special awards YUKI OKUBO HOLLEY WOOLF ANNALEE RUTTER FAITH ZINK NANCY WALLACE HINRICH SIEVEKING BILL PARSON RALPH RIDGEWAY In order to give more recognition to those students who make outstanding contributions in the various fields of endeavor a new Awards section has been added to this year's Caerulea. These students have demonstrated unusual ability in scholastic competi- tion and have been recognized by various clubs and institutions for their achievements. The honors and awards which are presented at graduation ceremonies cannot be included in this listing as the yearbook went to press before these facts were available. How- ever, the heartiest congratulations are offered to all the Poly graduates who have brought honor to themselves, and their school, by demonstrating thata certain enthusiasm for learning and knowledge which will surely bring them future success and happiness. The Homemakers of Tommorow Award is awarded on the basis of achievement on a 300 question test given at l2,26O schools throughout the nation. The school winners compete in state-wide contests and are then eligible for scholarships given by General Mills. IRENE BAKER received the Homemaker of Tommorow award from Poly. Each year the Exchange Club authorizes the faculty and counselors at Poly to choose the most outstanding senior girl and boy, This year's recipients were JAN DASH and JAN VAN DE WATER. The city-wide high school winners attend a banquet where they are given their awards. These ten winners from Long Beach write an essay fthis year's theme was The Real Meaning of Democracy to Me J which is entered in a state-wide contest. The first prize in the state, based on grades, altivities, and the essay, is a five hundred dollar scholarship. The Elk's Club Award is awarded annually to a graduating senior from each Long Beach high school. Poly's recipient was TERRY DAVIS. Selection is made by a scholarship committee within the Schaatsiaafarats nacftatfttacaiwataatssfftaaa 'aa'tH6'5asr5'ara?a'a5 k'n z and worthiness. Ill NANCY KUBO'S speech A Monument to Man won her first place in the Downtown Lions Club speech contest. With this same speech on the history of California's Public Schools she carried off the first place award in the Native Sons of California contest. Nancy has also been the winner of the sophomore, junior, and senior speaking contests at Poly. The Womens Music Club of Long Beach holds auditions for the young musicians of the city. The first place winners of the three divisions, strings, piano, and voice, perform for the membership of the Ebell Theater. LINDA McHENRY won first place in the vocal auditions by singing an operatic aria and one other musical selection. Representing Poly, HINDA OZAN won first place in the all-city My True Security speech contest sponsored by the Long Beach Junior Chamber of Commerce. She received her award at a dinner which the Junior Chamber of Commerce presented during their first annual city-wide contest. The Long Beach Optometric Association sponsored the Safer Driving Through Better Vision contest.
