M E RD WLMKSM FOR WO .y f W Midway in the month of September when everyone is wondering who will compete in the World Series, and the football season is getting underway, boys and girls from eighteen outlying communities gather in the green-walled auditorium of Pomona Catholic to begin another year of formal education. Enkindled within this group of students is a spark which will soon develop into a glowing fire known as school spirit. It is this spirit that moves with us through Pomona Catholic from 8:30 to 3:00 each day. We know this spirit in the hustled chapel call each morning and in the classes, assemblies, rallies, and track meets. We know this spirit on Friday nights as we yell our throats dry watching our Spartans match forces with rival teams. This spirit is the driving force that manifests itself in the mission drive, in the Homecoming dance, in the student- sponsored Fiesta, and even, if you will, in the screeching of brakes on Williams Street at the end of the school day. School Spirit is that something intangible, yet intensely real, that is poured into day after day of our school life. It is this spirit that the Fidelian staff has selected as a theme for this year's annual. The 1956PFidelian salutes the spirit of Pomona Catholic! Tie magnificent spirit of this group imparted to the entire student body an awareness of the fine traditions of the school and bolstered their school spirit. The Class of '57 was in the front rank when it came to speech and drama. Seniors held monopoly on the Spring operetta, the Christmas play, and participated successfull in inter bouts. STUDENT CO VERNMENT nzoltlv tomorrow is CI'llf6H.S' today by training in tlernocraqi STUDENT BODY UFFICERS foster unity through competent leadership. PAUL CARINGELLA. ASB president, addressing a student assembly EFFICIENT OFFICERS, Rosemary Sabel, secretaryg and Alban Moreno, vice-president, examine agenda for the next student assembly. Under the leadership of Paul Caringella, ASB President, the Student Council laid the founda- tion for a successful school year. As their first assignment, they welcomed 250 freshmen on the opening day of school, and conducted them through orientation activities in the first week of school. Magazine and Fidelian sponsorship drives, and an ASB Fiesta were a few of its successful projects. Taking an interest in the spiritual ad- vancement of PCH, the council backed the Prin- cipal, Sister Mary Benilda, in obtaining permission from Father Thomas P. English to have daily Mass celebrated in the chapel. It became obvious this year that the student government constitu- tion drawn up five years ago for a small enroll- ment school became obsolete and badly in need of revision. A committee headed by senior members of the council directed discussion groups in the various homerooms which finally resulted in a completely reorganized constitution. The student government this year enjoyed the very able lead- ership of oihcers: Paul Caringella, presidentg Rose- mary Sabel, secretaryg Alban Moreno, vice-presi- dent. T DEAR S T AFF' Here it is-the last deadline. I never thought the day would come when I'd regret turning in the last bit of copy, but for some reason this time that old sadistic satisfaction is missing. We've had our ups and downs of course, but we've had quite a few kicks too. Looking over the odds and ends here in the Lance file I've come across quite a few mementos of hectic days long past . . . a collection of thirty-five assorted unprint- able poems by Tony Rogers, a number of short and likewise unprintable philosophical essays by Dave O'Dell, three lipsticks and a bottle of nail polish fwomenlj, Caringella's March Sports page dummy fIt's four inches wide and thirteen inches longj, ten sheets of transparent pink typing paper, 5 pens, 7 pencils, 5 erasers, 11 sticks of chewing gum Qoopslj ... As you turn the pages of the Fidelian you will recall the many happy things that have occurred to us, things that are already slipping into the shadows. It is these moments that the staff of the Fidelian attempted to preserve. We are proud to have been selected as historians of the school for the year 1956-57. Every page of the yearbook represents the efforts of many people, and long after-school sessions for a troop of untiring headline and copywriters, typists and layout artists: Tom Bernier, Floyd McCready, Carol Riley, Colleen Wilson, Bertha Thompson, Linda Kasper, Sally