Classes ....... the Organizations .... the Sports ........ Aspiring to Heights Much ot our time is spent on stairs where we pause before school or rush between classes. In stoic silence the stairs listen to our secrets, quarrels, and iokes - and they declare with granite certainity that we may aspire to great- er heights. This volume of school history has been fashion- ecl in the pattern of stairs because of their prominence in our memories and aspirations. vibe' SLQWTN ff 'gawvwfi' 'DQ Xe I '4.v,,aI The Coach and Captain Ronald Ballard enjoy the pastry of victory. His ability to instill the fighting spirit into his players resulted in twelve titles - eight district, three bi-district, and one state He is shown here with '59 Co-captains Johnny Fowler and Don Rosick. 4 Since this record of memories is the possession of every student who has walked through these halls, the dedication belongs ap- propriately to a person who em- bodies the collective spirit ot the orange and black. In appreciation tor his courage, friendship, and loyalty, the 1960 edition ofthe Parrot is dedicated to Coach Jack Harley. Typical of his friendly spirit, the Coach chats with Paschal Coach There was no trace of his cantaglaus laughter when he enforced Charlie Turner prior to 1950 season. trammg rules or plotted game strategy - f ,V . Wiafza Principal C. A. Thompson His voice is confident whether stern in reprimand, perceptive in consolation, or buoyant in en- couragement. With keen eyes, he searches out the indigent and the distressed, and with strong arms he guides them to stability. Humble in victory, invincible in defeat, and fearless in turmoil, Mr. T is father to his students, friend to his staff, and the spirit of Poly High to everyone who knows him. Superintendent J. P. Moore sits between his assistants David Sellars and W. A. Meacham. Mr. Meacham, who will retire this spring after 43 years with the Fort Worth Public School System, and Mr. Moore are former principals at Poly. Jack Colclasure keeps his troops marching, his rifles firing, and his boys smiling. After closing the armory, he coaches the golf team. Sgt. Robert Ohr helps enforce military reg- ulations in the school army. Along with Sgt. Colclasure he teaches the boys obedi- ence, loiyalty, and endurance. In directing the publications of both the Parrot and Para- keet and keeping an English class in keel, Mrs. Dorothy Estes has more than once put in a i2-hour day. Although relinquishing various holidays, she remains patient and understanding at all times. People often wonder how Mrs. Patricia Ed- wards can be so ebullient about verbs and coniunctions. As head of the department, she sets other English teachers an example for creative proiects. English Department Mrs. Dorothy Pratt's high standards have been responsible for the education of more than one good student and her patience, for the salvation of more than one weak l one. An efficiency expert in the classroom, Miss Emma Mur- phy has received national publicity for her unique Christ- mas decorations of dried okra and empty cans. Lord Byron could never find a more devoted fan than Mrs. Marie Graves, English and guidance teacher. The auburn-haired instructor wins many friends by her understanding of human nature and sense of humor. The smallest member of the English department, Mrs. Colleen Bethell, left a big vacancy when she resigned at mid-term to move with her husband to Greenwood, Miss., where he is music director for the First Baptist Church. Double negatives and lazy students have a wretched time in Mrs. Maybelle Crouch's English classes. Though she assigns drills by the dozen, each student appreciates her guidance. nglis Four children and twenty miles do not disturb Mrs. Margaret Wood. She arrives at school early, cheerful and prepared after rushing her own children to school and driving from Arlington. Probably the quietest member of the department, Miss Louise Langley is considered an excellent gram marian and an able teacher. A wicked saxophone player and a kind librar- ian, Miss Beverly Dotson kept books in students' hands until she was transferred to Meadowbrook Junior High at mid-term. Co-sponsor of the Future Techers, Mrs. Julie Landry uses both intimidation and inspiration in her composition exercises for English. The Reverend D. E. Mines teaches ci scholarly Bible course in the converted shack. As choral ond orchestra director, B. G. Ackert is o responsible for much of the music that goes around l Po y. ' Mrs. Resa Oglesby inspires prize-winning collections of paintings, sculptures, and tapestry. After hours, she takes her students to local exhibits and museums. ln addition to o full schedule, Mrs. Julia Welch plons speeches, dinners, ond films for Pon-American Forum members. Whether directing a play or a graduation plan, Mrs. Almena Johnson remains aloof from confu- sion and pessimism. Band Director G. P. Fcieller began his public school career with top awards in marching and concert playing. Charles Connally, who alternates between history and As Latin as Romulus, Mrs. Bessie Ellis' lessons have been speech classes, serves as Junior Red Cross sponor, lead- enriched with photographs and lectures from her trip ing the group in its membership drive and Christmas abroad last summer. proiect. lf Baseball Coach Harry Mul- lins seems to have a split per- sonality, maybe it's because he doubles in football and baseball as well as in