Ckemidfrg HE history of the Chemistry Department is highlighted by two major events. In 1885 the scientific curriculum of the Polytechnic was divided into the engineering and applied chem- istry courses, In 1935 the chemistry curriculum was further sub- divided into the separate Chemistry and Chemical Engineering departments. Along with these subdivisions have come the devel- opment, and Finally, the establishment, of a department devoted to basic study in the chemical sciences. Extensive research, conducted by the various divisions of the graduate school has developed an undergraduate curriculum that embodies the latest concepts through increased understanding of fundamentals. It is not the goal of the Chemistry Department to provide an education that will become obsolete with every new discovery, but to provide future chemists with the ability to make these discoveries themselves.
