Ckemidfrg HE history of the Chemistry Department is highlighted by two major events. In 1885 the scientific curriculum of the Polytechnic was divided into the engineering and applied chem- istry courses, In 1935 the chemistry curriculum was further sub- divided into the separate Chemistry and Chemical Engineering departments. Along with these subdivisions have come the devel- opment, and Finally, the establishment, of a department devoted to basic study in the chemical sciences. Extensive research, conducted by the various divisions of the graduate school has developed an undergraduate curriculum that embodies the latest concepts through increased understanding of fundamentals. It is not the goal of the Chemistry Department to provide an education that will become obsolete with every new discovery, but to provide future chemists with the ability to make these discoveries themselves. Cizemica ngineering AND-OVER-FOOT expansion of Chemistry since the turn of the century has been responsible for the creation of a new and distinct entity: Chemical Engineering. At first the two departments coexisted within one broad framework, but in 1931 Chemical Engineering received departmental status and at the same time wliittled its five year curriculum down to four. Since that time many students have taken advantage of the Hne faculty and facilities which Poly places at their disposal. The size of the classes alone establishes it as one of the major divisions of the Polytechnic, but size does not tell the whole story. The wide- spread popularity which the department enjoys can be traced to the purposes which it serves. To one segment of the student pop- ulation it provides a firm background upon which to build a career in industry. To the other it acts as a steppingstone to creative, vital, graduate work in this particularly dynamic field of Science and Engineering. Donald F.
