Since every business institution is a law unto itself. it is literally impossible to train pupils for a specific office job. The broad business fundamentals and practices-the elementary tools of business such as bookkeeping, typewriting. shorthand, business law. salesmanship, and business arithmetic are offered in this department. A student who has mastered these tools can soon adapt him- self to the routine of a particular office job. Then. too. there is the objective of business education for personal use. The farmer. the housewife, the merchant, or salesman will be better fitted to do his work in an efficient and businessflike way if he applies the fundamentals taught in the commercial classes. Selection of materials. sewing. clothing design. and good taste are all part of the training for home management. Proper selection of foods, healthful diets. and cooking are studied. Then, too. the girls are taught how to serve a colorful and attractive meal. ln this way they learn how to be a perfect hostess and gracious guest. a most imf portant thing in anv womans life. Household budgeting, shopping for the home. and child care are other subjects vitally important to everv home. The Annual ivleigs County Style Show gives the students a chance to see what girls in other schools have done. and is a motivating factor in inspiring them to greater accomplishment in this field. Many a school boy will spend most of his life following one of the trades. Skill with the hand means a livelihood to such a youth, Manual training calls for no little amount of figuring and so mathematics is brought into play. Coordination of hand and mind. self-expression. and ability to make minor repairs about the home are some of the lasting benefits of industrial arts education. The school carnivals. staging of plays. and decorating for parties and dances require the services of boys from the manual training classes. Many of the games of skill played at the Harvest Festival were made by the boys in the manual training department. 10 HCTNITI ES Q5 QE K 155' A THE BAND The Beat ol the Dru ITIS A shrill whistle-J flourish of the baton-the drums sound off-strike up the band! The orchestra. under the direction of Mr. Willis Aleshire. is an essential part of many school programs and entertainments. The Annual Band-Orchestra Concert in April was the high point of the year for these musical organizations. The Com- mencement Program will be the last time members of the 1939 Orchestra will play together. THE STUDENTS RR AR flag Qbarage Of 193 9 Pomeroy Pukffic library SENIDR CLASS I-IISTDRV lt was indeed something of a thrill to take that front row in assembly, to occupy a seat in the senior study hall had long been our ambition, After a few deep breaths of satisfaction we were caught in the swirl of activities that made this last year in Pomeroy the shortest and happiest we ever experienced. Tradition was broken early in the year when Thomas Hennessy was chosen class president, the first boy ever to hold this high office in our class. Ruth Vifill Lambert was elected vice-president. and Ruth Morgan was voted to occupy the important ofhce of secretary-treasurer. The Harvest Carnival proved a welcome and profitable diversion from our school routine. The Christmas Cantata presented by the Senior Ciirls' Glef: Club was well received by Pomeroy music lovers, The Cilee Club concert in April was a most colorful Xl0tx1rXN, l-llf-NNPSSY, NVIIL, eventkthe girls wearing every conceivable pastel shade of evening gown. the boys dressed in white flannels and blue coats, XVe were the guests of the Juniors at the 1930 Junior-Senior Prom. The music certainly was tops for dancing. The thrilling balloon dance was the climax of the party. The week following the Prom the Senior Play cast began rehearsing their play. May was crowded with activity for our classmates. The Senior Play was pre- sented May ll. Soon after we began preparations for the Baccalaureate Program May Zl. Class Night all too soon arrrived and it seemed no time until we received our diplomas at Commencement May 25. Dr. Einar A. Hansen of Ohio University delivered the address and Mr. Rhodes and Mr. Vvfhite presented the diplomas to one hundred seniors. ln l97v5 we were the largest class ever to enter Junior High, being one hundred and fortyfnine strong. Our freshman oicers were Dorothy Jane Vvfard. president: Frances Elberfeld, vice-president, and YVarner French, secretary-treasurer. A Weiner roast at the Hoskin Parm concluded the social activities of our freshman year. The following year we were privileged to enter Senior High but were relegated to back seats in the Senior auditorium and were confined to the top floor of the build- ing our sophomore year. We chose Maxine Roush Dixon to be president. Warner French was elected vice-president and Kathryn Legar was voted secretary-treasurer. Wlaen we returned to school the next fall, our number reduced to one hundred and eight, we were faced with the annual problem of the Juniors+the Junior-Senior Prom. Witli the assistance of Miss Houser and her faculty assistants we developed the Jonquil Night Club. A rendezvous replete with entertainment. The floor show was a novel innovation which served to distinguish the l938 Junior-Senior Prom from its predecessors. Vwfe worked like troupers but agreed it was well worth the labor expended. lt is with a heavy heart that we are forced to say farewell to our Alma Mater.