McDermott. To the members of the faculty who spent many hours working with us, we extend a sincere God bless you. To the indomitable journalism class, con- tributors par excellence, and to all who have made this annual possible through cooperation in the sponsorship drive, we express our sincere ap- preciation. CUPlD'S HELPER Once a Weeping Willow stood by a stream, Its scenic beauty was like a dream. She hung low, but gracefully stoodg She longed to tell her secrets If only she could. Her body was scarred, but for a good cause, For you see, when lovers would walk, There they would pause. To express their love, they would often cut deep, But she, very understanding, would often still weep. Her body held many sayings, but always she knew The best-loved one was that saying, I love you. Madame Willow stands by her stream to this dayg She is Cupid's Helper, as you'll hear many say. - Ellen Anne Tierney WITHIN THE COVERS of L, Camino Real, Spanish students dis- I cover the splendors of old Mexico. PUE T R Y A WARD WINNERS LOVE Innocent and inspiring as an infant's cry, Scenic and simdple as the summer sky, Melodious an merry as the song of a bird, Tender and true as a mother's word, Strong and stable as a martyr's belief, Beautiful and bright as an autumn leaf, Pure and perfect as heaven above, Only this then can be love. - Shirley Larivee GOD AND THE SEA Quiet is the beautiful dark sea, As it ripples slightly in the night. The honor for this falls on Him, The One above who makes everything right It obeys Him with gleeg For it knows He is the one with might. And rolls swiftly, as you see, A beautiful sight at night. - Sandra Carlson YOUTH The test of youth is the fight he makes, How hard he daily triesg The way the bumps and knocks he takes Without a lot of sighs. Any student can sit back and smile When all the answers he does know, But the one who works to make the trial Will win the fight o'er any foe. - Sue Stevens XXX .xx - X . N . Belt KE TBALL cagcrs set new mark l957 was a banner year for Pomona Catholic basketball as the varsity swept to a record seasonal total of nine, the previous mark was six set by the 1955 tive. Coached by Mr. Cal Stewart, a smooth cage tutor from the Southwest, the team included four vic- tories in league play in their total. The squad faced rough going in the early sea- son, running into more experienced foes, but the team jelled at new year to play top ball. High marks were reached in wins against Mater Dei il-42, St. Francis 45-40, Mary Star 48-40, and St. john Vianney 55-25. Probably the acme of the season was attained February 22, when for the hrst time in live years the varsity emerged on the long end of the court against the faculty. This year's aggregation was led by Mike Lassal- ette, a 6-Z senior who was the unanimous choice of the Parochial I.eague's coaches as center and was tabbed as the loops Most Valuable Player. Las- salctte was later named to the all CIF's small school second string. 7 'Tx MIKE LASSALFTTIQ rams one through the hoop against St, john Vianney. How admirably he has succeeded is evident from our tremendous athletic plant which is one of the most adequate in the Parochial League and probably the best in Southern California. Each year he organizes the barbecue which is the only source of revenue for the athletic fund. For this end he must rally the support of parishioners and townsmen alike. Under the leadership of President, George Thoemmes, the Junior Class of 1957 began to shape itself into a closely-knit group of upperclassmen, in spite of their fluc- tuating fortunes in acquiring permanent faculty advisers. A class gift of a rostrum for the school auditorium marked the first of many expressions of school spirit which prevailed in the junior Class. Another evidence of this loyalty was the performance of the junior Class Booster Club whose behind-the-scene support of games and rallies infused into the students the urge to participate enthusi- astically in school activities. At Shamrock time, a junior-sponsored Saint Patrick dance increased the tempo of school activities, which served, as did the junior-Senior Prom, as a royal farewell for the Seniors. The latter was a truly great social if not completely a financial success. Stepping into the shoes of their spirited predecessors, the Class of '58 aimed at the repetition of unparalleled achievements of theliynamic Class of '57. N MW 7 'F w s .fu . E I l r f,- LEM Sl?
