Cizemica ngineering AND-OVER-FOOT expansion of Chemistry since the turn of the century has been responsible for the creation of a new and distinct entity: Chemical Engineering. At first the two departments coexisted within one broad framework, but in 1931 Chemical Engineering received departmental status and at the same time wliittled its five year curriculum down to four. Since that time many students have taken advantage of the Hne faculty and facilities which Poly places at their disposal. The size of the classes alone establishes it as one of the major divisions of the Polytechnic, but size does not tell the whole story. The wide- spread popularity which the department enjoys can be traced to the purposes which it serves. To one segment of the student pop- ulation it provides a firm background upon which to build a career in industry. To the other it acts as a steppingstone to creative, vital, graduate work in this particularly dynamic field of Science and Engineering. Donald F. Othmcr Chairman Left to right: Professors Hase, Naphthali, Benenati, Conti. Left to right: Professors Schurig, Othmcr, Bruins Chu 20

Robert B. B. Moorman Chairman Gui! Engineering U HE department of Civil Engineering was a thriving entity when Electrical, Metallurgical, and Aeronautical Engineering were not even dreams. Despite this long tradition, the department has always remained abreast of current developments in the Held and stands ready to incorporate them into the curriculum. In the old Poly, the department's plans were seriously ham- pered by lack of room. At 333 Jay Street, however, the civil en- gineers have their own three story building which affords them ample space for their many activities. This allowed them to imple- ment and expand laboratories in sanitary, soil, hydraulic, and high- way engineering. New facilities for research in photoelasticity and photogrammetry were added to keep the department in step with every phase of civil engineering.
