ROBERT M, STORER v, 2. ,, 1? , fo M DEDICATION To Mr. and Mrs. Strong whose special understanding of our form resulted in friendship, and whose steadying influence and interest gained our respect, we gratefully dedicate this book. lgolllfffr We bend our pens in tribute to Pomfret's Thoreau. lvlr. Cooper-Ellis, who had the patience and the knowl- edge to expand our understanding: whose shared philosophy has become a part of our wisdom: and whose hope- ful views made our futures come alive with possibilities. We salute Coach Mansfield, whose love of sports and sportsmanship brought forth in each of us something of the best we had to giveg whose example of skill and determination made those qualities stand high in our heartsg whose kind attention to us as individuals taught us the value of confidence. LEAGUE BASEBALL Talk flowed fast in early spring about how the Ionians were certain to crush the Achaeans on the diamond. No real predictions were set forth, but most forecasters claimed the games would be cut and dried . Even after the season's opener went to the Achaeans, the Ionian sages were confident. But superior hitting blasted the Achaeans to victory over a vastly more efficient Ionian infield. The season closed, May 28, when the Blackshirts clinched the series, and the League Cup, by hitting a l3 to 8 victory over the Redshirts. Within the lengthened season, the Achaeans took 6 games, the Ionians 3, with one tie. The Ionians found compensation when shortstop Dodger Hoag received the Prize Day League Baseball Award. Despite lack of experience as a govern- ing group, the Council achieved ends that had eluded former Cabinets and the like. The year's trend was for a more liberal school policy. This is borne out by the bulk of the Council's actions-setting up a new discipline system entailing a Records Com- mittee, granting Fifth Form smoking privi- lege, forming a Dormitory Committee, adding the first amendment to the School Constitu- tion, opening meetings to the student body. and giving all students the store privilege at Pugr' sixty any time. Molding a discipline system present- ed the year's greatest challenge, The fact that the Council not only succeeded in meeting this problem but also equally complex ques- tions was a tribute to its own ambition as well as to the tactful guidance of President Boyer. The Council of 'Sl fathered many tangible measures. But its greatest strength lay in that it was respected as the school's govern- ing body. Interest at all times ran high, whether it was in Bricken's wish that he and Spike could go skiing before dawn, or in Bouge's Bureau for the betterment of working condition, among the Pomfret masses. Second Pic- Third Picture: Soutter, Whitney, Wilde, Lee, Not shown are: Mallory, THE DORM ASSISTANTS The dorm assistant's job is probably the least appre- ciated in the school. It en- tails supervision of uninhib- ited Second and Third Form- ers who don't know what respect and order mean, and more mature Fourth and Fifth Formers who don't believe in these values. But the experience gained in the handling of people is invaluable to those Seniors elected to the job. This makes their trials and tribulations worth-while. Not until late in the Spring term did Pretzels. prodded by Mr. Dentler, realize that he. Ducky. Bob Storer and Sam had a class book to put out. They had spent most of the first half year setting policies, and had left the real work for later. Ducky was forced to resign his position for reasons of health to Fat Mat, only to return later. The really big event of the year was the Chaffee-Pomfret combo production of Down ln The Valley , a smash-musi- cal success, with Rog Bensinger as naive hero, Amory King as the masterful villain. A combined performance with Brear- ley enlivened the May entertainment fare. the big number on the program a double-group rendition of How Lovely ls Thy Dwelling Place , by Brahms.
