PETERSON l00KS T0 THE FUTURE Mr. Peterson says: -'The spirit of Polytechnic High School is well defined in a quotation by James Bryant Conant, a former United States Ambassador to WestGermany. when he described the pur- poses of education. He stated. 'The primary concern of American education today is . . . to cultivate in the largest number of our future citizens an appreciation both of the responsibilities and the benefits which come to them because they are Americans and free! Since 1895 Polytechnic High School has given students of San Francisco an oppor- tunity to develop skills and acquire knowledge which would contribute to their development as useful citizens. The form of student gov- ernment and activities has been developed through the years with the objective of pro- viding an opportunity for the practice of the rights and privileges which mature citizens enjoy. X1 e are proud of the graduates of Poly- technic. They have assumed their rightful place in the community and many are lead- ers in our local, state, and national govern- nicnt. We hope that the members of the classes oi January 1956 and june 1957 will carry on in this tradition. To them go our wishes for .1 rich and full life.
