CLIFF WATERMAN ENRIQUE MELLO LOUIE HILBERT Soccer Team Captures Second Place Defeated by one team only, Polyts soccer team brought their season to a successful Close by winning second place. Led by all-city selections LOuie Hilbert and Cliff Waterman, the booters did everything but win the championship, which they lost to Galileo by a score of 1-0. The most important position of the team, that of goalie, was shared by Charles Coleman, Ron Ferguson, and Bob Thulander. Poly,s powerful fullbacks Robert McGuirk, Phil Claussen, Bill Hawkins, Bud Summers, and Bill Chap- m . Halfback positions were held by LOuis Hilbert, Sam x.ut1er, Stanley Burrows, Ben Dominguez, Robert Der- rigan, Hank Uribe and Floyd Kellman. Members of the line, were Jim Patiris, Cliff Water- man, George Obregon, Enrique Mello, Bob Zavaleta, Don Revere, Gomer Thomas, Nick Melnick, Pete Rev- illa, Leon Cathey, Pete Rossi, Robert Laws, Bob Tis- nado, and Fred Quinn. The team was beset at the beginning of the season by the loss of their talented right wing, Leon Collette, who suffered a head concussion in a practice game. Again the team suffered right before the championship game, when their powerful center forward, Don Rev- ere, contracted a broken ankle, and could not play in the nnal game. If it were not for these setbacks, the spirited team might have made the one point which separated them from the championship. Cross-Country Takes First Place SECOND CONSECUTIVE CROSS-COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP FOR POLY PolyTs hard-working endurance men wound up the cross-country season very nicely, sharing champion- ship with Washington. Before the All-City meet, Polyfs runners were victorious in all their practice meets with other high schools. These Victories were FAIRBANKS over Balboa, Tamalpais, Palo Alto, Commerce, and Saint Ignatius. The five members of the team were Warren Fair- banks, Bill Rodarte, Dan Radke, Frank Wright, and Milton Howard. In the championship meet, the best high school runners in San Francisco fought it out for supremacy. RODARTE . The meet was held on a marked course in Golden Gate Park, ending with a lap around the three-quarter mile track in the old stadium. It turned out to be a Poly harrier who conquered the pack of eighty-seven runners. In a tremendous finish drive, Poly,s Warren Fair- banks thundered past WashingtonTs Gordon Lee to HOWARD become the first runner in San Franciscds cross- country history to win the gruelling mile and one- half run for the Parrots. Bill Rodarte of Poly turned in a powerful eighth place, and Dan Radke, Frank Wright, and Milton Howard sprinted it out, with Radke taking eleventh, Wright twelfth, and Howard fourteenth. WRIGHT The team was also backed up by such outstanding runners as Bob Derrigan, Bob Knuth, Walter Knut- son, Fred Quinn, and Stan Burrows. Next year's team should be equally as great, with veterans Fairbanks, Wright, and Howard returning and with the same expert guidance to the newcomers from Coach Edgar Williams that fostered this years team to championship.
