SUTHERLAFQD MISS EDITH BELL R THOVAS . ARTHUR SUTHERLAND . GRANVILLE THOMAS HOWARD THOMPSON .WARREN TELFER The Polytechnic 1957 is dedi- cated to those who are leaving this school after many years of devoted service. Words cannot adequately express the feelings ofthose past and present Polyites who haye been instructed, guided, and helped by Miss Edith Bell, Mr. Arthur Sutherland, Mr. Granville Thomas, and Mr. How- ard Thompson. To say that they will be missed is a masterpiece of tuiderstatement. Yet, it is the simple truth. On behalf of the Polytechnic High School faculty, student body, and alumni, the staff of the '57 yearbook would like to wish the retiring teachers many years of happiness, health, and good fortune. Thank you and God bless you. FORWARD: The Polytechnic 1957 expresses the theme of the new Polytechnic High School. . .the school that is going modern. On the second floor the new Lux Electronics and Science Laboratory is nearing completion and will soon be in use, training the scientists of tomorrow. The school bond issue was passed, part of which will be utilized to modernize the building. 1957 has found Polytechnic going mod- ern in many ways. This year the yearbook goes modern, too, symbolizing the new Polytechnic growing out of the traditions of the past. Turn the pages, take a look. . .as usual, Polyites are keep- ing in step with the times! f mum t p W- ,--ti-Q o a -, , l X is F, l- i M, - , ah P -- - - P SN y X X 'QRS w f- 4 2993 3-: WL P N me ,y 5 , K , K ly 1 f xr i V I Y! il ' in RT i'..u-vew1L PAGE 7 S'-To 1 ,.- sb 1 ' 'Y' .Xi 3 ,. 4-' ' f -ff i. PETERSON l00KS T0 THE FUTURE Mr. Peterson says: -'The spirit of Polytechnic High School is well defined in a quotation by James Bryant Conant, a former United States Ambassador to WestGermany. when he described the pur- poses of education. He stated. 'The primary concern of American education today is . . . to cultivate in the largest number of our future citizens an appreciation both of the responsibilities and the benefits which come to them because they are Americans and free! Since 1895 Polytechnic High School has given students of San Francisco an oppor- tunity to develop skills and acquire knowledge which would contribute to their development as useful citizens. The form of student gov- ernment and activities has been developed through the years with the objective of pro- viding an opportunity for the practice of the rights and privileges which mature citizens enjoy. X1 e are proud of the graduates of Poly- technic. They have assumed their rightful place in the community and many are lead- ers in our local, state, and national govern- nicnt. We hope that the members of the classes oi January 1956 and june 1957 will carry on in this tradition. To them go our wishes for .1 rich and full life. . X 1 .AY N ' cr 'fn M.. All chances for the championship were discarded with this loss. ln the reg- ular season the Parrots compiled an impressive record: five wins, one tie, and two defeats. One of the losses was an out of the league game. The Poly Varsityalso placed four men on the various All-City teams of the city news- papers. POLY 24, ST. IGNATIUS O The Wildcats offered little opposition in the first league game of the season. The first score was set up by line- backer Duncan Benas who blocked an S.l.punt. Roger Grimes scored. IGNATIUS O The Poly Parrots started the season with a bang. Amid the banging of bands and waving of banners, the Me- chanics tangled with the Wildcats and came out on top 6-O in fifteen minutes of play. Bob Stone scored over center on a sneak. The coordinated playing of the Parrots proved to the onlookers that the team was not as weak as led to believe Stone was given the first ball of the season for his fine leadership on the field. POLY 20, LINCOLN 0 ln the second regular season game the Axtmen started off by ripping the Mustang line to bits The Lincoln squad failed to make a dozen yards rushing, Emmett Cobb scored on a run of 20 yards. ln the next quarter Cobb inter- cepted a pass, and Clarence Carr burst through the line for anotherTD. The Parrot eleven won 24-0. MARCO BENASSINI CENTER END POLY 6, LODI 13 In an out of town, non-league game, the Lodi Flames handed the Parrots their first defeat of the year. At the end of an evening of head slamming, the score read 13-6 in favor of Lodi. Poly's only score was made by end Art Rankin who grabbed a fumble in