, also. Other bright spots include Belcore's game-winning lay-ups with 14 seconds remaining as the Spartans nipped Mary Star, 20-19, during the League Carnival, and Mike Aparicio's 17-point output as the Spartans whipped Calexico, 47-43. DEL- '. 1 88 UP AND OVER goes Freshman Dave Clark as he reaches upward toward the school record. BHSEBHLL In '57 baseball play the Spartans secured for themselves a three-way tie for second place in the league with Mary Star and St. Francis, losing only four games, two to the champion Monarchs, 6-2 and 5-1, and once each to Mary Star, 8-3, and St. Francis, 7-2. Leading batter for the locals last year was Jean Wad- dingham with a .312 season average and a .417 league average. Chucking for the Varsity in 1957 were Dave Keser, Ray Guillen, Cisco Carlos and Terry Stallard. Stal- lard has the distinction of pitching one of the three no- hitters in the ,57 20-30 Tournament. Pre-league contests in '58 found the Spartans dropping seven and winning five. Pomona Catholic posted decisive wins over Colton, Azusa, West Covina, and Pomona Col- lege Frosh. As we go to press, the Varsity has defeated two Parochial League teams in as many outings. The Spartans triumphed over St. John Vianney, 7-1, and edged the Monarchs, 3-2. This was the first time Pomona Catholic defeated Mater Dei in the '57-'58 athletic year. The Fallbrook Warriors dumped the Spartans in the only game of the drowned out 20-30 Tournament. At the top of the achievement list is the Santa Ana Relays title. Paced by Seniors Bob Bartel and John Kelly, the Spartan thinclads won the final two events to capture the small schools crown by one point over a strong Tustin squad. As this was written, Coach Rod Long's crew had already taken the measure of Fontana, Pius X, West Covina, Mary Star, Webb, Upland and Mission, and was aiming for the league crown taken last year by Mater Dei. The chief threat for this seasonls title was the powerful St. Francis Knights. Q g.'iaQ'?9 5, ji 1 ,f , 5 , :, . K V . QW SPARTAN DASHMAN BOB BARTEI. puts on a burst MILER JOHN KELLY XVINS AGAIN!
