Selection of materials. sewing. clothing design. and good taste are all part of the training for home management. Proper selection of foods, healthful diets. and cooking are studied. Then, too. the girls are taught how to serve a colorful and attractive meal. ln this way they learn how to be a perfect hostess and gracious guest. a most imf portant thing in anv womans life. Household budgeting, shopping for the home. and child care are other subjects vitally important to everv home. The Annual ivleigs County Style Show gives the students a chance to see what girls in other schools have done. and is a motivating factor in inspiring them to greater accomplishment in this field. Since every business institution is a law unto itself. it is literally impossible to train pupils for a specific office job. The broad business fundamentals and practices-the elementary tools of business such as bookkeeping, typewriting. shorthand, business law. salesmanship, and business arithmetic are offered in this department. A student who has mastered these tools can soon adapt him- self to the routine of a particular office job. Then. too. there is the objective of business education for personal use. The farmer. the housewife, the merchant, or salesman will be better fitted to do his work in an efficient and businessflike way if he applies the fundamentals taught in the commercial classes. I5

MANUAL TRAINING Skilled Hands Training the hand is equally as important as training the mind to do abstract thinking. Many a school boy will spend most of his life following one of the trades. Skill with the hand means a livelihood to such a youth, Manual training calls for no little amount of figuring and so mathematics is brought into play. Coordination of hand and mind. self-expression. and ability to make minor repairs about the home are some of the lasting benefits of industrial arts education. The school carnivals. staging of plays. and decorating for parties and dances require the services of boys from the manual training classes. Many of the games of skill played at the Harvest Festival were made by the boys in the manual training department. 10
