eronauficaf gngineering T IS almost 20 years now since the Aeronautical Engineering Department became an integral part ol' the Polytechnic, its first degrees being awarded in 1941. Since that time, biplanes have passed away, propeller craft have given in to jets and rockets, and the sky has been removed as the limit. The Aeronautical Department has grown and progressed from an overgrown fan, long, long ago, to some of the Finest supersonic and hypersonic windtunnels available to a college, from ideal areodynamies to magnetoaerodynamics and more. Along the way the Applied Me- chanics division was added to the Graduate portion of the depart- ment and in 1959 a master's option in Astronautics was offered in conjunction with Electrical Engineering. Since its inception, Aeronautics has accounted for the bulk of Poly's research budget. The Aeronautics Department has on its staff some of the Finest men in their Helds. Because of their proximity to modern developments these men are constantly bring- ing the latest material, viewpoints, and techniques into depart- mental courses. Ckemidfrg HE history of the Chemistry Department is highlighted by two major events. In 1885 the scientific curriculum of the Polytechnic was divided into the engineering and applied chem- istry courses, In 1935 the chemistry curriculum was further sub- divided into the separate Chemistry and Chemical Engineering departments. Along with these subdivisions have come the devel- opment, and Finally, the establishment, of a department devoted to basic study in the chemical sciences. Extensive research, conducted by the various divisions of the graduate school has developed an undergraduate curriculum that embodies the latest concepts through increased understanding of fundamentals. It is not the goal of the Chemistry Department to provide an education that will become obsolete with every new discovery, but to provide future chemists with the ability to make these discoveries themselves.