history and biology. The fact that the lieuten- ant-colonel wears petticoats doesn't interfere with the ROTC sponsors. Mrs. Anabel Atkinson is serving her second year as sponsor for the Poly army and her third ye-ar as English and history teacher. lf Poly students escape lung cancer, they may have to give credit to Donald Norton, who is equally proficient as Safety Council sponsor, magazine drive chairman, or guardian of the boys' restrooms. At home on ocean liners or wa ter skis, Mrs. Dorothy Green re- laxes after her history lectures by manufacturing and selling aqua-kribs, an invention she de- signed to bathe her young grandson. A hard man to defeat at chess or football, Keith Averitte is champion track coach, study hall keeper, and history teacher. Qepartment Ralph James presides over a student-made museum com- posed of miniature planta- tions, battlefields, ancl capi- tols. His classes frequently discuss historical events in panels and groups. Room 2l'l might be called an arsenal of history. Not content with teaching facts, this head of department insists that stu- dents learn causes and ef- fects. Miss Hope Stallings also sponsors the National Honor Society. A grey Hamburg set at a iaunty angle and a cocky bow-tie exemplify the non conformist spirit of history teacher Joe Clark. Besides be ing well-versed in all aspects of history, Mr. Clark is also an accomplished writer. The school's most popular chaperone, W. B. Cole prob- ably holds the record for at- tending ball games, dances, and JCL meetings. In addition to his trips and extra-curricu- lar activities, his history notes and tests are frequent sub- iects of discussion with stu- dents. The annual watermelon and swimming party at John Hill's home each spring cli- maxes a year of debates and arguments about history and current events. Civics classes learn legal terms and court- room procedure from a mock trial that begins with a crime and ends with a verdict. Stern, dramatic explanations of geom- etry and algebra linger in students' mefnorles QS C remlqder of Mrs' Belly Counselor, mathematician, and Allied Smnh' who lell ol m'd'le m' Youth sponsor, Robert Sherrod moves from task to task with a positive effec- tiveness. Whether he is in bell-bottomed trousers or blue serge ones, H. W. Patterson sets a fast pace for math students or athletes with his temperate habits and rigid training. Mat If given a choice, Mrs. Alta Ruth Davis would hold classes in a fishing boat off the shores of Lake Whitney. Although he was transferred to William James at mid-term, Bart Haltom left a big dent in the mathematics department and on the fairway. CP2l1't1'I1C1'1lI When Mrs. Ellen Plastino goes around in circles, they are always geometrically accurate. Meticulous by nature, Mrs. Plastino has few qualms about assign- ing home worlc and daily tests. If one of Miss Maurine MarteI's students goes to the moon, he will either be prov- ing the theories or escaping the assign- ments of this head of the mathematics department. Adair astounds students with his precise approach to mathematics. A little droopy-eyed from sleep- less nights, Mac Watson is still the proudest papa in Poly. Applying physics problems to baby formulas, he conducts his would-be scientists in experiments and explorations. Good boy, though . . . is the solemn refrain heard frequently from Profes- sor K. W. Dunkelberg, illustrating his dry humor. Bewildered students soon learn to expect anything under the direction of this chemistry tutor. Cutting up frogs, adding up registers, or working on committees, Mrs. Mar- tha Rawdon is fearless and compe- tent. She is now teaching the chil- dren of her first students and is just as determined that all Poly students will learn the basic principles of bio- logy. Science Department Weekly meetings of Leti preceded by cabinet planning keep Miss Katherine Rose rushing but en- thralled. Under her guidance, the club earns its own money and gives it to deserving people. From eight until four she can be found dissect- ing grasshoppers and cats. Providing for his growing menag- erie and collection of plants seems to be the favorite pastime of gui- tar-picking, biology teacher J. W. lade. He is often seen smuggling food from the cafeteria for his lit- tle pets. Neither the heat of welding torches nor the cold of parking lots distract Clyde Butler as a craftsman in me- tal shop or a leader of boys. Quick to mend broken furniture and slow to lose his temper, R. L. Boyd instructs boys in the use of shop equipment as they construct chairs, beds, and tables which the mothers enjoy while the boys are wife shopping. M 5 KE I ...A , i a m iv. ,te .. Under Mrs. Mara Evans' direction, in- experienced girls complete wardrobes and learn home management. The girls explore every facet of home- making from floral arrangement to furniture selection. if' .5 'wtil Much of the confusion caused by floating teachers was solved by signs lettered in O. D. Adair's me- chanical drawing classes. His spe- cial interests are the cattle he has raised and the new course he has pioneered in descriptive geometry. No matter how many thumbs her students seem to have when they enroll in typing, Mrs. Joyce Cal- houn usually finds a key to fit every thumb. She has been called a model of charming efficiency as a mother and as a teacher. As head of the business department, Mrs. Tommie Phipps sets a fast pace for students and other teachers. Typing, commercial