Stage Mazinger THE PLAY On Friday evening, February 8th, the Dramatic Club presented The Dictator . Witli the aid of a musical program, by the Cflee and Mandolin Clubs, the club entertained many guests and alumni who had come to attend the Annual Sixth Form Dance. The Dictator , a play in three acts, by Richard Harding Davis, was selected by the Dramatic Club because of the genuine humor prevalent throughout the play and because of the interest of the plot. The Dramatic Club wishes through the Class Book to thank Mr. Brown for his patient and untiring assistance in its behalf. The plot of the play concerns two men, Brook Travers and Simpson, his valet, who, having acciden- tally killed a cabman in New York boarded the steamer Bolivar bound for Central America. 1929 assumed names of Steve Hill and Jim Dodd, they travel to Porto Banos, a city in San Manana, Central America. On the boat Steve meets Lucy Sheridan who tells him that she, in an act of charity, is going to Porto Banos to marry the Rev. Arthur Bostwick. He also meets Colonel Bowie, the new consul, who is informed at port that a revolution has been started and that he will be shot if he touches Porto Banos soil. He sells his consulship to the unsuspecting Steve swearing that no one will know him in Porto Banos. Duffy, the detective, who is also on board is looking for Brooke Travers and valet, but relieves the two men by saying he made his arrest. Steve Hill and Jim Dodd take over the consulship at the office in Porto Banos. Juanita, who once loved Bowie rushes into the office and at once realizes she has been deceived but says she will not betray Steve if he agrees to set free Duffy's prisoner, who is the missioner Bostwick, whom she loves. After she has left, Duffy appears and tells how Bostwick was rescued by his parishioners. Duffy re- fuses to leave without capturing Brooke Travers. Steve then tells Duffy that Travers is coming to the consul's office. Bowie, lured by Steve's message, enters and Duffy arrests him as Travers. Iuanita rushes in and tells Lucy that she must fight her if she wishes to marry Bostwick. Arthur Bostwick suddenly appears and proposes to Juanita in the presence of Lucy and Steve. Lucy is then free to marry Steve whom she really loves. At this point General Campos enters with his soldiers and says that they all will be shot. However, the American Marines save them. The Captain of the Marines tells that it is feared that a Mr. Travers and valet have been murdered by a cabman and that their friends had sent a detective to look for them. Steve is overjoyed and identifies himself. The party is surprised by cheering outside, and Steve realizes that his revolution has taken place and he has become Dictator of San Manana.