mid-air and went all the way. The Flames used a single wlng type offense and this created havoc with the T-minded AAA team. In the second half Poly showed its stuff. The team stoppedthe Flames time and time again. This was due in large part to the defensive play of Al Nlarini, Dennis Shay, Ray Zelaya, and Stan McCarthy. POLY 25, MISSION 0 The Mission Bears lost their teeth and claws to the Parrot Beaksters. It was apparent from the first few plays that Poly would shatter the Pandas. Bob Stone, from the 40 yard line, in four consecutive quarter- back sneaks, scored the first of the Parrot's touch- downs. After the first score the Bears folded like wet noodles. The game's outstanding player was guard Stan McCarthywho won the game ball for hisflawless middle-guard play and fine offensive blocking. ln addition L. C. Shields, Bill Duncan, John Thomas, and Bob Stone were cited for fine play. POLY 21, BALBOA 12 Poly trampled the Balboa Bucs, the leadingteam in the AAA, 21-12. This game put Poly in first place and gave the Parrots the Round Robin Champion- ship. OB Bob Stone started the rout by running on an option play 66 yards on the second play from scrimmage, and threw a 56 yard pass to Dennis Shay who ripped all the way to paydirt. ln the fourth quar- ter Clarence Carr ran 45 yards to another TD. Stone scored all three conversions. Bal gave grim resist- ance but failed to score when Poly's first string was in the game. Ray Zelaya won the game ball. 6 , I f , is Q X WILLIE QUINN END uint. Leading in the first half on TD's by Emmett Cobb and Charles Tanner, the Parrots had control of the game until an injury to one of the lrish's key players fired them to a vengeful pitch, and they began rolling. By the beginning of the fourth quarter they had the score tied. The Axt- men, who had been playing the second string de- fense the whole game, put in the first string and stopped Sacred Heart from winning the game. The lrish's WaltArnold ran over and through the Parrot wall. POLY 14, LOWELL 0 In the traditional Poly-Lowell game the Parrots again trounced Lowell, this year 14-0, although until the second half everyone was wondering if Lowell might upset the Poly squad. The score was 0-0 in the second half when the Parrots scored seven points. With outstanding blocking and team assistance Clarence Carr went up the middle and over tackle for both TD's making it the 13th straight year that Poly beat Lowell. L. C. Shields was given the game ball for his outstanding line play. PLAY-OFFS: POLY 0, ST. IGNATIUS 21 The Wildcats began the semi-final game with such fury and determination that they swept the Parrots off their feet and into third place in the final stand- ings. The breaks, in favor of S. l., coupled with a hard-charging line, showed the way for the Wildcats and they pushed their way into the championship game by defeating Poly 21-0. Fans saw Emmett Cobb catch a TD pass only to have it called back because of an offside penalty. All through the gamethe Cats took advantage of the weak Parrot blocking assign- ments and turned them against the Poly Varsity. The Wildcats played like the champs they proved themselves to be. In the All-City meet Lincoln proved the top team and the Parrots were not able to overcome a six point lead held by the Mustangs. Top contenders in the All-City meet were Andy Loobey, Bob Kane, Ken Marcroft, and Bernard Voight. Poly's junior Varsity Cross Country Team came through with first place in the All-City contest. In the season opener, the high Hying Parrots trounced a Z strong Lincoln team T-1 to 39, followed by Galileo Q 103 to 10 and Balboa T6 to 37. Arch rival Lowell fell before mighty Poly S5 to QS, the Saint Ignatius Wild- cats 92 to 21 and Mission lost 93 to 20. The Washing- ton meet was not held due to rain. Unbeatable Herb Blanchard and Jackie Tillman paced the Parrots throughout the season. Several records were broken and tied. Blanchard ran the 100 yard dash in 9. T and the 220 in 21. Li. Jackie Tillman high jumped 6 feet - 6 inches to establish a new record. Other outstand- ing members were double winner Jerry Bell, Ellis Jenkins, Paul Patton, Jesse Serles, Andy Loobey, Bernard Yoight, Bob Kane, Charles Smith, MelSharp, Duncan Benas, L. C. Shields, and Al Marinai. Both lightweight teams did exceptionally well. The 13O'S were undefeated in six dual meets compared to the R i i l tour wins and two losses by the 1120 lbs. squad.