law, and bookkeeping stu- dents have learned to walk in the door with books open and minds alert. Students may slink into Miss Edith Hud- son's distributive education classes, but they walk out with shoulders straight and pants pressed. She drills them with sales techniques each morning at school and inspects them for sales results each afternoon on the iob. Commercial Department When competing in the fierce busi- ness world after graduation, com- mercial students appreciate the skilled direction they have received under Mrs. Clara Dillard, typing and shorthand teacher. This petite brownette concentrates on the es- sentials of keeping a iob for later years. As a talented organist and an ac- curate typist, Mrs. Florence Hud- clleston proves the value of dex- terous and agile fingers. This smiling artist guides nimble and clumsy hands to accomplish smooth and speedy typing. No title has been devised to in- clude the multiple duties of Mrs. Evelye Reeves. As sponsor of the cheerleaders, she directs all pep rallies. As teacher of rhythm, she plans all choreography. As friend, she keeps Poly at its best. Limited equipment and facilities have no effect on this veteran teacher, Miss Cecil Owens, who keeps the balls bouncing in her classes. After hours she keeps a watch over her pet dogs. Girls are kept trim and agile with exercises and dances in Miss Lucy Richardson's classes. Completing her first year as a school marm, Miss Richardson coaches the tennis class and tennis club. Physical Education Diagramming English sentences or football plays, Coach .lack Whitley wields a firm hand. His poise in conflict and his courage in defeat command the respect of both stu- dents and teachers. Department Going to Bi-District the first year he was in Poly, Coach Weldon Moody proved himself an able leader and teacher. Remaining calm and considerate at all times, he has gained the favor of his fellow workers and of all students. During his first year at this school, Coach Charles Sealy revolutionized boys' PE. Stressing uniforms and participation, he instigated an in- tramural program in football, bas- ketball, and baseball. of Eleven Years, Study - Seniorship Davld ROTC, Drill Team, Officers Club, Art Club. nderson, Karen Pan-Am Club, Leti Cabinet, Bowling Club. ntwiler, larry JCL, Bowling Club. ustin, Esta FTA, JRC, Lexi. xline, David Band, Traffic Safety Club. xline, Johnny acon, Eddie ROTC, Officers' Club, Color Guard Commander, Battle Group, Bio-Chem- Phy, Officer, JCL, Bowling Club, JA, ALL-City Chorus, Youth Service Coun- cil. Stage Band J L Two seven-piece groups operate with- in the larger stage band - a dixieland combo and a modern combo. Togeth- er with acts originated by ingenious band members, these groups frequent- ly provide entertainment for service club meetings and dances. I Band Director George Foeller examines a copy of First Chair of America, official publication of the national honorary music organization. Mr. Foeller directs the stage and marching bands as well as the beginning and advanced concert groups. The stage band consisting of 17 musicians and one girl vocalist needs a full-time booking agent. Activities for this year include such events as the Miss Texas, Miss Fort Worth Pageants, the Miss Flame contest, the state convention of the Texas Junior Chamber of Commerce as well as numerous dances and shows. - V . ,....i .m, zsm s . f 5 Chorus Linda Jones, Carol long, and Mary Ann Wallace check the call board for All-City Chorus details. H Ple of Speed - Joe Bell, Jimmy Hunter, Joe GI Bll d Al B II Il i y Telfor , vis u ew, Wi iam Sumpter. The Parrots Brimming with jarring tackles and bruising blocks, the 1959 Poly grid produced all the usual characteristics expected of a high school football team. Some how the Parrots just never came out on the long end of the score. An uphill climb all the way, the pre-conference duration was especially rocky. It took Poly until the Weatherford game to get used to the feel of gridiron turf under their cleats. An offi- cial's flag kept the Parrots from .Iohnie Bentley, 30, cracks through Mont- efenders while Bob Miller, right, and Jimmy below, come lo his and. Above: Johnie Bentley, 30, Bob Miller, 88, Jim Wilson, 71, provide interference in the Weatherford game for Jimmy Hunter's break-away touchdown run which was nullified by a penalty. tying or possibly winning the game when a breakaway twenty-two yard touchdown dash was called back. Comfortably cushioned on their laurels, the '58 district champs, the Carter Riverside Eagles, took advantage of the Parrots' injury riddled ranks and bowled them over on their way to their sec- ond consecutive crown. After opening against the strong Eagles, Poly settled itself for rough sailing. Right: Mountain of Meanness - Jimmy Humphrey, Don Heizer, Gailand Prlddy Norman Maize, .lohnie Bentley. Ab Don Heizer, 44, gets ready to waylay a charging Northsider. The bright spot on the Orange- men's '59 grid record was the Arlington Height's tilt. The Jac- kets who were slated to take the championship, couldn't push over a touchdown against the fired-up Parrots' defense. In the fourth quarter Poly scored the winning touchdown, but a pen- alty brought it back. The game which ended in a scoreless tie was heralded the best effort of the Parrots' season. rging with Fire and Fury are: Bob Beams, larry Thompson, David Buckman, W illiam Parish, Ronny Beams, Allen Rhome, Ends.
