gkcfricaf gngineering NE of the most dynamic departments at Poly, Electrical En- gineering has led the nation in formulating a modern cur- riculum. Its staff of over 70 faculty members was the first to insti- tute a unihed transistor and vacuum tube course. Because it found available texts to be insufficient, the department encouraged the formation of a large publications section at the Institute which aids faculty members in the development and publication of more adequate books. They are published as part of a Polytechnic Series. Two have been published so far and three more are being processed. The department has also successfully instituted an Elec- trical Engineering Honors Program which allows exceptional students to pursue an accelerated program of greater depth than is usual. Speaking of the department's overall progress, Dr. John G. Truxal, the department head, said, '4We are fortunate in being able to couple a high quality faculty with a high quality student- the quality of the education followsf' ,--.- . John G. Truxal Chairman W ft ' My Left to right: Professors Giordano, Angelo, Ettenberg, Rosenthal, Greensman, Macovski, Strauss, Clark, Kaplan, Whang, Deutsch, Goldstone. 22

pAyaica OLY'S Physics Department has exhibited a marked expansion in the past twenty years, Its faculty has increased from seven members, in 1939, to the present total of 44. This growth has been accompanied by proportionately larger student enroll- ments, the availability of more courses in varied Helds and an in- crease in the size and quality of facilities. Over the last two decades, discoveries such as the tapping of nuclear energy, the opening of solid state physics, and the in- creased scientific rewards of basic research, have popularized the Physics Department, bringing it to the attention of many capable young men. It has engendered their acceptance by remaining abreast of current developments in the Held and maintaining a vital curriculum. The department maintains a flexibility to match that of modern physics itself. Five years ago, because the need had arisen, the entire under- graduate curriculum was reorganized. New courses in specialized fields have been added yearly to the catalogue and standard courses brought up to date to complement this modern academic back- ground which the department provides. Chairman John J. Dropkin Left to right: Professors Post, Schleunig, Isihara, Camp, Juretschkc, Kjelchaas. 24 l l
