Moore, right, who heads Fort VVorth's vast school system, is superintendent. VV. A. Nleacham, assistant superintendent in charge of high schools, has held the post since 1931. 340065 OAJQPUQ .gafe Gnfennia The week of Nlarch 1 through 6 was designated by Governor Allan Shivers for patrons to pay an annual visit to schools. This week was in observance of the 100th Anni- versary of Public lfree liducation in the State of Texas. The centennial theme was evident in all activities of the week. This year also marks the centennial of the first school of any kind in Fort XVorth, al- though the system, as it is known today, was DOI put into operation until 1882. john Peter Smith set up the Hrst school in an abandoned Army building in 185-1. soon after troops left here and while the civilian population still was very meager. Many years have passed since that memor- able day in 185-1. VVC believe Alexander Hogg, Fort VVorth's first school superintendent. would be awed at the present system. Fort XVorth taxpayers are spending more than a million dollars this year to operate and maintain a multi-million dollar school plant. Seven
