The season saw the Parrots defeat Washington 6-0 in the Prep Pageant. In the first game of the regular season they downed Lowell, their traditional rival, 27-0. This was Poly's eighteenth straight win over the Indians. The Parrots had their fou ndation rocked from under them in the next two games as both the Fighting Irish of Sacred Heart and the Wildcats of St. Ignatius defeated them 6-0. The Red and Black, realizing their backs were up against the wall after these two loses fought back savagely to gain a berth in the play-offs. The Axtmen downed every tea m they met for the remainder of the season. They trounced Lincoln 31-6, Galileo 53-0, Mission 19-O, Balboa 20-6, and Washington 39-13. End of the seasontally showed that the Parrots were leaders on total offense and defense for 1957 with a total of 189 points in eight games as opposed to 37 points scored against them. The regular season ended with a six win, two loss record. In the semi-finals the Poly team nat the S. I. Wildcats once again. This time the tables were turned as the Parrots put on a fierce blocking and tackling game to dump their opponents 28-7. Then came the fateful Thanksgiving Day game with Balboa going on to win its first football championship in its history. Coaches Milt Axt and Pete MacPhail did a fine job in rallying the team on after it had been beaten twice in a row. Due to their drive and leadership, the team bounced back to end the season with a creditable record. JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL TEAM ROW I:H. Woo, K. Minemoto, H. Tokyo, M. Bessa, A. Baez, H. The loss of two All-Clty stars, Dave Dawson and Hans Schuster, from the previous year's team was sorely felt. Composed largely of sophomores and junlors, the Red andBIack booters lacked the ex- perlence lt needed to make the clty play-offs. Losing all of thelr games but two put the team in seventh place at the end ofthe season. The Par- rots toppled the St. lgnatlus Wildcats, 3-0 and tled the Lowell Indians 1-1, Though ending up far from top position, the Poly team made each opponent flght hard for every goal. Notice the enthusiasm on the faces of all four. Though the Parrots had a very poor season, all was not lost as their O-8 record may indicate. The bright side of the season showed outfielder and pitcher Bob Lane winding up as the AAA hitting champ with a fabulous .487. For this reason Lane is a top candidate for All-city . The most important factor, derived from this past season, was the valuable experience gained by the many sophomores and juniors who studded the team. This fact should put a bright spot on the seasons to come for Poly sackers. Two seniors doing well for themselves were Steve Ferrera, who wound up in fourth place for the AAA batting crown, and Claude Woolwine who displayed some fine pitching for the Black and Red cause. Title Displaying great depth, the Parrot cinder- men wound up in first place in the Round- Robin, and are favored to win the city cham- pionship also. The season for this strength is due to such top tracksters as all-around star, Jesse Sirles, who is the top broad jumper in the city, by continually leaping in the 22 feet bracket. He is also a fine point getter in the pole vault and high jump. Andy Loobey is one of the leading distance runners in Northern California, by constantly running a 4.28 mile. Also tops in the distant events are John Rockett and Bob Kane. Leading hurdler and ex-gridder star is hust- Iing Frank Lipkins. He is followed by other rocks of strength and point getters such as sprinters, Alex and Ellis Jenkins, high jump- ers Nat Jackson, George Hamilton, Shelby Dirks, and giant weight men headed by Al Marinai, Tony Pisciotta, and Rich Darns. These and others are the men responsible for winning every meet in AAA competition in the league events. The 130's are duel meet champions and if desire prevails, they will probably be city champs also. They are paced by Emmett Shannon, who has unofficially broken the city record in the 70 yard high hurdles, and Wel- ton Smith who broadjumps22 feet and 8 inches, runs an 8 flat 75 yard dash, and anchor s the relay team.
